2 2 Perormance Notes I composed this piece summer o 2011 or a very special occasion: My math teacher told me she was adopting a baby girl rom Ethiopia. As I began to research Arican music, I became very interested in Arican music and communication, especially the very raw and natural tribal sounds. This piece has a strong rhythmic beat, making it eel like a tribal celebration. Cicero-North Syracuse High School Chorus, under the direction o Caryn Patterson, premiered the piece, the exact day my math teacher was in Arica picking up baby Grace Yeabsire Bowen. To those who knew o this event, this song became a song o welcome; no matter where one is rom, we can celebrate who we are. Ceej Oliver, (b.199), a native o Syracuse, New York, is currently studying at Long Island University-Post where he is pursuing a degree in Music Education with a ocus in voice and piano. He also studies composition with Carl Strommen. His compositions have premiered in the Syracuse and Long Island areas and he has received honorable mention in the NYSSMA (New York State School o Music Association) Call o Composition. Ceej is the ounder and director o Kusikia si: Voices or a Cause, a choir composed o high school and college students who desire to hone their choral skills while helping the community through musical projects.
