Chapter 1 : Garry Kasparov - Wikipedia Garry Kasparov on Garry Kasparov: Part II is the second volume in a major three-volume series made unique by the fact that it records the greatest chess battles played by the greatest chess player of all-time. At five years old, young Garry Weinstein taught himself how to play chess from watching his relatives solve chess puzzles in a newspaper. His immense natural talent was soon realized and from age 7, he attended the Young Pioneer Palace in Baku where for some time he was known as "Garry Bronstein". At 10, he began training at the Mikhail Botvinnik Soviet chess school. The next several years were spent marking his rise as a world-class talent. He became World Junior Champion in in Dortmund, the same year he earned the grandmaster title. National He first qualified for the Soviet Chess Championship at age 15 in, the youngest ever player at that level. He won the player Swiss system tournament at Daugavpils on tiebreak over Igor Vasilievich Ivanov, to capture the sole qualifying place. World On the basis of his result in the Soviet Championship, which doubled as a zonal tournament for the USSR region, he earned a place in the Moscow Interzonal tournament, which he won, to qualify for the Candidates Tournament matches that were held in and At age 19, he was the youngest Candidate since Robert James Fischer, who was 15 when he qualified in At this stage, he was already the 2-rated player in the world, trailing only world champion Karpov on the January list. These Candidates matches were the first and last Candidates matches Kasparov contested, as he declined to participate in the Candidates held under the auspices of the PCA in to decide a challenger to his successor as classical World Champion, Vladimir Kramnik. By the time the match with Smyslov was played, Kasparov had become the number-one ranked player in the world with a FIDE rating of He became the youngest ever world number-one, a record that lasted 12 years until being broken by Vladimir Kramnik in January and again by his former pupil, Magnus Carlsen in At one stage during the Karpov - Kasparov World Championship Match, Kasparov trailed in the first-to-win-6 match. Further details can be found in the match link at the head of this paragraph. He was then 22, the youngest ever World Champion, and broke the record held by Mikhail Tal for over 20 years. Karpov exercised his right to a rematch, the Karpov - Kasparov World Championship Rematch, which took place in, hosted jointly in London and Leningrad, with each city hosting 12 games. The fifth and last championship match between the two, Kasparov - Karpov World Championship Match, was held in New York and Lyon in, with each city hosting 12 games. Kasparov subsequently defended his title against Nigel Short under the auspices of the PCA in, and against Viswanathan Anand in Five years later, in Kasparov - Kramnik World Championship Match, Kasparov finally relinquished his crown to his former student, Vladimir Kramnik, who was granted the right to challenge without having to qualify, the first time this had happened since, when Alexander Alekhine selected Max Euwe as his challenger. Subsequently, Kasparov remained the top rated player in the world, ahead of both Kramnik and the FIDE World Champions, on the strength of a series of wins in major tournaments. But this match was cancelled when Ponomariov was dissatisfied with the terms of the contract. Shortly after this, Kasparov announced his retirement from competitive chess. It was a serious miscalculation on my part. I thought we could start fresh with a professional organisation, but there was little support among the players. It led to short-term progress in commercial sponsorship for chess, but in the long run hurt the game He took first place with an undefeated record, two points ahead of the field. Banja Luka He emerged with a provisional rating of, immediately landing at world number 15, a feat only surpassed by Gata Kamsky in July His first win in a superclass-level international tournament was scored at Bugojno, Yugoslavia in, and his win in Linares in was the tenth victory in a row, a record for the most consecutive victories in super tournaments: Linares 4,,,, Wijk aan Zee 3,,, Sarajevo 2, and Astana 1 Kasparov also holds the record for most consecutive professional tournament victories, placing first or equal first in 15 individual tournaments from to His five epic title matches against Karpov were held during this period. Subsequently, Kasparov won Linares again in,,,,,, and, the latter being his swan song from the game. Olympiads Kasparov played in eight Olympiads. He represented the Soviet Union four times, in,, and, and Russia four times: Team chess Kasparov made his international teams debut for the USSR at age 16 in the European Team Championship at Skara and played for Russia in the Page 1

