11 Methodology The Conventional Approach to feeder bus planning Case Analysis takes into consideration over 15 routes and their characteristics from Mumbai s feeder system. These are documented and analysed to understand how feeders were conventionally designed. Data sets relating to fares, operations, fleet size, route lengths, ridership, ticket sales and travel times facilitate the case analysis. Studying challenges and discussing how cities address them. Emerging trends as seen in cities like Bangalore, Indore, and Ahmedabad indicate how cities approach feeder design. Conclusion and way forward

12 Traditional Approach to Feeder Design the provision of transport services between residential areas and train stations, where further connections to a place of employment is typically undertaken. a growing urban population and expanding cityscape resulted in residential zones being created further away from the local train stop ad-hoc planning lead to feeder services being replicated, lengthened and urgently created to enable transit to cover more areas,

29 Planning a Feeder Bus System Estimate the level of demand: data collection will assist in determining the characteristics of the route Assess the site and physical conditions of the site to understand congestion levels, roadway geometry, capacity aspects, etc. Work with the constraints: final consideration to ensure optimal solutions; common constraints include turnaround space, trunkfeeder integration space, proximity to depots, lack of resources

Coordination between the many entities and agencies that manage the system, Revenue Sharing: managing revenue and implementing a cohesive approach to building a shared vision for fare and ticketing integration and revenue sharing between agencies

34 Conclusion feeder bus system design must be incorporated into the planning phase, attracting ridership through high frequencies, easy visibility and access to feeder, and significant coverage huge investments in developing Metros, Monorails, BRTS, a key component for successful implementation of these projects is multimodal integration and providing last mile connectivity through feeder bus systems Bus priority lanes at station area will improve the operational efficiency of feeder system feeder bus systems enhance coverage and operational efficiency and should not be an afterthought
