We all know how important it is to keep math and reading skills sharp during the months of July and August. By the end of first grade, students are expected to fluently know addition and subtraction facts to 10. n order to maintain this level of proficiency and to be prepared for Grade 2, we are requesting that students practice basic facts over the summer. You can use the attached page to create your own set of primary number cards and use them to create number sentences. See example below. + 4 Rita B. 2 Summer Math Learning Packet Students Entering Grade 2 Dear Students and Families, Get ready to discover mathematics all around you this summer! Just like with reading, regular practice over the summer with problem solving, computation, and math facts will maintain and strengthen the mathematic gains you have made over the school year. nside you will find creative mathematics activities you can explore at home. The goal is for you to have fun thinking and working collaboratively to communicate mathematical ideas. While you are working, think about how you found the solution and why you chose a particular strategy. The packet consists of a July and August calendar page. Literature and websites are also recommended to explore mathematics in new ways. We encourage you to complete at least 16 math days each month. f you want to keep track of the work that you did, you can create a math journal and bring it to school the first day to share with your teacher. Don t forget that if you read any math books, you can add them to the Governor s Reading Challenge List. Have a math-e-magical summer! Sincerely, Mrs. Santilli Some ideas for this math packet taken from: Miltord Public Schools, Connecticut ( 26)ambridge Public Schools (httpi/www3.cpsd.us/mathlmath summer)
