(see Joseph Hindley ( ). GBBBBGBGGBGGGB Mary was the 12 th child out of 14, eleven of whom survived to adulthood. She was baptised at the Parish Church of Great Budworth (St Mary and All Saints) on 4 th February 1849.
2 MARY HINDLEY ( ) 1848MARY/2 Mary s Baptism was recorded on 4 th February 1849 at Great Budworth Church. Mary s early years were spent in, with her parents at Reed House Cottage. In the 1861 Census she was at Reed House Cottage, aged 12, but no job was mentioned was the year of her marriage to Plumb, Wheelwright, on 23 rd January at St Mark s Church,. Plumb was baptised on 31 st May 1841 at Great Budworth. His parents were Samuel (small farmer) and Elizabeth Plumb of. The Intension to Marry Oath is on page 3 and the Church marriage entry is on page 4. At the time of the 1871 Census and Mary had two children, and they were living at the Fogg s Farm Cottage, Whitley. was a wheelwright employing three boys. One of the apprentices was Walter Oakes, son of Margaret Hindley (Mary s oldest sister). By the time of the 1881 Census they were still at Fogg s Farm Cottage and had four children living with them. There was another daughter, Amy Elizabeth, who was born in 1875 but she died at birth. The 1891 Census, records them at Northwich Road, Whitley Superior, which is close to where they were actually living at Fogg s Farm Cottage. is still a wheelwright. At this time their son, aged 14, was living with them and he was an apprentice wheelwright. (The Cottage and s workshop were still there in 2013.) appears in the Electoral registers of He is in the Whitley Polling District for the years , qualifying as Dwelling House, near the Birch and Bottle. retired from being a wheelwright before the 1901 Census and the couple moved into 35 Chapel Lane, Stockton Heath. During the 1901 Census and Mary were visiting their daughter, Frances Louise and her husband, (Landlord) Edwin Morley, at the Wagon and Horses Inn, Cambridgeshire. The 1911 Census tells us that the couple were still at at 35 Chapel Lane, Stockton Heath. was 69 and Mary 62. died on 14 th June After s death Mary returned to to live with Jane Plumb. When Jane died in 1930 Mary moved to The Wheatsheaf Public House,, where her son,, was the Landlord. Mary died at The Wheatsheaf on 21 st March 1933 and was buried at St. Mark s Church,.
3 MARY HINDLEY ( ) 1848MARY/3
4 MARY HINDLEY ( ) 1848MARY/4 s father, Samuel Plumb, was a tenant small farmer, 10acres or so, and Cow Jobber (Dealer). Memories. In the early 1900s, and after had retired, he and Mary were living at 35 Chapel Lane, Stockton Heath. June Harrison, a great granddaughter, printed the following tales in It was here that their grandchildren, by their son, used to visit them. According to my father, they walked all the way from to Stockton Heath just for a bit of fried bread. This, of course, is the story he used to tell my sister and when he was trying to instil in us how lucky we were and that we shouldn t waste good food. My mother always said that he was exaggerating, and that in fact his mother was one of the best cooks in the County, and there were always hams smoking in the chimney breast, etc. etc. In fact many, many years later when we took my octogenarian father to visit his older sister, they were reminiscing about how they loved going to visit their grandparents, and didn t really mind the long walk, especially as grandma always used to make them the most delicious fried bread, which was something their mother didn t cook for them. After s death in 1914 Mary returned to where she lived at Aaron s Cottage, with Jane Plumb, who was the widow of Mark Plumb. (Mark was one of the sons of Peter and Eunice whose exact relationship to the rest of the Plumbs of has not so far been established.) Mark s sister Hannah was, however, married to Matthew Plumb who was s half brother, so a relationship had been established by the younger generations. In any case, Jane and Mary may well have been friends regardless of their family connections. Jane died in 1930, and then Mary moved again, to live at The Wheatsheaf with her son and family. She died 3 years later, and was greatly loved by all her grandchildren. My father was very sad that he missed her funeral as he was working in Norfolk at the time of her death, and by the time the letter telling him finally caught up with him it was too late for him to make the long journey back to. Geoffrey Williams, a grandson of Jonas, Mary s sister, says that he saw Great Aunt Mary Plumb many times, and found her a delightful old lady with a great sense of humour. Mary was greatly loved by all her grandchildren.
