5 Numbers & Counting I ve learnt to skip-count, Wiz. I jumped from 2 to 4 to 6 to 8 to 10. Is there a special name for these numbers? Yes, Lucy. All the numbers that you landed on are called even numbers. When you start at 2, and skip-count in twos, you ll always land on an even number. This is fun! I m going to skip-count in twos again. This time I ll start at 9 and count backward 9, 7, 5, 3 and 1. Is there a special name for these numbers too? Yes, Lucy. All the numbers that you landed on are called odd numbers. If you start at 1 and skip-count in twos, you ll always land on an odd number. Even numbers always end in 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0. Odd numbers always end in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9. 6 Wiz, it s my friend Akira s birthday today. I m going to put 10 candles on his birthday cake. But I have only 7 candles. How many more candles do I need? That s easy! You can use your fingers to find out. Hold up 1 finger for each candle you have. Then, count the fingers that are left. That s the number of candles you need. I m holding up 7 fingers. 3 fingers are left. This means I need 3 more candles to make 10. Let s see the equation that Wiz has written. 7 3 = 10 Now let s head for Akira s birthday party! Addition Using your fingers is one of the easiest ways to figure out sums that need you to count up to 10. 7 Subtraction I have 5 biscuits. So, I ll hold up 5 fingers. Now, I ll fold 1 finger for each biscuit I give away. I m not holding up any fingers. This means I have no more biscuits left. 5 5 = 0 If you take away a number from itself, the answer will always be zero. 1-1=0 4-4=0 9-9=0 Look Wiz, I bought 5 dog biscuits. There are 5 dogs in the animal shelter. If I gave 1 biscuit to each dog, how many biscuits would be left? Lucy, you can use your fingers to find that out. 8 Look, Wiz. My mother has sent 2 boxes of cupcakes. I can t wait to eat them! I can see that there are 5 cupcakes in each box. Can you calculate all together how many cupcakes do we have? I can add the cupcakes in the two boxes. 5 5 = 10 I can even use multiplication to find the answer. 2 5 = 10 Mmm the cupcakes are delicious! I must send a thank you card to my mother. Multiplication After you are done multiplying, you can check your answer by adding the number of things in each set. The addition answer should be the same as the as the multiplication answer. 9 Division Mother has got 12 boxes of cherries for us. Let s put them in the fridge. My fridge has 4 shelves. I want each shelf to have the same number of boxes. How can I divide 12 boxes between 4 shelves? Let s take 4 boxes at a time and put a box on each shelf. Keep doing this until you have put all the boxes inside the fridge. I took 4 boxes at a time and put one box on each shelf. I was left with 8 boxes. I took 4 more boxes and put 1 more box on each shelf. I was left with 4 boxes. I put one more box on each shelf. All the boxes are now inside the fridge. I divided 12 boxes between 4 shelves and each shelf now has 3 boxes. I can write this as an equation = 3 Take some fruits from your kitchen and divide them equally between your family members. Is there some fruit left over? 10 Measurement Look, Wiz. There s an old clock buried in our garden. How can I read the time on this clock? Lucy the big hand of the clock is at 12. When the big hand is at 12, you can tell the time by looking only at the small hand. The small hand on the clock is called the hour hand because it tells us the hours. The big hand is called the minute hand because it tells us the minutes. The small hand of the clock is at 2. This means the time is 2 o clock. That s right, Lucy. 11 Numbers & Counting Addition Lucy and Wiz are playing hopscotch. You can play with them, too. Follow their instructions. If you land on an even number, colour it red. If you land on an odd number, colour it green. Lucy and Wiz are throwing a surprise birthday party for their friend, Akira. He is going to turn 10, and there will be 10 guests at the party. 3 hops forward starting from 1. 1 Lucy and Wiz need 10 of every item.
