1 North West Traders Association Newsletter Volume 2,Issue 2 2nd Quarter 2002 From The President Well another spring is about to fade into summer and that means for this year at least NOAC. A great new batch of NOAC issues has hit the market and I have had a fun time chasing all of them down. Also not to be outdone a few CSP/SAP issues have popped up to make the CSP world more interesting to boot. I want to extend a warm welcome to Bill Cromley our CSP editor. Boy this spring was busy. I counted 6 events that had some degree of patch trading associated with them. I made five of them. If you did not get a chance to get to any of the six I will mention, put them on your calendar for next year. Kevin did a great job with the Western Washington TOR. This is a must for the northwest collector to attend. Wauna La-Mon'tay 442 did a fine job with their Rendezvous with patch trading becoming Jeff Ansley more accepted. The Willamette Valley TOR is becoming a great TOR in its own right. I personally cannot afford to ever miss that one in the future. This year was my first time and the trading was great. I did not have a chance to get to the W1C conclave but I will next year. The Central Washington TOR is going through growing pains but in time it will be a great TOR, Ed you did great putting this together from scratch. Not to be left out the W1B conclave was great. The shows and the patch trading and auction were splendid. Have a great summer and let us not forget that we live in a great nation and many have paid the price for the liberties we now enjoy. As we approach Independence Day and as our military fight s to insure freedom and safety for all lets remember them. God bless.jeff Inside this issue: O/A News from W. Please take some time, jot down when you get that new patch issue from your lodge or council, and send a quick to the wonderful folks that write the articles you find here. Let us know and we will all become a better informed group of collectors!! Todd Hatfield In this issue we are lucky to have one of the Giants of the Northwest in Scouting Collectibles providing a two part article on the top OA in our area. Thanks Frank!! I m also looking for a youth to add their ideas, if you know of any young collector who would like to contribute, please let me know. Thanks for all your help!! Enjoy!! Todd.<[:)]-

2 Page 2 Western Washington Lots going on in Western Washington! We wrapped up two successful spring events including the 5th Anniversary Western Washington Trade-O-Ree held March 2 in Olympia and the April Section W1-B 50th Anniversary Conclave at Illahee Junior High School in Federal Way. The Trade-O-Ree had over 125 attendees from Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The event emphasizes patch displays and the attendees were not disappointed as some of the best displays in the hobby were presented. A few "highlights" were Brian Ankenman's entire OA collection; John Bradley's merit badge sash & uniform display; Russ Ragsdale's Region 11 patch & documentation presentation and my own National Chief, Tsisqan & 11-B dome collection. Section W1-B put on a great Conclave and once again outdid themselves with the amount of conclave patches issued including ones designed by Gavin MacHutchin for the trading post, participant, staff, backpatch, donator & participation in training. Gavin creates all the designs for Nisqually Lodge and Pacific Harbors council and does an excellent job. His work is also starting to appear in patches put out by Nanuk and Toontuk Lodges. The conclave museum had lots of interesting displays including a near complete Section W1-B collection, mugs & rare 11-B ceramic neckerchief slides from the early 1960s. National Committee member, Del Loder, donated a set of four of these rare ceramic slides for the auction. They were the top item in the auction bringing in $650. The total take for the auction was $5350, 2nd highest ever for the Section. One of the top selling youth auction items was the Lo La Qam Geela Lodge # NORTH WEST TRADERS Kevin Rudesill NOAC black ghost contingent flap ($53). There were also Kootz Lodge #523 Conclave/NOAC 2000 regular and ghost sets on the youth and all arrowmen auctions that went for a lot as well as a Nanuk Lodge # Conclave Service Lodge fringed flap ($210). Alan Anderson, Frances Ansley, David Stock, Tina Stock & Wally Stier did a "top-notch" job assisting me with the Section Auction. The Conclave Trading post is always popular. There were plenty of lodge patches for sale here at steep discounts. T Kope Kwis Kwis' once "super rare" Slappy Service Backpatch went for a mere $1 on Friday evening until someone said "are you crazy," and then it was raised to $10. They also were selling really old S12 s for just $3. Wa-La-Moot -Kin Lodge was selling their "Home of the Western Region Chief" Gold Mylar flaps for just $5. These were recently appearing on Section and Internet Auctions for $35-$45. Nisqually Lodge gets the "roasted raven" award for what they did with their 2002 Service Lodge Flaps. These first appeared at the 2001 Conclave and were only available 2/member, 200 made. Just before Conclave 2002, the lodge decided that the embroidery on the first run