2 THE DUKE OF GLOUCESTER AWARD 2015 Introduction The Worshipful Company of Masons introduced an Award in 2007 in honour of HRH The Duke of Gloucester, who has been a liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Masons since 1975 and an honorary member of its Court since The Duke, through his architectural background, has a keen interest in the construction industry, our national heritage and in the training of craftsman in the industry. The Award was for qualified masons with the aim of encouraging high standards in all aspects of the craft of stonemasonry. The award for excellence in stonemasonry is supported jointly by the Masons Company and Stone Federation Great Britain. The two organisations have come together in a shared belief in the development of high standards in the craft of stonemasonry. The Worshipful Company of Masons The Masons Company is one of the City of London s oldest livery companies with records dating back to It was formed to safeguard the welfare of its members and to regulate the craft of stonemasonry, so that standards could be properly maintained. Today the Masons Company is active in the support of the craft by sponsoring students and apprentices in approved courses in masonry and stone carving. The Company is keen to foster, encourage and reward stonemasons in the early years of their development. Stone Federation Great Britain Stone Federation is the trade association for the natural stone industry. The Federation co-ordinates all aspects of the industry and provides specifiers and users with a first point of contact for information, advice and guidance in sourcing an appropriate material and a reliable service. Stone Federation represents employers, and liaises with government on: legal affairs, health and safety, technical standards, craftsmanship, training and education. The Federation s objectives are to promote the use of natural stone as a building material in preference to other building materials and to promote and maintain the traditional skills involved in the use of natural stone 2 of 8

3 THE DUKE OF GLOUCESTER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN STONEMASONRY 1. Nature of the Award This Award, which is supported jointly by the Masons Company and Stone Federation Great Britain, is for a stonemason with between two and nine years postqualification experience, who has shown high standards in all aspects of stonemasonry and has a portfolio of projects which illustrates his or her work. 2. Eligibilty The mason will be someone who has gone through a recognised apprenticeship for their craft achieving City & Guilds Craft and advanced or NVQ3 at an approved college. The Craftsman or woman will have had at least two years experience in their craft after qualification, be working in the United Kingdom and be an employee or self-employed. Applicants should have; Experience in both site and shop work; An ability to work with and interpret drawings, producing templates and setting out on both new build and refurbishment projects; A portfolio of projects supported with testimonies from employers and/or architects, surveyors, local authorities etc. Nominations can be made by individuals, their employer or professionals with whom they have worked. 3. Assessors The Assessors will be drawn from Stone Federation Great Britain and members of The Worshipful Company of Masons, themselves qualified in the craft of masonry or who work closely with the craft in their professional life. 4. Assessors Brief The Assessors will, in making an award, consider in particular the quality of craftsmanship and design which reflects an understanding of the materials used and the overall merit of the work submitted. The Assessors will make their initial judgement from photographs and subsequently will conduct interviews with short-listed individuals. 3 of 8

4 5. Entries Sufficient information must be submitted on the application form and supplemented by photographs (which can be submitted digitally or in hard copy) showing examples of work. The application should be supported by an entry form which must contain details of the mason s employment history and the projects submitted in support. It is important to date the projects. The Assessors may, at their discretion, withhold awards if entries are considered of insufficient standard. 6. Awards The award will be given at the discretion of the Assessors. The Assessors decision is final. Neither they nor The Worshipful Company of Masons or Stone Federation Great Britain will enter into any discussion regarding their decisions. The awards will consist of a prize to the value of 750 to be used in the furtherance of the winner s career. Each shortlisted candidate will be asked by their assessor how the prize will be spent (further training, tools, travel etc). The Masons Company may also invite qualified individuals to be nominated as Yeoman Masons of the Company. Presentation of the awards will take place at a special ceremony in the City of London during early October and be in the presence of HRH The Duke of Gloucester. 7. Entry Fee Entry is free 8.
