1 Dear Parents/Guardians: Potomac Elementary Summer Fun! June 2015 This time of year the question that parents most often ask is, What can I do to help my child continue to learn over summer vacation? This year we will continue our summer learning opportunities that encourage students to use reading and math in their world. Students are encouraged to read many books over the summer. Talking about what your child is reading is a powerful way to build comprehension skills. Engaging in a natural conversation about a book can give you insight into what your child understands and helps build oral communication skills. Math is a part of everything in our world! We invite students to explore math in their world through fun websites, games, and problem solving. Your child will need to access their Google account for some of the apps included in this packet. This summer, we would love for your child to complete the following: Summer reading log: K-2 should read at least 20 minutes daily, 3-5 should read at least minutes daily At least 2 Postcards about their summer experiences A letter to the teacher At least 5 math websites, apps, or activities All materials are provided within this packet, and are available on the Potomac Elementary website Please return your summer Sincerely, Rebecca Silverman, Reading Specialist, Rebecca_S_Silverman@mcpsmd.org Blake Giliotti, Staff Development Specialist, Blake_M_Giliotti@mcpsmd.org learning activities and signature sheets to your homeroom teacher during the first week of school to receive a special treat!

3 Summer 2015 Writing Activity Please complete at least (2) postcards over the summer. You may use the postcards provided or send one of your own! The postcards may be mailed (US postage in the amount of 45 is required if mailed) OR dropped off to the school (a box will be labeled and placed in front of the office for drop offs). When you return to school, you will see your postcards displayed in the hallways. Directions for completing the postcards: 1. Send a postcard from wherever you travel or complete a generic postcard that has been provided for you. Write, and tell us about something new and exciting you did on your trip or during a summer day. Write a greeting such as Dear, Hi, etc.. You should write at least 3 sentences Include a closing such as: Love, Sincerely, etc.. Sign your name- both first and last names. Include your grade level -Extra copies of the postcards are available at school or on the school website. You can also use your own postcards! 2. Write a letter introducing yourself to your new teacher. Turn in the letter on the first day of school.

Do you want it cut into 6 slices or 8? Pepe asked. I am not that hungry Wanda said. Better make it just 6! What is wrong with Wanda s thinking? 2. Suppose you need to cut a piece of fabric exactly 34 inches long off a bolt of cloth. You have four pieces of string that measure 1 inch, 3 inches, 9 inches, and 27 inches. How can you measure the 34 inch length using each piece of string just once? 3. Kelly started selling magazine subscriptions. Each day, she sold twice as many subscriptions as she sold the day before. By the end of the fifth day, she had sold a total of 93 subscriptions. How many subscriptions did Kelly sell on the third day?

10 Family Math Games Concentration (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division): The object of the game is to find pairs of matching cards among an array of face down cards. Write basic fact sets on one set of index cards and the answers on another set. Shuffle the cards and lay them out face down. The first player turns over two cards. If they match, the player keeps the two cards and takes another turn. The next player continues by trying to find two matching cards. When all cards have been collected, the player with the most pairs wins. Race for $1.00: You need 30 pennies, 10 nickels, 20 dimes, 1 quarter, a dollar, 2 dice and a partner. Take turns. On your turn, roll the dice. The sum tells how many pennies to take. When you have 5 pennies, trade for a nickel. When you have 2 nickels, trade for a dime. When you have 2 dimes and one nickel, trade for a quarter. The first player to reach $1.00 is the winner. Guess My Number Player one picks a number from 0-99 and writes it down on a piece of paper. Player two makes a guess and writes it down. Player one gives a clue: Your guess is greater than my number or Your guess is less than my number. Continue playing until player two guesses player one s number. Switch jobs and play again. Number Family Rummy Use a deck of 40 cards: Four suits of ace through ten. The goal is to make families of three cards that are related by addition or subtraction. For example: 5, 5, and 10 are a family because = 10 and 10 5 = 5. Shuffle the deck and deal 6 cards to each player. Place the remaining cards face down in a pile. If you have any families of cards, place them aside. If you don t have any families, you may draw one from the pile and discard one of your own. You may also discard the one that you picked up, if you if you don t want it. The first player to get rid of all 6 cards (2 fact families) is the winner. The ace equals one. Grab Bag Subtraction Choose a number of things to work with, and put that many objects into a bag. You can use crayons, coins, beans, buttons, etc ) Grab a handful of the items and count them. Use subtraction to figure out how many items are now left in the bag. So if you put 100 items in the bag and pulled out 20, then you would write = 80. Let your partner have a turn, and whoever leaves the least amount in the bag is the winner.
11 What s Your Favorite Number? Ask someone his/her favorite number between 1 and 9. Then multiply the favorite number by 9. Multiply that by 123,456,789 and your friend will be surprised when he sees you writing his favorite digit over and over again in the answer. How to log onto your Google Account 1. You need Google chrome on your desktop. If you don t have Google Chrome, you can download the program for free. However, if you have an Apple device you can access Google Chrome through any web browser. 2.