edition of that championship. The match was even after five games but Kasparov lost Game 6 - Deep Blue vs Kasparov, - to lose the match. This was the first time a computer had ever defeated a world champion in match play. In November, he played and drew a four-game Man - Machine World Chess Championship against the computer program X3D Fritz Computer X3D Fritz, although he was constrained through the use of a virtual board, 3D glasses and a speech recognition system. Full details can be seen at Game Collection: He fared better in the internet blitz match against Judit Polgar, winning one and drawing one. The following year, he played a blitz match against the many times Greek speed chess champion Hristos Banikas of Greece, winning 5 and drawing one. In his blitz against Elisabeth Paehtz in Munich, he won In, he played a simul against the same albeit slightly stronger team, but this time he was prepared and crushed the Hamburg players ; later in he also crushed the Swiss team: Kasparov vs Swiss Team Simul by 5. In he played a simul against the French team in Evry Game Collection: Kasparov vs French Team Simul, winning 4, drawing one and losing one; he played the French team again in Game Collection: Kasparov vs French Team Simul, this time winning three and drawing 3 games. In, Kasparov played a clock simul against the German team Game Collection: Kasparov vs German National Team Simul which included former title contender Vlastimil Hort with whom he drew, winning 2 and drawing 2. He played a simul against the Argentinean team Game Collection: He was the world number-one ranked player for months, a record that far outstrips all other previous and current number-one ranked players. Kasparov had the highest Elo rating in the world continuously from to He was also briefly ejected from the list following his split from FIDE in, but during that time he headed the rating list of the rival PCA. At the time of his retirement, he was still ranked 1 in the world, with a rating of There was a time in the early s when Kasparov was over and the only person in the s was Anatoly Karpov. Since his retirement, Kasparov has concentrated much of his time and energy in Russian politics. His politics and authorship are discussed at some detail in the wiki article and at his official website cited below. Kasparov has been married three times: Page 2

Chapter 2 : Garry Kasparov's Best Attacks, Part 2 - blog.quintoapp.com The second volume of Kasparov's magnum opus covers Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov and Tal, who were World Champions between and In contrast to Volume 1, this one is mostly about people the author knew well. He was being trained by Alexander Shakarov during this time. In, Kasparov participated in the Sokolsky Memorial tournament in Minsk. He had been invited as an exception but took first place and became a chess master. Kasparov has repeatedly said that this event was a turning point in his life, and that it convinced him to choose chess as his career. He has also said that after the victory, he thought he had a very good shot at the World Championship. He won the player Swiss system tournament at Daugavpils on tiebreak over Igor V. Ivanov to capture the sole qualifying place. Kasparov rose quickly through the World Chess Federation rankings. Starting with an oversight by the Russian Chess Federation, he participated in a grandmaster tournament in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina then part of Yugoslavia, in while still unrated he was a replacement for the Soviet defector Viktor Korchnoi, who was originally invited but withdrew due to the threat of a boycott from the Soviets. Kasparov won this high-class tournament, emerging with a provisional rating of, enough to catapult him to the top group of chess players at the time, number 15 in the world [26]. Later that year, he made his debut as second reserve for the Soviet Union at the Chess Olympiad at Valletta, Malta, and became a Grandmaster. His first win in a superclass-level international tournament was scored at Bugojno, Bosnia and Herzegovina in He earned a place in the Moscow Interzonal tournament, which he won, to qualify for the Candidates Tournament. At this stage, he was already the No. Korchnoi had defected from the Soviet Union in, and was at that time the strongest active non-soviet player. Various political maneuvers prevented Kasparov from playing Korchnoi, and Kasparov forfeited the match. The Kasparov-Korchnoi match was put together on short notice by Raymond Keene. Kasparov lost the first game but won the match 7â 4 four wins, one loss. In January, Kasparov became the No. He became the youngest ever world No. Karpov started in very good form, and after nine games Kasparov was down 4â 0 in a "first to six wins" match. Fellow players predicted he would be whitewashed 6â 0 within 18 games. Kasparov lost game 27 5â 0, then fought back with another series of draws until game 32 5â 1, earning his first-ever win against the World Champion. Alexander Alekhine in The termination was controversial, as both players stated that they preferred the match to continue. Announcing his decision at a press conference, Campomanes cited the health of the players, which had been strained by the length of the match. The match became the first, and so far only, world championship match to be abandoned without result. This section needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. The scores from the terminated match would not carry over; however, in the event of a 12â 12 draw, the title would remain with Karpov. On 9 November, Kasparov secured the title by a score of 13â 11, winning the 24th game with Black, using a Sicilian defense. He was 22 years old at the time, making him the youngest ever World Champion, [30] and breaking the record held by Mikhail Tal for over 20 years. As part of the arrangements following the aborted match, Karpov had been granted in the event of his defeat a right to rematch. Another match took place in, hosted jointly in London and Leningrad, with each city hosting 12 games. At one point in the match, Kasparov opened a three-point lead and looked well on his way to a decisive match victory. But Karpov fought back by winning three consecutive games to level the score late in the match. This match was very close, with neither player holding more than a one-point lead at any time during the contest. Kasparov was down one full point at the time of the final game, and needed a win to draw the match and retain his title. A long tense game ensued in which Karpov blundered away a pawn just before the first time control, and Kasparov eventually won a long ending. Kasparov retained his title as the match was drawn by a score of 12â All this meant that Kasparov had played Karpov four times in the period â 87, a statistic unprecedented in chess. Matches organized by FIDE had taken place every three years since, and only Botvinnik had a right to a rematch before Karpov. A fifth match between Kasparov and Karpov was held in New York and Lyon in, with each city hosting 12 games. In their five world championship matches, Kasparov had 21 wins, 19 losses, and draws in games. Kasparov assumed a leadership role. Nigel Short, a Page 3

British grandmaster who had defeated Anatoly Karpov in a qualifying match, and then Jan Timman in the finals held in early In an interview in, Kasparov called the break with FIDE the worst mistake of his career, as it hurt the game in the long run. The match considerably raised the profile of chess in the UK, with an unprecedented level of coverage on Channel 4. Thus, till this was in effect, there was a parallel rating list presented by PCA which featured all world top players, regardless of their relation to FIDE. There were now two World Champions: The title remained split for 13 years. Kasparov won the match by four wins to one, with thirteen draws. It was the last World Championship to be held under the auspices of the PCA, which collapsed when Intel, one of its major backers, withdrew its sponsorship. Alexei Shirov and Vladimir Kramnik played a candidates match to decide the challenger, which Shirov won in a surprising upset. But when Rentero admitted that the funds required and promised had never materialized, the WCA collapsed. This left Kasparov stranded, and yet another organization stepped inâ BrainGames. No match against Shirov was arranged, and talks with Anand collapsed, so a match was instead arranged against Kramnik. During this period, Kasparov was approached by Oakham School in the United Kingdom, at the time the only school in the country with a full-time chess coach, [34] and developed an interest in the use of chess in education. In, Kasparov supported a scholarship programme at the school. Losing the title and aftermath[ edit ] Kasparov playing against Vladimir Kramnik in the Botvinnik Memorial match in Moscow, The Kasparov-Kramnik match took place in London during the latter half of Kasparov made a critical error in Game 10 with the Nimzo-Indian Defence, which Kramnik exploited to win in 25 moves. After losing the title, Kasparov won a series of major tournaments, and remained the top rated player in the world, ahead of both Kramnik and the FIDE World Champions. In he refused an invitation to the Dortmund Candidates Tournament for the Classical title, claiming his results had earned him a rematch with Kramnik. Karpov surprised the experts and emerged victoriously, winning two games and drawing one. But this match was called off after Ponomariov refused to sign his contract for it without reservation. These also fell through due to lack of funding. Plans to hold the match in Turkey instead came too late. Kasparov announced in January that he was tired of waiting for FIDE to organize a match and so had decided to stop all efforts to regain the World Championship title. Retirement from chess[ edit ] After winning the prestigious Linares tournament for the ninth time, Kasparov announced on 10 March that he would retire from serious competitive chess. He cited as the reason a lack of personal goals in the chess world he commented when winning the Russian championship in that it had been the last major title he had never won outright and expressed frustration at the failure to reunify the world championship. Kasparov said he may play in some rapid chess events for fun, but intends to spend more time on his books, including both the My Great Predecessors series see below and a work on the links between decision-making in chess and in other areas of