6 PLEASE COMPLETE AND RETURN NOMINATION(S) BY MAY 6, 2016 BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Alberta Ukraine Genealogical Project was established with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Province of Alberta and the Lviv Oblast state administration in September of 2005 and former Premier Ralph Klein s subsequent trip to Ukraine in June Part of the impetus for creating this project was the establishment of a recognition program at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village in 2003, which honours individuals who settled in east central Alberta prior to the First World War. In 2005, the recognition program was expanded to include a permanent monument. The success of the Centennial Pioneer Recognition Program resulted in an obvious growth in popularity and awareness of local and family history research. This increase in queries from Albertans and Ukrainians who were interested in learning their preemigration family history identified a need to streamline, simplify and enhance access to resources in Alberta and in Ukraine. The Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project now makes it possible for Albertans and Ukrainians to research their family histories, and even find lost relatives, in both Canada and Ukraine. Thus far, the Project has undertaken four major initiatives, primarily focused on making public and archival records more readily available to its stakeholders and retrievable in more user-friendly formats: 1. Development of new Print and Digital Finding Aids 2. Centenary Pioneer Recognition Program 3. Reference and Research Services in Alberta and Ukraine 4. Documentation of Church Properties in Rural Communities of Alberta The project continues to develop thanks to a very strong level of community support moral, financial, and promotional. Page 6/11

7 Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project Research Hints The Centenary Pioneer Recognition Program recommends the following resources for applicants to use in locating historical documents and information to include with their submission. Applicants are strongly encouraged to locate and attach, at minimum, a copy of the ancestor s application for homestead, including the entry document. This document verifies the pioneer family s location and exact date of settlement in east central Alberta, and is the primary document used by the Centenary Program office to confirm a family s eligibility in this program. While applicants are encouraged to obtain their own historical documents and information, those individuals who do not wish, or are unable, to locate homestead records and/or census records may contact the Alberta Genealogical Research Office for research assistance (a cost-recovery fee is in effect for these research services). For more information, please AB-Ukraine.Genealogy@gov.ab.ca. 1. Application for Homestead and Homestead Patent Records Alberta s homestead files (PAA ) are available to view/copy at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. The ancestor s surname spelling (as recorded in the early 20 th century) and/or the homestead legal land description may be used to identify the homestead file number and reel. Those who wish to identify the file number in advance of visiting the Provincial Archives of Alberta may call our office for this information, or consult our finding aid whenever we offer displays at public festivals. Some of these homestead records are now available online. See Please contact our office for additional information. *Please note that land title records are separate documents from homestead records, and will not be accepted by the Centenary Program office to satisfy the program s eligibility criteria. 2. Census of Canada records (1901, 1906, 1911, 1916, 1921) Canadian census records are available to view online at the Library and Archives Canada website: Family entries in the ( and 1916 ( census records are available at Census of Canada records may be used to determine the family s year of immigration to Canada, and to confirm the date and place/ country for each member of the family. It is recommended to search this site using the attached 1906, 1911, 1916, and 1921 finding aids to narrow the scope of search. Digitized versions of the original census records and limited searches by surname may be found on 3. Ship Manifests/ Ship Passenger Lists Ship passenger lists can be found on Library and Archives Canada website under Passenger Lists, These records may be used to confirm the family s year of immigration to Canada. Searching these records can be challenging, even if the exact date of arrival and ship name is known. 4. Family History Entries in Local History Books Local history books were collaborative projects within a community, documenting community (schools, churches, institutions) and individual family histories. Local history books may be found in the local community s library and/or museum and at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Alternatively, you could contact our office. 5. Birth/ Baptismal/ Marriage Certificates and Passport Records A limited number of proof of age documents have been deposited at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. Similarly, limited numbers of church records may be available in local church record depositories. Please contact the Alberta Genealogical Research Office for more information. NOTE: MOST OF THE ABOVE MATERIAL CAN BE ACCESSED FROM OUR WEBSITE.
