2 Career Tech Fundamentals of Interior Design: This course introduces the student to the basic fundamentals of design and the interior design profession. The skills taught throughout the course will allow the student to investigate and explore the various careers within the aspects of interior design. Students will gain knowledge of the history of interior furnishings. Basic mathematics, English language arts and science skills will be incorporated throughout the curriculum. Individual work, teamwork and presentation skills will also be incorporated into the curriculum. Upon completion of the interior design curriculum, students will have acquired the basic skills that will allow them to make a well-educated move to the post-secondary level. One of three courses in the Interior & Fashion Design Career Pathway Fundamentals of Fashion: The Fundamentals of Fashion course introduces the students to the fascinating world of how textiles are woven into the fabric of everyday life. This course is designed to advance student skills in the selection, purchase, design, care, and construction of textile products. One of three courses in the Interior & Fashion Design Career Pathway Textile Science: Introduces students to the fascinating world of fabrics, fibers, dyes, and fabric construction. (One of three courses within the Interior and Fashion Design Career Pathway.) Intro to Business and Technology: Introduction course to the world of business and personal finance. Students will have the opportunity to explore marketing, management, accounting, risk management, business law, economics, communication, and leadership. Business Essentials will also cover practical ways to earn more money and keep more of what you make by discussing budgeting, investing, financial planning, loans, insurance, and estate planning. (First course in the Accounting Career Pathway, Small Business Development Career Pathway & Financial Mgmt Services Career Pathway) Financial Literacy (Money and Me): This course is specifically designed for high school students to understand the importance of the financial world, including planning and managing money wisely. Areas of study taught through application in personal finance include sources of income, budgeting, banking, consumer credit, credit laws and rights, personal bankruptcy, insurance, spending, taxes, investment strategies, savings accounts, mutual funds and the stock market, buying a vehicle, and living independently. Prerequisite: Intro to Business and Technology Magnet Intro to Digital Technology: Course provides all students an introduction to the principles of computer science and its place in the modern world. It helps students to use computers effectives in their lives. Student can acquire a fundamental understanding of the operations of computers and computer networks and create useful programs implementing simple algorithms. (First course in the following pathway: Computing Career Pathway, Interactive Media Career Pathway,Computer Systems & Support Career Pathway). Special enriched course required for magnet students in 9 th or 10 th grade. Digital Design: Using web design as the platform for product design and presentation, students will create and learn digital media applications using elements of text, graphics, animation, sound, video and digital imaging for various format. The digital media and interactive media rojects developed and published showcase the student skills and ability. Emphasis will be placed on effective use of tools for interactive multimedia production including storyboarding, visual development, project management, digital citizenship, and web processes. Students will create and design web sites that incorporate digital media elements to enhance content of web site. (This is the second course within the Interactive Media Career Pathway.) Prerequisite: Intro to Digital Technology Information Technology Essentials: Provides students with the skills necessary to diagnose and correct problems that computer users encounter. Students will obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to install, build, upgrade, repair, configure, troubleshoot & perform preventative maintenance on personal computer hardware & operating systems. Hands-on experience in installing, maintaining & troubleshooting computer hardware & software. First course in the Computer Networking & second course in the Computer Systems & Support Career Pathways. Prerequisite: Intro to Digital Technology Intro to Engineering, Drawing & Design: Introductory course and a prerequisite to all other Engineering Design and Drawing courses. Emphasis is placed on safety, correct use of tools and equipment, drafting media, sketching, lettering, fundamentals of CAD and multi-view drawings. (This is the first course for both the Engineering Graphics and Design Pathway and the Architectural Drawing and Design Pathway.)
3 Survey of Engineering Graphics: Develops skills in dimensioning, tolerancing, pictorials, sections, auxiliary views, and intersection and developments. CAD tools and software are used extensively throughout this course. (This is the second course within the Engineering Graphics and Design Pathway.) Prerequisite: Intro to Engineering Drawing & Design Intro to Graphics and Design: This course is designed as the foundational course for both the graphics Production and Graphics Design pathways. It provides students with the processes involved in the technologies of printing, publishing, packaging, electronic imaging, and their allied industries. Intro to Law & Public Safety: Introductory course that covers the various agencies and professions in law enforcement, private security, corrections, fire, and emergency management services by examining governmental structure, citizenship rights/duties, and the criminal justice system. (This is the first course within the Law and Justice Career Pathway.) Marketing Principles: Marketing Principles is the foundational course for the Marketing and Management, Fashion Merchandising and Buying, and Marketing Communications and Promotion Pathways. Marketing Principles addresses all the ways in which marketing satisfies consumer and business needs and wants for products and services. Intro to Sports and Entertainment Marketing: Intro to Sports and Entertainment Marketing introduces the student to the marketing and management function and tasks that can be applied in amateur or professional sports or sporting events, entertainment or entertainment events, selling or renting supplies and equipment used for recreational or sporting purposes, product and services related to hobbies or cultural events, or business primarily engaged in satisfying the desire to make productive or enjoyable use of leisure time. Prerequisite: Marketing Principles NJROTC I: Includes the study of naval heritage, organization, sea power and naval history from colonial times to the 1850s, the study of naval ship missions and organization, an introduction to navigation and maritime geography, basic seamanship including rig and shipboard watch procedures, military drill with rifles, and physical development. Navy leadership principles will be applied to drills and unit organizational duties. An introduction to naval physical fitness and related health topics are covered. Other