life, and will continue to involve himself in Russian politics, which he views as "headed down the wrong path". Kasparov has been married three times: It consisted of four rapid or semi rapid games, in which Kasparov won 3â 1, and eight blitz games, in which Kasparov won 6â 2, winning the match with total result 9â 3. The collaboration remained secret until September While the pair initially planned to work together throughout, [43] in March of that year it was announced that Carlsen had split from Kasparov and would no longer be using him as a trainer. The second was a longer match consisting of eight blitz games played on 9 October, against English grandmaster Nigel Short. A little after that, in October, Kasparov played and defeated fourteen opponents in a simultaneous exhibition that took place in Bratislava. The match consisted of two rapid games and eight blitz games. At the post-tournament interview, he considered the possibility of playing future top-level blitz exhibition matches. He won all games. Louis Rapid and Blitz tournament from 14â 19 August, scoring 3. However, in, he left the party and together with his family fled from Baku to Moscow on a chartered plane [64] when pogroms against Armenians in Baku took place forcing thousands of ethnic Armenians to flee Azerbaijan. In his acceptance speech Kasparov lauded the defeat of communism while also urging the United States to give no financial assistance to central Soviet leaders. He noted that he did not know about the membership and suggested he was included in the board by accident because he received the Keeper of the Flame award from this organization. In he voiced his support for the Russian television channel NTV. Kasparov has criticized these groups as being secretly under the auspices of the Kremlin. The assailant was reported to have said "I Page 4

admired you as a chess player, but you gave that up for politics" immediately before the attack. Kasparov, who was briefly arrested by the Moscow police, was warned by the prosecution office on the eve of the march that anyone participating risked being detained. He was held for some 10 hours and then fined and released. There is only one man who is vocal and he may be in trouble: He has been very outspoken in his attacks on Putin and I believe that he is probably next on the list. Later that month he traveled to the United States, where he appeared on several popular television programs, which were hosted by Stephen Colbert, Wolf Blitzer, Bill Maher, and Chris Matthews. Detention at rally[ edit ] On 24 November, Kasparov and other protesters were detained by police at an Other Russia rally in Moscow. Following an attempt by about protesters to march through police lines to the electoral commission, which had barred Other Russia candidates from parliamentary elections, arrests were made. The Russian authorities stated a rally had been approved but not any marches, resulting in several detained demonstrators. Kasparov appealed the charges, citing that he had been following orders given by the police, although it was denied. He was released from jail on 29 November. With the deadline expiring on that date, he explained it was impossible for him to run. Page 5

Chapter 3 : Garry Kasparov on Garry Kasparov - PART 2 (Chess Book) ebay This lecture was given at Center64 (blog.quintoapp.comcom) on February 25, In this second and final installment, FM Warren Harper and Lucas Anderson present Kasparov's life from to the present. The conventional wisdom is that was a tumultuous year, an annus horribilis full scandals, disasters, and a negative trend that we can only hope to reverse in the coming year. I am not going to deny there have been many challenges and outright disasters in the past year, of course. After all, the first step in making things better is to make an honest evaluation. There are, however, plenty of silver linings to be found, as well as some inarguably positive developments. Donald Trump is unstable, autocratic by nature, and obsessed only with his own image; his presidency threatens to unbalance decades of relative post-cold War stability. But if someone like Trump can shake the democratic foundations of the United States, how stable were those foundations? As I warned back in February, Trumpism is exposing the many cracks that existed in the separation of powers, conflicts of interest, the relationship of the free press with politics and business, and the deep divides separating many Americans on social and economic issues. All those issues already existed and were slowly getting worse under the radar. Thanks to Trump, Americans and people in many other democratic nations are actively fighting back against the threat of anti-democratic forces from abroad and in their own countries. In this regard, the US investigation into Russian influence on the election is important. Will it be allowed to conclude? Believing in positive change, and taking action to create it, is how we get others to accompany our efforts and make it real. This is also true in tech, where I believe strongly in the self-fulfilling prophecy of our innovations like artificial