This article has been revised in places to better suit the reading level. 3-D printer big draw for design class at Highland Park Senior High By Doug Belden, Pioneer Press, November 29, Students at a St. Paul high school have had the chance the past couple of weeks to design in 3-D on computers and to see their creations turned into objects they can hold in their hands. Students in the Intro to Engineering Design course at Highland Park Senior High will have the use of a 3-D printer, on loan from a local company until Tuesday. Unlike a printer that spits out paper, a 3-D printer is a machine that builds objects by adding thin layers of material in this case, plastic on top of one another. 2 Senior Jason Crabtree said it took about eight hours for the printer to make his product, a block in the shape of the state of Minnesota that looked like it could be a paperweight sold in airport gift shops. "I was a little bummed that the cities didn't come out," Crabtree said, referring to St. Paul, Minneapolis and the state's other large cities visible on his computer design but unreadable on the actual product. 3 That's part of the goal of bringing in the 3-D printer, said teacher Brad Moening to let students see the flaws in their designs by examining the finished product itself. "I didn't leave any wiggle room," said a student, who got his cannon out of the printer and realized some of the parts and the wheels were too tight. "It's too snug," he said. Another student had designed a sphere inside a sphere inside a sphere. It was supposed to come out whiffle-ball sized, but for some reason it's a weird size, she said. "We're trying to figure out why." 4 This really is hands-on geometry. The goal is to get one of the machines which sell for $15,000 to $20,000 into the classroom permanently. 3-D printers started as a way to build prototypes but are being used more and more to make end-use parts and even consumer goods. It's what industry's doing. Industrial arts is changing in the world," the teacher said. "It's all computer-driven; it's technology-driven. The future is pretty openended right now," Moening said. 5 Highland Park is in its first year of implementing a program called Project Lead the Way, which provides curriculum to encourage students to learn about and consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The arrival of the 3-D printer has given that program a jolt, Moening said. "I've had streams of kids coming in to look at it, he said, including some lining up 45 minutes before school starts in the morning. He said he overheard one student say, "If I had one of these, I'd throw away the X-box." 1

4 Read the following article about an old vase found when cleaning a house. Then answer questions Questions will ask you about information in the article. This article has been revised in places to better suit the reading level. Famil Published in the Pioneer Press on November 12, LONDON A Chinese vase that sat, little-noticed, in a suburban London home has become one of the most expensive artworks ever sold, evidence that China's sizzling art market shows no signs of cooling down. The 18th-century porcelain vase was sold by a more than 40 times the pre-sale estimate and a record for a Chinese work of art. Thursday's result was an extremely pleasant shock. "How do you anticipate the Chinese market?" Mr. Bainbridge said today. "It's totally on fire." 2 Mr. Bainbridge, the auctioneer, said the outcome was "a fairy tale" for the family who owned the vase. He said the sellers, who wish to remain anonymous, are the sister and nephew of a woman clearing out her "very modest home" in the London. The vase had been in the family at least since the 1930s, though they don't know how it was acquired. Many Chinese artifacts surfaced in Britain in the 19th century after being looted from Beijing's Summer Palace when it was sacked by British and French troops at the end of the Second Opium War in The vase was spotted as special by the auction house's specialist valuer and given an estimate of up to 1.2 million pounds. 3 On Thursday Bainbridge's suburban sale room was "full to bursting," and there was excitement in the air. "There was a silence that wrapped itself around the sale as the figure grew slowly but surely up to the sky," Bainbridge said. "I'm an auctioneer, so at that point I'm just doing the professional job I'm paid to do. Once the hammer's down you do take stock slightly and think, 'Oh, wow, that's really rather a lot of money.'" The vase was bought by a Chinese bidder on behalf of an undisclosed buyer. It is the most expensive Chinese artwork ever sold, beating a Song Dynasty scroll that sold for almost $64 million in Beijing in June. Experts say it is an exceptional piece, made for the personal enjoyment of Qing dynasty Emperor Qianlong, at a time when Chinese porcelain-making had reached a zenith. The 16-inch vase in imperial yellow features a delicate double-walled construction and is adorned with medallions depicting leaping goldfish. The price makes this work by anonymous artisans the 11th most expensive artwork ever sold at auction. It's right up there alongside the Picasso s, which is unheardof for a piece of porcelain. More record prices are sure to follow. Prices for Chinese art and antiquities are buoyant. 4 China's booming economy means new collectors are joining the market all the time, and wealthy buyers are keen to bring back treasures from their heritage. Things are going east these days. That's where the future is, and that's where the big collectors are going to be over the next 20 years. 4
