The name Inai Inai Ba, [pronounced: eenigh, ee-nigh, bah] which roughly translates to peekaboo in English, is a nod to Sato s Japanese heritage. While the designs reflect a simple sophistication of traditional Japanese aesthetics, modern fabrication techniques are utilized to create his simple and sturdy pieces. The fine folks of Kindred approached Mas Sato Designs to create a set of warm, organic and unobtrusive display fixture for the artisans. With cost being a driving force, the solution was to create one type of display that was mutable enough to accomodate the various artisans. Additionally, the parts of this wall hung fixture were sized to come out of a single 4x8 sheet of pre-finished maple plywood. The bottom shelf also houses a clothes rod for apparel artisans to display their wares. The end result was a restrained but functional piece that allowed the indivual craft items to pop.

10 ON THE BENCH works in progress Everyone needs more storage. Mas Sato Designs set out to reboot the ever-useful milk crate to create a modular storage unit that can be configured to the users need. Mortise and tennon joints, rounded corners and baltic birch plywood were used for durability and a modern look. Subtle tweaks were made so that sides lock into one another when stacked as a cubby system. These boxes will be the building blocks of a modular system that can be reconfigured as a desk, a storage unit or media unit.

This drawer/shelving unit is ideal for storing and displaying toys while concealing smaller items in the drawers.

This drawer/shelving unit is ideal for storing and displaying toys while concealing smaller items in the drawers. As the child grows, the piece can be used as a bookcase or media unit. This piece is made ready to assemble by the user and can ship flat with the exception of the drawer boxes which can ship separately in a small box.

12 ABOUT Mas Sato was born in Flushing, Queens to Japanese immigrants. Growing up in the NYC metro area, Sato was surrounded by both the urban artistic influences of the city and his father s interior architecture work within the Japanese community. In search of a profession that made use of his aesthetic sensibilities and attention to mathematical detail, Sato did stints in graphic design and architectural drafting after graduating from Duke University in Yearning for something more hands on, he found his calling in furniture design and craftsmanship. A father of two and inspired by their play and imagination, Sato felt a strong desire to build them high-quality modern furniture that was also super functional. What started as a project for his own family grew into a business that helps children to create, imagine and be independent. In 2009, Sato founded Inai Inai Ba! Modern Children s Furniture and has been selling his piece across the U.S. and internationally. While his designs reflect the simple sophistication of traditional Japanese aesthetics, Sato utilizes modern fabrication techniques to create simple and sturdy pieces. Sato lives in Durham, NC with his wife Jeannine, two kids Hana (5) and Kenji (2), and cat Sophie.