didn t meet their expectations and they wanted to change "Service Lodge" to "Service Council." A request for the new patches was sent to Krelman. When they received the new patches (another batch of 200), they were exactly the same as the first run. Instead of giving the flaps to the Service Lodge staff as promised, they put them in the Conclave Trading Post causing a once "rare" patch to become a standard issue. Until next time.kevin Trends Kevin Rudesill Trends -- Of course OA. Items that are $25-$45 are always highly sought after. And then there are a few surprises... When a Nanuk S7 Vigil flap showed up last month on ebay, it shot up from $200 to $800 in the final few seconds. A collector from Alaska snapped it up. A pair of Quilshan 50th Anniversary Flaps and W1-W5 Chenille's just sold for $1000. Then there are the classic, high end items... A beautiful Cole Snass Lamatai neckerchief sold for $332 last month and a crisp T'Kope Kwis Kwis F1 & P1 sold for $1700 in a early June set-priced sale. National and World Jamboree items are especially "hot" right now as several former collectors just began to show interest in them again. Items on recent auctions include a 1969 Evergreen JSP round, 1971 WJ Midnight Sun Round, 1985 Modoc Council Arrowhead, 1985 W. Alaska Shield, 1989 SE Alaska Council JSP, 1989 W. Alaska Council JSP, 1993 Modoc JSP, 1997 Chief Seattle & W. Alaska Pins. Some of the toughest pieces include the 1954 Lewis Clark Shield; 1989 Modoc JSP, 1993 W. Alaska JSP, 1995 Pacific Harbors WJSP. Some of these are pictured below. Another hot trend is Alaska and Oregon Conclave patches and Region 11 CPs. Weak Areas include camp patches, Eastern and Western Washington & Idaho Conclave patches. Many are going for just a few bucks! 3 V OLUME 2,I SSUE 2 Page 3 Top Ten Classic Flaps From The Pacific Northwest Frank Kern PART ONE Greetings and salutations. This article identifies the top ten scarcest flaps from the Pacific Northwest consisting of lodges from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. My final selections were based on my personal observations after chasing cloth for 25 years, so the list is subjective and open for argument. My criteria for selection is direct - quantity of patches in the hands of collectors. Note that I do not use price for my assessment. The purpose of this article is to rank rarity, not price. Because of this, I chose to draw a line; I do not consider any flap made after My reasons are simple and shared by many collectors; after this date there were several patches made in limited quantity for the purpose of trading. The classic items made prior to 1980 were made for wear, not for collectors. These are the items that true patch-hounds respect. Here's the list using Blue Book catalog numbers. I look forward to your feedback. #3 Koo Ben Sho 311 F1 Idaho Panhandle Council Coeur d'alene, Idaho Without question, this is the most expensive item from the Northwest. It was made in the early 1960's. The First Flap Book rates this as a '10', one of the 21 rarest first-flaps in the country. In truth, it is in the top 5. Collectors also consider this to be a top ten OA name, making it a key item for national collectors. Koo Ben Sho is an acronym based on the council counties. When the council map changed, so did the lodge name. Rumor states members threw this flap into a fire as a ceremonial end of the lodge. Is it true? I don't know, but I wish I never let mine go! I am aware of 12 examples in collections. I have never seen one in mint condition. #1 Quilshan 325 S3 Mount Baker Area Council Bellingham, Washington This is known as the Quilshan White Boarder and was made in Upon arrival, the lodge noted that the flap was not made as ordered; the edge was intended to be silver mylar, not white, and the lodge took offense to the 'decapitated' goat. An unknown quantity of patches were kept and given to lodge officers, then the rest were sent back to the manufacture and corrected. The white r/e was stripped and replaced with a smy r/e, the goat decapitation was cured, and a black line was added around the goat. These corrected flaps are listed in the Blue Book as S4; several still have white 'guide' tape for rework instructions. I am aware of 5 S3's in collections, all are located in Washington State. # 2 Moskwa 301 F4 Fort Simcoe Council Yakima, Washington The 'infamous' Pig Flap. This patch is down-right ugly. The lodge was unhappy with the bear because it, well, it looks like a pig - thus the nickname. A former member of the lodge gave me the low down. The flaps were taken to the 1969 National Jamboree at Farragut State Park and 50 were distributed to lodge members. After complaints about the design and refusal to wear on uniforms, they were dumped in the kybo. Urban Legend? Perhaps but they are damn tough to get. I am aware of 7 in collections. # 4 Tillicum 392 S1 Tumwater Council Olympia, Washington This mid 1950's flap is interesting because it was one of the first rolled-edge solid flaps. It features a double-headed thunderbird design that is different from later Tillicum issues. The First Flap Book rates this a '10', making it one of the best flaps in the country. I am only aware