1 The Russian Villages They Called Home The table in this section, is a compilation of 595 known Mennonite villages in Russia incorporating information from many sources. It was made from a list of 446 villages from the Deutsches Ausland Institut (DAI) documents as a base incorporates information about additional villages from other sources such as the Mennonite Historical Atlas. The villages are arranged by colony. The villages of the four original mother colonies appear first in the table (Chortitza, Molotschna, Am Trakt, and Alt-Samara Colonies). These are followed by the various daughter colonies arranged chronologically by the year the daughter colonies were first established. At the end of the table are two small sections for Mennonite villages in Volhynia and for Hutterite villages. Swiss Mennonite village names are not included. Essentially all of these villages were established before World War II. Columns in the table provide the following types of information about each village if it is known: 1. The most common name (or names) for the village, which in most cases is the original German name for the village. Variant spellings are given in parentheses. The specific number for each village in the colony is given if this available. 2. The Russian name (or names) for the village. Variant spellings are given in parentheses. 3. The year the village was founded. These are in some cases estimates and may not be entirely correct. 4. The district and province in Russia where the village was located. 5. The name of the colony the village was located in. 6. The name of the mother colony from which the settlers in that village came. 7. Various sources that provide additional details about that village. In some cases additional information may be found about certain villages in the Mennonite Historical Atlas even though that it isn't listed as one of the sources. NOTE For this genealogy, only the colony of Molotschna is included. Appendix Page 1 of 9