intelligence. If we believe things will go well, we are more likely to invest in the future and take more risksâ exactly the behavior that make things go well! It has been a mixed blessing to become a sort of visiting expert not on chess, or even human-machine or Russia or decision-making, but as the voice of experience in how a democracy becomes an autocracy. But the lessons of the fragility of democracy must not be forgotten. It must be taught and learned anew by each generation of citizens. I logged a record number of hours in the air, which is quite something considering how much I always travel. This perpetual motion was mostly the result of rising interest in my areas of interest: Russia, human rights, and human-machine collaboration. It was timed for the 20th anniversary of my famous rematch with the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue in, but it turned out to be ideally timed for the huge wave of interest and real-world impact of artificial intelligenceâ or, as is more accurate in many cases, augmented intelligence. My business lectures have always focused on human strategic thinking, and that is still true. The difference now is that working with algorithms and big data is an essential element of that strategy for nearly every business. At every event, I hear from experts in other fields about how increasingly vital the theme of human-machine collaboration is, from medical diagnosis to asset management to cyber-security. At several events for McKinsey, I discussed the moment at which humans must go from experts to operators in order to gain the greatest benefit from intelligent machines. In every case, I emphasize the eternal value of human creativity and purpose. I made several appearances with a specific focus on security as part of my continuing partnership with Avast Software, a premier digital security firm. The goal is to keep having this conversation and to thereby create better humans, not just smarter machines. The focus here has been on putting pressing issues in front of governmental bodies before there is a crisis. A new challenge for me was the production of my online video chess Master Class, which was just released this week. You can check out the trailer if you doubt my words. Our goal from the beginning has been to promote chess in the education system, and that continues to be an expanding success. I was happy to help promote the great work Rex Sinquefield and his Saint Louis team do for chess, and in that regard, my participation was a real success. Best wishes to all from the entire Kasparov family. Let be the year in which we apply the many hard lessons we learned in Page 6

Chapter 4 : Garry Kasparov on My Great Predecessors, Part 2 by Garry Kasparov Garry Kasparov on Garry Kasparov: Part II is the second volume in a major three-volume series made unique by the fact that it records the greatest chess battles played by the greatest chessplayer of all-time. Our candid minute chat covered a variety of topics. In the first part of the Bisik-Bisik session, Garry talked about his recent speaking engagements across Asia, his fascination with Malaysia, growing up years and most importantly, his collaboration with Magnus Carlsen. In this part 2 Garry took a walk down memory lane to talk about the preparations made for his very first match against Karpov and the recent K-K anniversary exhibition match. You are well-known for your intense, thorough and deep pre-match and competition preparations â especially in your matches against Karpov. As is the 25th anniversary of the first K-K match can you perhaps use the match against Karpov to illustrate the depth and breadth of your preparation on the eve of that match? Playing a title match against the world champion himself was fundamentally different to any other Candidates Match before that. I knew then that I would be up against the world champion, a fighter who is most experienced in play at the highest level with a totally different resistance threshold. The match was one that without a maximum set number of games â the winner was supposed to be the first person to score six wins. Since Karpov had lost quite rarely back then, in order to win this match, I knew that I had to regularly make moves of the highest quality, and this demanded far more serious preparation. I had a five-month time before the match to rest and to prepare for the unknown test. I had a group of four chess trainers, Nikitin, Shakarov, Vladimirov and Timoschenko throughout my preparation. Dorfman came to assist me at the start of the main match, while Adorjan participated in the final pre-match training session. This was a very small team compared to the resources that Karpov had, but still, what mattered was that we had a plan to prepare for the match. After that, we compiled a list of chess openings that were most likely to occur in the match, with a preference to variations leading to complicated and at times intricate positions. From here onwards, we began concrete chess opening preparations. This is a most important part of the preparation for any important chess match, and our work here included studying a