December The Wright Brothers started the Wright Cycle Company to The brothers studied bird flight and the works of other engineers and began experiments of flight. July The brothers developed wing warping, a method of controlling a flying machine. October Orville and Wilbur began glider experiments at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. October The Wright brothers built a wind tunnel. September 8, The brothers assembled a new glider and made flights as long as 600 feet. March 23, The Wright Brothers applied for a patent on a flying machine. September 25, The Wright Brothers returned to Kitty Hawk. December 17, The brothers made the first sustained, controlled and free flight by a power-driven machine. They made four flights, the first lasting 12 seconds for 120 feet, the last 59 seconds for 852 feet.

The third is vertical. drag - the force that pushes against an airplane that is moving through the air. This force slows the speed of the plane. patent - an official document giving a person the right or privilege to perform an act or a duty. rudder - a moveable airfoil on an airplane attached at the rear end. The rudder controls the forward movement of flight. technique - a method or style in which something is done. wind tunnel - a tunnel-like passage where an object can be placed and air is forced through at a known speed. Wind tunnels are used to study how air flows around an object.