of 13 in collections, most are worn. # 5 Makualla 437 F1 Modoc Council Klammath Falls, Oregon Makualla c/e flaps are killer and getting two in one place is almost unheard of. For this reason, only one c/e flap was known prior to It took NW patch guru, Dana Bonstrom, to point out the second issue. Most c/e 437's turned out to be the 2nd issue making the F1 highly coveted. This First Flap Book rates this a '10', making it one of the best in the country. I am aware of 15 examples of this classic, mid-1950's flap. 4 NORTH WEST TRADERS Page 4 The CSP Corner This is not the most exciting time for CSP collectors. Most of the big news is about all the flap sets being issued for this year's NOAC. There are, however, a few interesting things to report. First, there's a follow-up on the Cascade Pacific Eagle Scout Assn. CSP. It does exist. The CSP is a bit unusual in that it is a half moon shape with a silver mylar border. The patch is available to Eagle Scouts who join the Eagle Scout Association and to others who swear on the life of their first born that they won't wear it if they're not Eagle Scouts. Second is an interesting story about the 2001 FOS CSP issued by Crater Lake Council. I purchased one through ebay some time ago and attempted to verify it as a legitimate issue at the W1-C and W1-B Conclaves without much success. It has a red border and looks exactly like their regular issue except for the 2001 Friends of Scouting printed on two lines across the middle of the patch. The fun part of the story is that when the patches arrived at the council office they were rejected and sent back to the manufacturer. Seems the council wanted a gold bordered patch to distinguish it from their regular issue. Eventually, 250 of the gold bordered patches made it to the council and were given to those who donated to their FOS campaign. So how did I get a red bordered patch off ebay? It was listed by none other than the Northwest King of Changs in Sumner Washington. Enough said. The red bordered CSP should rightly be considered a fake that was sold illegally outside the council and without their knowledge. By the way, they have also issued a 2002 CSP with the exact same design. Bill Cromley Finally, here is a summary of other CSP's that have been issued throughout the Northwest that were not included in my last report. I have included a scan of the Meriwether 75th Ann. Staff CSP. Mint issues are going to be tough to acquire. Many of the patches ended up on uniforms almost immediately. Blue Mtn. Council has issued the second in its FOS series. They each contain a point of the Scout Law and leave a lot to be desired on design grounds. I know the main purpose of these patches is to reward those who donate to the council, but a poorly designed patch is not much of a reward for a $125 donation. Grand Columbia issued a black and white FOS patch which will probably be listed as SA-7. Inland Northwest has ordered a red bordered FOS CSP which will sell in the council office for $ I'll try to include a scan in my next report. Mt. Baker has issued a slightly oversized 2002 FOS CSP. It has "trustworthy" across the bottom, so I assume we'll be treated to eleven more patches in this series. One of these can be in your collection for a mere $100 donation. Rounding out the issues in this report is the latest variety of the Ore-Ida CSP. It has National's fancy new backing and several minor color changes and other alterations similar to what happened to the Blue Mtn. CSP when they went from the partial cut edge to the full cut edge issue. That's it for this report. I hope those of you with information about other issues in the Northwest, not covered here, will be willing to share that information so that it can be included in our next newsletter. 5 V OLUME 2,I SSUE 2 Page 5 Alaska Alan Sorum I don't think 523 will have any issues out for the NOAC. There is a 2 piece set from 549 for this NOAC. My lodge (355) is supposed have a set for NOAC, but has not released anything yet. Alan Oregon The three western Oregon Lodges are all busy preparing for NOAC. Tsisqan Lodge is planning on producing two flaps for NOAC. Any contingent member may purchase as many as 40 Trader flaps and as many as 5 Delegate flaps. Wauna La - Mon'tay has a two piece set that is selling for $12.50 apiece from the council office. Contingent members have a discounted price for trading stock but have been instructed not to sell their patches and undercut the Lodge. Lo La `Qam Geela Lodge has not announced their plans but they typically issue a single NOAC flap. The annual regular issue flap for Wauna La-Mon'tay has been released and is for sale in the council office for $4.00 apiece. Paul Collett The artwork was designed by Gavin MacHutchin of Nisqually Lodge. An unusual variety of the Lo La `Qam Geela 1997 ceremony patch has surfaced recently. The patch says "Ceremony Team Lo La `Qam Geela" rather than "Lo La `Qam Geela Ceremony Team". If anyone knows the story behind this, please fill us in. We are planning a Trade-O-Ree in the Portland area October 5th but the location has not been nailed down. Keep your calendar open on that date and watch for an update in the next NWTA Newsletter.
