2 Class 1 was a quick start guide to indexing written vital records so they are accessible to researchers online. Class 2 (this class) is a quick start guide for FamilySearch Family Tree. It covers skills all users need, including: 1. Get a user name and password 2. Orientation to the Person Page 3. Connect your ancestor to existing data

3 Part 1: Get a password In the upper right hand corner of the screen, see and click on: Write your user name and password down. Keep it in your wallet or purse. NOTE: If you are LDS, your password for LDS.org and the church distribution center works here, too.

5 Part 2: The Person Page Get there from the basic navigation ribbon Go to a person page through your pedigree chart, or by searching by name or ID # Class 4 Class 6 Class 1 Class 7

8 Person as Adult Same Person as Child The Person Page: Family Members Section Black boldface type identifies the person whose page you re on

9 The Person Page: Sources Section Click the title to see a typed extraction or go to the record (if attached) Sources are added to this section when you attach them to the Person. Can also be typed in by you, or attached from a Source Box. More in Class 6.

10 The Person Page: Search for Records Section From here, we often search for records to verify the person s family relationships. See Class 6. Search any of these databases to which you have subscribed.

11 The Person Page: Printed Forms Section Print a family group sheet one marriage at a time. One way to back up or share data for your closest ancestors with source records.

12 The Person Page: Latest Changes & Possible Duplicates Sections Yes, Family Tree tracks every change made to a Person Page. Search for and consider merging two possibly duplicate people. See Class 5.

13 Part 3: Connect to Existing Data In Family Tree we add our closest deceased ancestors to data already entered by other researchers.

14 Find my closest deceased ancestor already in Family Tree Either Or Search for your closest deceased ancestors, starting with your grandfathers. Advantage: less chance of adding duplicates of people already in Family Tree. Disadvantage: need to check for each of your ancestral lines. Note: may still discover duplicate people later. Add your closest deceased ancestors, one at a time. Carefully check for duplicates after each addition, and merge them. Recommended for recent immigrants from other nations. Disadvantage: you may not yet be trained in finding and merging duplicate people.

18 Write down the ancestor s name and Person ID Number as listed in Family Tree. Person ID Repeat the process until you have found your closest deceased ancestor listed in Family Tree for each of your remaining family lines.
