1 Slater s Northern Directory 'NEWCHURCH, RAWTENSTALL, ROSSENDALE AND NEIGHBOURS Newcurch in Rossendale is a very populous chapelry in the parish of Whalley, 20 miles n. from Manchester, 14 miles s. from Colne, 9 n.n.w. from Rochdale, 8 s. from Burnley and 3 1/2 s,e. from Haslingden. It is said to have obtained its name from the original church then called 'New Church', and the houses which were soon rose around it forming the town - this has not much changed in aspect, as but few modern residences have been erected to contribute towards its ornament. The commercial establishments are numerous and extensive, and furnish employment to a great number of hands in the spinning of cotton and worsted, and manufacturing fabrics from these materials - especially blockings, baizes, and other coarse woollen goods. The river Irwell passes through the valley, and on its banks are several mills, chiefly for the production or the articles before mentioned. Coal is wrought in the neighbourhood, as are also numerous quantities of free-stone. The church, originally erected in the early part of the sixteenth century, was rebuilt in 1825, and consecrated in September, The living is a perpetual curacy, in the gift of the vicar of Whalley - the Rev. Edward Barrow is the present incumbent. There are chapels for dissenters and a free grammar school founded about the year 1701, and endowed by Mr John Kewshaw of Wolfenden. Fairs are held on the 29th of April for cattle and on the first Monday after Midsummer day for cattle, pigs, articles of clothing and pedlery. Newchurch, which comprises the districts or townships of Bacup, Deadwin Clough, Tunsted and Wolfended, contained, in 1831, 9,196 iihabitants and in 1841, 11,668. Rawtenstall is a rapidly improving village, partly in the township of Newchurch and partly in that of Lower Booths, about 21/2 miles e. by s. of Haslingden, on the line of the East Lancashire Railway. The manufacturing establishments here and in the neighbourhood, as before stated, of Newchurch, are various and extensive - those of Messers Hoyle, Ashworth & Co, Mr J R Kay, Mr R Ashworth, Messers Whitehead & Brothers, Mr J Stott and others, are on a large scale, and employ a great number of hands. A very beautiful church has recently been erected here, and endowed by the munificence of Henry Hoyle Esq, of Newhall Hey, and there are schools in connexion with the church, which, with another called the "Holly Mount School", established by Messers Whitehead and Brothers for the education of the factory children, have conferred incalculable benefits upon the increasing population of this village. The last named school, which cost #2,600, is surmounted by a tower, with a clock and is really an ornamental building. The Weslyan chapel here exhibits great elegance in its design, and the decorations and fittings of the interior, which is furnished with a fine-toned organ, are in the best taste, and might serve as a model for similar temples of worship. In the Sunday school connected with this establishment, nearly seven hundred pupils receive instruction. Great interest seems to be evinced in this district by the manufacturers and other spirited individuals for the moral and intellectual improvement of the adult as well as the juvenile population, by the establishment of schools, a mechanics' institute, and a savings' bank. A fair is held 21st June. The population, which is very considerable, is returned with Newchurch and Lower Booth.

2 ROSSENDALE FOREST or Chase, is a large district in the southern part of the hundred of Blackburn. It was anciently spelled Rosendale, and previous to being disforested (which, by tradition, began to take place about the reign of Henry VII) was thickly studded with large forest trees, interspersed with rose bushes, from which it is supposed to have derived its name. It is recorded that "the forest trees grew so near to each other, that squirrel might easily leap from one to another without alighting on the ground, from Newhall Hey to Sharny-ford, being a distance of four miles". The present appearance of the country is very romantic, and, during summer, affords many beautiful and extensive views from the mountains, with which it abounds; and many springs of water which run out of the valleys and hills, impart additional interest to the scenery. this district is very healthy and the air, though keen at some periods of the year, is salubrious, and the inhabitants are remarked for their longevity.
