1 Geneva CUSD 304 Content-Area Curriculum Frameworks Grades 6-12 Family and Consumer Science Mission Statement Mission Statement FCS 2007 The relationship between work and family is our unique focus. The mission of Geneva Community Unit School District # Family and Consumer Science curriculum is to guide students toward the development of independent living skills and awareness of career/employment potential. Family and Consumer Science Education empower individuals and families across the lifespan to manage the challenges of living and working in a diverse, global society.. Course Sequence (Grades 6-12) Grade 7 Exploratory semester course designed to introduce students to develop basic skills in food preparation and sewing Grade 8 Semester course designed to increase student s life skills and promote self-sufficiency in the area of foods and nutrition as well as basic clothing construction
2 Course Framework Course Title Grade Level Semesters ( ) Prerequisite Course Description Family and Consumer Science 7 One semester none Foods One Quarter: The foods unit will provide the students with a basic knowledge of kitchen and food safety, basic preparation techniques, table setting, manners, and etiquette. Emphasis is also placed on nutritional education, enabling students to make independent food choices for a healthy lifestyle. The lab experiences are designed to reinforce team planning, a cooperative work environment, time management, and critical thinking skills. Sewing One Quarter: The sewing unit introduces the basic skills of hand and machine sewing. Projects are selected to allow students to express their own creativity, while mastering fundamental sewing skills. This opportunity offers a daily hands-on, independent learning experience, which encourages students to assess their work habits and individual progress while learning basic sewing techniques. The projects also challenge students to implement a variety of learning modalities unique to this exploratory setting. District-approved Materials and/or Resources October 2012 Page 2 of 6

4 Unit 2 Hand Sewing Techniques Unit 2- Hand sewing techniques Assessment Frameworks, or other standards that will be taught in this unit 16.2 Evaluate fiber and textiles materials o I can demonstrate the ability to use hand sewing for construction and repair. o I can sew a button by hand sewing with needle and thread.
