2 Introduction This plan makes a twin bed that is 91 inches long and 60 inches wide. I have tried to ensure all steps are covered in these plans but if you find any errors in the plans or have a question then please me at info@andrewharriswoodwork.com to let me know. All my builds are made with pocket hole joinery. You will need a pocket hole jig tool such as a Kreg Pocket Hole Jig in order to build them. 3 Cut list Please read all instructions before cutting wood as shown below. I suggest some pieces are cut as you go to ensure a tight fit. To minimize the number of boards to use plan your cuts I have given details of which board I cut the piece from. If you find a more economical solution then please let me know. 4 Making the Legs Step 1 Make the Turrets for the Footboard Make the end pieces of the footboard using the 20 inch lengths of 23 by 4 and the 15 inch piece of 1 by 6. Inset the 1 by 6 piece by ½ inch. Make two of these. Page 4 of 24

5 Step 2 Complete the Footboard Join the two turret pieces together with the 1 by 3s as shown below. Page 5 of 24

Step 3 Add the portcullis upright pieces Use the 1 4inch pieces of 1 by 3 to add as the uprights pieces of the portcullis. Miter the end at 45 degrees to give the pointed end.

I left half an inch gap between these and the top of the top horizontal rail and fixed them using a 1 ¼ inch screw through where it crosses each horizontal rail. Page 6 of 24

Step 4 Make the side pieces of the two headboard turrets Make the four headboard side panels as shown below using 47inch 2 by 4 pieces and the 42 inch 1 by 12

8 Step 5 Make the Headboard Insert Make the headboard insert from the 4 pieces of 1 by 6 measuring 36 inches long. Page 8 of 24

10 Step 7 Headboard back rails Add the back headboard rails using the 36 inch lengths of 2 by 4, 1 by 4 and 1 by 6 as shown below. Make sure that you are joining these rails onto the side that has the ¾ inch inset not the larger inset. Page 10 of 24

11 Step 8 Add the shelves Add the two shelves in the headboard as shown using the two pieces of plywood measuring 37 ½ by 11 ¼ inches. Drill pocket holes in the side to be used as the underside of the shelf. Page 11 of 24

12 Step 9 Add the corbels If you are adding the corbels to add interest then add those now. Page 12 of 24

I then used a shelf pin jig to drill holes for the shelf pins.

13 Step 10 Add the Shelf Supports I added two pieces of trim as 2 ½ inches wide by ¼ inch thick to each of the internal sides of the towers to hide the pocket holes. I then used a shelf pin jig to drill holes for the shelf pins. Step 11 Make the Side Towers Add the two outside sides of the turrets. For each one use two of the 5 inch 1 by 3 pieces and the 5 inch wide piece that is 42 inches long. Front view Back view Page 13 of 24

14 Step 12 - Add the turret top platforms Add the top turret pieces that measure 9 inches by inches. Page 14 of 24

Step 13 - Add the turret bottom platforms Add the bottom turret pieces that measure 9 inches by 11.

16 Step 14 Make the turret shelves Make the shelves for the turrets. Bear in mind if painting not to make it too tight a fit when unpainted. I used two pieces of 1 by 6 cut to 8 ¼ inches in length joined together on the long side to make each shelf. I made 3 shelves for each side. Page 16 of 24

17 Step 15 Add shelf Rampart pieces Add the 5 inch lengths of 1 by 3. I fixed them with using two 1 ¼ inch screws per piece. Step 16 Make the deep side panels Make the deep side panels form three pieces of the 35 ¾ inch lengths of 1 by 6. Page 17 of 24

18 Step 17 Make the smaller side panels Make the deep side panels form three pieces of the 35 ¾ inch lengths of 1 by 6. On the side to be used as the back drill pocket holes on the ends in the locations marked on diagram below. I also put one in the middle of the board but take care to avoid the pocket hole screw joining the two pieces together Page 18 of 24

Make sure that the piece of 2 by 4 is flush with the panels on the side that will be the INSIDE and that the

19 Step 18 Make the full side panels Join one of the small and large side panels together with the 20 inch length of 2 by 4 as shown. Make sure that the piece of 2 by 4 is flush with the panels on the side that will be the INSIDE and that the pocket holes are all on the INSIDE as well. Step 19 Add the slat supports Add the 75 inch lengths of 1 ½ by 1 ½ wide pieces for the slat supports as shown Page 19 of 24

20 Step 20 Add the Headboard Slat Supports Add the two pieces of 1 by 3 for the slat support to the headboard. Make sure that the 1 ½ inch gap between them is in the center an use a scrap piece of 2 by 4 to make sure the gap is big enough Step 21 Stain or Paint I painted each of the pieces separately at this point before joining them together. Sand well and fill any holes and sand smooth again before staining or painting. Page 20 of 24

21 Step 22 Fix the frame together Fix the frame together ensuring that there is at least a 39inch gap between the side pieces. I allowed 40 to give a bit of room on each side (hence the length of the pieces added in step 19) Page 21 of 24

22 Step 23 Add the center support Add the 75 inch long piece of 2 by 4 as the center support. I drilled pocket holes on each side of the ends so that there are 4 screws holding each end in place. Remember you are fixing it to a piece that is ¾ inches long and so should drill pocket holes for ¾ inch material. Page 22 of 24

23 Step 24 Add the slats Add the 1 by 4 pieces for the slats. I added 13 and made sure they were equally spaced. I screwed the slats to the center and side supports using 1 ¼ inch screws so they didn t move Page 23 of 24