number of variations for both the black and white sides of the same chess opening. All these work, which were the result of hours and hours of prolonged brainstorming together with my highly-qualified trainers throughout a five-month period, helped me greatly in the critical situation, which arose soon after the start of the match. Against Karpov in the match, you came up a little short in the dynamism vs. You learnt well and about a year and a half later in the match, you were a changed man. What specific plans did you put in place prior to the match? One of the key challenges the Kasparov team had prior to the second match was time. We drew up a six-month schedule that included both relaxation and independent work, besides three twenty-day sessions with my trainers and helpers. And, thereafter began my first of the three twenty-day sessions with my trainers. Here, we continued our work on chess openings, besides working to improve my positional technique. We also included as part of the session some form of physical training, whereby we went running barefoot along the beach besides swimming in the sea, cycling and football. Kasparov vs Karpov in the Tchaikowsky Theatre in Moscow The summer months went by very quickly and in September the match with Karpov commenced. Here, I felt far more confident than say, one year back. I had become stronger and had more stamina and my style of play was more balanced and universal. My store of opening ideas had been thoroughly replenished and I am now ready for a renewed battle with the mighty Karpov! This represented the most extreme of chess preparations. Can you please share with us on what you think is the ideal preparation plan of a modern-day chess professional prior to competition? You must be constantly updated with all the improvements in the modern-day game of chess. Now that I am working with Magnus, Alexander Shakarov and I will always go to TWIC and we will look at the regular issues, just to see the games â all the relevant ones. You have to follow, you have to update your database and you have to be aware about the improvements. And, those are just general tournaments. As for, big tournaments like Moscow, I am always following them. Today, in a week, or in 24 hours, or live, people can see all these games. Your creativity is more important, because you have to process these games and invent something new. Kasparov and Carlsen working on notebook computers and with a chessboard Fast Page 7

forward to What are your thoughts on the recent K-K match? The K-K match in Valencia was a great story. But, it is such a pity that the K-K match was again the biggest story in the world of chess. There is something wrong and I think the world of chess has stagnated. I played the match against Karpov to drive some awareness about the game and to re-construct the good old days when chess was really popular and made it to the front page of almost every major newspaper in the world. I liked the experience, although the match was not really of any significance. Well, not that I am in my best shape right now. He is right, and I am not going to argue with his assessment there, as Karpov played for seven-and-a-half hours and I played for six hours and 15 minutes. But, one thing Kramnik forgot to mention is that I had the strongest simultaneous â the highest average amongst the players, higher than Kramnik, Anand or Topalov. These are little things that he should mention. Kasparov and Karpov with the reigning World Champion Viswanathan Anand in Zurich For me, playing in simultaneous displays is kind of a compensation for not playing chess. So, when I do play in simultaneous, I take it seriously, and if I have strong players as opponents, I want to beat them. I beat all of the top three and I played some decent games. Kramnik cited one of these games, saying it was a good position. He is right, probably that I am rusty compared to my best years. But, still, I am capable of finding good moves. With the game still fresh in his mind Kasparov analysed with Matthias Deutschmann, a player in the German Bundesliga, who took notes during the session. Deutschmann is a well-known humorist and cabaret artist, who has supplied the German voice to our chess program Fritz. Board 8 [A31] Zurich Year Jubilee simul, Kasparov himself has played Bc5 in this position. Fritz prefers the line An alternative considered by Kasaprov was A self-critical Kasparov gave this move a question mark. In this variation Black would still have some play. Very elegant and study-like! For a game in a simultaneous exhibition this is quite sensational It is interesting to see how long the best chess engines in the world take to find this line. Grudge Match in Valencia Now to mark the 25th anniversary Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov will play a game match â four rapid and eight blitz games â from 21 to 24 September,, in Valencia, Spain. Match start in Valencia today The rounds start on Tuesday at NY, with two days of rapid games and one for blitz. Watch it on Playchess. Kasparov starts with crunch Garry Kasparov started his commemorative match against eternal