Information about the Young Masters Tournament can be found here: National Junior Tournament Canberra (ACT) The last week of the school holidays (17-25 th January) the Junior Nationals are being hosted in Canberra (ACT). This is a great tournament for our young talented players to get out there and play against the best Juniors of Australia. There are tournaments available for all age categories. Please chat to us if you are thinking about going. 3 The Interschool Chess Competition Congratulations to all schools! It was a very exciting final. Please find the final list below. We would like to thank Deputy Mayor Jill Whittaker for her continued support of the Campbelltown Library Community Chess teams! Once again they played some amazing chess. However, as this is a school competition and the Campbelltown Library teams are not a school, the School Shield for the C Grade will this year go to Walkerville. Once again, congratulations to everyone! 3

4 Deputy Mayor Jill Whittaker Award Thanks to the support of Deputy Mayor Jill Whittaker, the Campbelltown library teams are able to participate in the South Australian Chess League Interschool Competition. Teams of 4 from different schools from around the state compete against each other in different sections and the top 2 teams per pool get to play in the state finals. The Campbelltown library teams are slightly different as they are comprised of students from different schools who do not have a school chess team or have not made it onto their school chess team because for example the school thinks they are still too young. 4 years ago a library team entered in the school competition and that has grown each year. This year we submitted 4 teams (1 B grade and 3 C grade teams). Last year the Campbelltown C grade team was the youngest team ever to make it to the finals with year 1, 2 and 3 players only. The Campbelltown community teams have always been financially supported by the Campbelltown council and this year by Deputy Mayor Jill Whittaker specifically. On Sunday the Campbelltown Library Chess teams celebrated the outstanding success of the many children who compete and do so well in the SA competitions. Ethan took the prize for most improved player for the year. The giant chess board provided new challenges. Graeme from Morialta Rotary Club cooked a fantastic barbecue for the parents and children. 4

5 Adelaide Hills Individual Competition What an amazing Tournament! 56 students participated in the Hills Individual Championship! This is the largest turn out yet and caused a little bit of happy chaos. On Monday night 18 th August the Individual Adelaide Hills Chess Tournament came to a close. Students from year 1 to year 8 battled it out over 7 rounds at the St Michael s Lutheran Church Hall in Hahndorf. Over a dozen players walked away with amazing trophies, whilst all students received a certificate of participation. This is the third time the individual tournament was held and attracted students from Uraidla, Scott Creek, Mount Barker, Hahndorf, Stirling, Nairne and Littlehampton. It starts with the classical variation and then quickly moves onto the very interesting Panov-Botvinnik variation and finishes with Two Knights Variation. I m not sure I have a preference. Theoretically White has an advantage in having the first move and wins more often than black at the highest level. However because of this black can have a psychological advantage and choose from one of many defenses in order to take advantage of an opponent s temperament or character. For example against an impatient and over aggressive opponent one might induce them to over extend or engage in premature attack by employing a defense such as Alekhines (1 Nf6) against 1.e4 6

What was your favourite game so far: I have allot of favourite games but I d have to say one of my very favourites was played in 1974 between Anatoly Karpov and Victor Korchnoi.

7 What was your favourite game so far: I have allot of favourite games but I d have to say one of my very favourites was played in 1974 between Anatoly Karpov and Victor Korchnoi. It s a Sicilian Dragon Yugoslav attack variation game that was played before the benefit of computers in chess and demonstrates a beautiful blend of defense, attack and the marshalling of all ones forces towards a common goal by the future World Champion. What is your favourite opening: I wish I had a simple answer for this. Through the years I have been infatuated with many openings and for me it s really a question of mood now. However, if I had to choose only one it would probably be The Kings Indian Defense because of the many different strategies and explosive possibilities that lie hidden beneath the surface of this delayed commitment defense. Why do you like to play chess: Personally the most enjoyable attribute of chess for me is its unique ability to connect you with history and get into the mind and times of for example someone who played 100 years ago. Simply by playing through a random game of chess one can often identify the period it was played in or even the specific players based on contemporary style, technique and opening theory. When solving a chess problem that was composed in say 1872 and arriving at the solution I can t help but feel in some way connected to the author and the period through mutual thought. Chess is the only thing that has ever given me that kind of spine tingling thrill. 7

8 School Holiday Activities Every School holiday we have been organising activities at the Campbelltown library and at Nairne Primary school. They make for a great activity to get together, learn and play in a small tournament. We say let the photo s do the talking! 8

10 SAJCL Individual State Championships On Thursday and Friday 9 th and 10 th October the Individual State Championships were held at the chess centre in the city. It was great to see so many students participate, from the Adelaide Hills and greater Adelaide City. Please find below a list with the final standings.
