3 Berkshire Junior Chess This Year Book has been produced by the Berkshire Junior Chess Committee. The committee members are mostly parents with chess playing children. Berkshire Junior Chess operates in the 6 local authority areas of Berkshire, which are West Berkshire, Reading, Wokingham, Slough, Bracknell Forest and Windsor and Maidenhead, and in the RG postcode areas of Oxfordshire, which are RG4 Sonning Common, RG8 Woodcote and RG9 Henley-on-Thames. Berkshire Junior Chess would like to thank all the individuals and organisations who have helped and supported our young chess players. We are especially grateful to all schools who have hosted tournaments and Saturday Afternoon Events over the last year. Refreshments Both the parents and children that attend chess events in Berkshire appreciate the refreshments that are provided. BJCA would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped; without your continued support, BJCA would not be able to provide these refreshments. However Kate is looking for someone to oversee the organisation of refreshments. If you think you can do this, maybe with as a joint venture, please contact Kate Tunstall at kate@thetuns.com Activities Teams are entered in National Championships, including the English Primary Schools Chess Association U9, U11 & U11 girls championships. Matches are played against other counties. Tournaments are held on Saturday Afternoons at various schools in Berkshire with one event at each school. There is an annual Championship in October or November, and a Berkshire Megafinal of the UK Chess Challenge in May. During the summer term there is a lightning tournament. There is also a primary schools league. Details can be found at Training This year s training will be provided by the Institute of Chess (IoC), and experienced professional trainers, including a FIDE senior trainer. Children will be split into 3 groups according to their playing level. The training is open to all junior chess players in Berkshire: 3

4 How to Receive Information Parents need to complete a Berkshire Junior Chess Registration Form. Registered players receive information, including entry forms and a fixture list, by at intervals during the season, and the Year Book at the beginning of the season. Registration ends on 31 st December each year, when a new form is required to be completed for the next year. Website The Berkshire Junior Chess website provides a timely results service. Results are usually posted within a few days, often with a report and photos. There is a comprehensive calendar of forthcoming events and details for all players who have entered BJCA events. This includes BJCA and ECF grades for players who have played a sufficient number of games. All BJCA registered players receive a regular newsletter with headline results. You can also use the MyWebSite function to register for the results service: Parental Responsibility Organisers accept no responsibility for any loss, theft or accident during an event. Adult supervision will only be provided in the playing areas. Parents are responsible for their children during all events, and agree to the terms and conditions on entry forms as a condition of entry, and that a players grading information may be published electronically. Help from parents will be much appreciated whether a chess player or not. Photographs Photographs may be published on the Berkshire Junior Chess website. Individual children will not be identified. If you would prefer that photographs of your children were not displayed, please contact the Webmaster Brent Smith. Maidenhead Junior Chess Club Maidenhead Junior Chess Club suitable for beginners from age about 6, meets on Saturday mornings from 9.30a.m. to 11.15a.m. during the school term at Ridgeway School, Cannon Lane, Maidenhead. Last season, there were some 20 Primary schools taking part, divided into an "A" league and a number of area-based "B" league divisions. The qualifying round for the "B" league is a single 4 team all-play-all event after school, and takes place in March at various schools around Berkshire. The final will be in early May. Teams consist of 5 players. There is no charge for taking part in the league. In addition to the league, there was a primary school team jamboree on Thursday, October 10 at Dolphin School, Hurst, and another for players aged under 9 in March, 2014 at Ridgeway School. 12 White to play and mate in two moves This Year s Problem Black (10 Men) White (10 Men) Problem by Charles Edward Kemp published in the Western Daily Mercury 1919 Charles Kemp is a former headmaster of Reading School, and first had one of his problems published in a newspaper when he was age 15. This problem was set in the Winton Capital British Chess Solving Championship held at Eton College on Saturday 23rd February It was one of three mate in two problems for which 20 minutes was allowed for solving. As it is quite difficult, here is a clue. The key move does not make a threat. However White can give mate to every Black reply.