rival Anatoly Karpov with two quick wins. The first game was over in 24 moves, when Karpov overstepped his time; and the second ended in 28 moves after a flashy kingside attack by Kasparov. The international press is reporting extensively, and we have some interesting video documents. Karpov wins game three, Kasparov wins the match In the final game Garry Kasparov only needed a draw, but put on the pressure until Karpov crumbled and lost â again â on time. The final score of 3. Illustrated report with videos. Karpov drew first blood, Kasparov took a "deep breath" move draw to clear his head, and then went on to score five wins in a row. The final game was a draw, leaving Kasparov winning the blitz with 6. Video interview with Garry Kasparov on Valencia The interview is presented in two sections. Here for your enjoyment is part one. That is tragic, says Garry Kasparov â when two old guys, one retired, the other no longer a real force in the game, still are the greatest show in the world of chess. Not a line of blah in this interview. Viktor Bologan and the Chebanenko Slav The author is Moldavia GM Viktor Bologan, who looks back on a two decade long career, which includes a Dortmund triumph ahead of Anand and Kramnik. That came, incidentally, after a ten-day training session with Garry Kasparov. Read all about it in this Bisik-Bisik session with Edwin Lam. Some of us will also associate him with the French Defence, an opening that he used to play regularly many years ago. But away from the chess board, this man is also very well known for his witty reports and articles on chess. Edwin Lam interviews the chess writer. Today "El Khalif" runs a training web site and publishes books. After this short lesson in Chinese first encounters we bring you a portrait of the Chinese dream couple: Bisik-Bisik Malay for "whisperings" by Edwin Lam. Bisik-Bisik with Viktor Moskalenko He kicks off with a conversation between Edwin and Ukrainian Viktor Moskalenko, grandmaster, teacher and chess author. About the author Caption: Page 8

Chapter 5 : Simply the Best: Garry Kasparov Part 2 - blog.quintoapp.com Garry Kasparov on Garry Kasparov, part 2 is the second book in a major new three-volume series. This series will be unique by the fact that it will record the greatest chess battles played by the greatest chessplayer of all-time. In contrast to Volume 1, this one is mostly about people the author knew well. During this period, chess was dominated by the Soviet School. Botvinnik and his contemporaries spent their most active years under Stalin, who, like Lenin, was a keen chessplayer. He considers that he was one of the three truly great World Champions the other two being Steinitz and Fischer, and transformed the nature of the game with his impartial, scientific approach. Kasparov describes the process from his own unique viewpoint, and one cannot help being extremely impressed. But you constantly feel Stalin there in the background. Kasparov, who is absolutely not a Stalinist, tries to show you how it was possible for someone to admire this brutal dictator, to accept many favors from him, and still to be a decent, honest person with a strong sense of right and wrong. On the one hand, Botvinnik was the darling of the Soviet Communist Party, who accorded him all sorts of unusual privileges - his wife was even allowed to accompany him to tournaments in the West! An even more striking example: He of course had to ask his superiors for permission, and it seems likely that the positive reply was dictated by Stalin himself. And despite this, he somehow still managed to stay true to his own ideals, and maintain his sense of his own worth. The Soviet authorities were only too keen to help Botvinnik in any way possible, and I found it interesting to see which forms of help he was prepared to accept, and which he refused. Play was split between The Hague and Moscow. On the way to Moscow, Euwe, who had previously been a tough opponent for Botvinnik, had his notebooks confiscated by the customs officials, who they claimed thought that the chess moves might be code. Botvinnik intervened, and had them returned to him. Euwe was grateful, but it appears that the contents were copied, and his secrets were passed on to the Soviet players. On the other hand, Botvinnik adamantly refused several offers to have other Soviets throw key matches to him; he made it clear that he would resign games he thought were being fixed in his favor. Kasparov, clearly impressed, says he does not know how he managed this. One down with two to play, Botvinnik desperately needs a win. The game is adjourned in a complex endgame, where he has chances, but everything depends on his sealed move the last move of the session, written down and put into a secret envelope. When Botvinnik leaves the hall, Flohr runs up to him, and tells him his thoughts. Bb1 wins in all variations, and he can prove it. Flohr, exhausted and overwrought, breaks down and cries openly. But Botvinnik still manages somehow to win the game, and retains his title. Not to be able to trust anyone, not even your closest friend, for fear that he will betray you.