unit topics include a study of officer and enlisted programs, military drill, commands, and ceremonies. (This is the first course within the Navy Career Pathway.) NJROTC II: Includes the study of nautical plotting, rules and regulations, and aids to navigation, as well as the study of American maritime history from 1860 to the end of World War I. It also introduces students to the organization used to conduct various operations and basic naval communications. Other topics covered include naval career planning, leadership development, oceanography, physical development, military drills, commands, the study of naval intelligence and national security, shipboard evaluations, health and first aid, physical fitness, and military drill and ceremonies. (This is the second course within the Navy Career Pathway.) Occupational Safety and Fundamentals: The first course in the construction core curriculum that encompasses the basics and fundamentals of common skills spanning a variety of construction occupations. These basic skills include safety, mathematics, hand tools, power tools, blueprint reading, and basic rigging. Minimum performance requirements are based on the student successfully completing the modules according to the National Center Construction Education Research (NCCER) Occupational Standards. (This is the first course for all the Construction Technology Program Pathways 1) Carpentry, 2) Electrical, 3) Masonry, and 4) Plumbing.) Intro to Construction: Acquaints students with the four major technical occupations that are available in the building industry (carpentry, electrical, masonry, and plumbing). The various activities equip students with the skills needed to select a building construction occupation. (This is the second course for all Construction Technology Program Pathways.) Prerequisite: Occupational Safety and Fundamentals Physical Education Health: Provides a direct and factual approach to health education that is practical, personal, and positive Health topics include safety, drug education, nutrition, personal health, growth and development building self-esteem and relationship skills. By acquiring the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to a healthful life, students learn to take responsibilities for their own health. These are two ½ credit two courses combined in one semester. Fit them in whenever you can. BPE: Designed to help students understand why exercise and fitness are important in developing a healthy and active lifestyle. The course will emphasize successful strategies for maintaining good cardiovascular endurance,
4 flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance and body composition. It will follow a conceptual approach dealing with the following topics: the nature of fitness, assessing individual fitness, developing and maintaining a life-long fitness program, and developing an appreciation for efficient movement by viewing it as both an art and a science. Fitness progress and assessments will be made utilizing POLAR Heart Rate Monitor technology to determine cardiovascular fitness levels and their relation to the individuals target heart rate zone. Body Sculpting: Designed to redefine the shape of the female body through specific exercises in order to attain desired body image through weight training, conditioning exercises and proper nutrition. This course offers students the knowledge and skills necessary to reach their physical goal and improve their appearance and self-concept. Advanced Body Sculpting: Designed to redefine the shape of the female body through specific exercises in order to attain desired body image through weight training, conditioning exercises and proper nutrition. This course offers students the knowledge and skills necessary to reach their physical goal and improve their appearance and selfconcept. General PE: Focuses on and enhances skills in any combination or variety of Team sports, lifetime sports, track and field events, outdoor education experiences, rhythmic/dance, recreational games, gymnastics, and self-defense. It further promotes methods to attain a healthy and active lifestyle. Physical Conditioning: For male athletes only. Team Sports: Designed to introduce students to three different team sports, with no one sport less than 4 weeks or longer than 8 weeks. Those from which the selection is made include the following: basketball, gym hockey, soccer, speedball, flag football, ultimate Frisbee, team handball, softball, and volleyball. Others may be substituted depending upon facilities and equipment. Weight Training: Designed to introduce male students to a weight-training program that will promote over-all body fitness. The student will be exposed to different types of weight equipment and methods of training with weights. The student will also gain knowledge of the different types of exercises, correct techniques of executing the various exercises, proper breathing, and the safety factors involved in spotting. Band: Level determined by audition Fine Arts Chorus: Level determined by audition Orchestra: Level determined by audition Comprehensive Art: Introduces art history, criticism & studio production. It emphasizes the ability to understand & use the elements of art & principles of design through a variety of media processes and visual resources. (Prerequisite for all other art courses) Ceramics/Pottery 1: Introduces the characteristics of clay and design using various techniques of construction & surface treatments. Studio processes are emphasized and students are involved in firing & presenting their clay work. Prerequisite: Comprehensive Art Drawing & Painting I: Introduces drawing & painting techniques and a variety of drawing & painting media. Emphasizes development of drawing & painting skills and utilizes problem solving skills to achieve desired results. Prerequisite: Comprehensive Art Fundamentals of Theatre I: Serves as prerequisite for other theatre/drama courses. Develops and applies performance skills through basic vocal, physical and emotional exercises; includes improvisation and scene study and related technical art forms. Fundamentals of Theatre II: Enhances Fundamentals I skills. Prerequisite: Fundamentals I Technical Theatre I: Introduces technical considerations of play production; covers properties, lighting and settings, program, box office, marketing, management, make-up and costumes.
5 Technical Theatre II: Enhances level-one skills and introduces aspects of drafting, creation of lighting, sound, properties, costumes and make-up design. Offers opportunities to apply skills in these areas. Prerequisite: Tech Theatre I Modern Language (All courses are sequential.) French I: Introduction to the language and culture of France and other French-speaking countries. The course will enable the student to attain a beginner s level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on oral proficiency. French II: Designed to further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing with an emphasis on oral proficiency. The student will acquire a basic command of key vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary for limited personal communication as well as an appreciation of diversity in the French-speaking world. H French III: Designed to further develop the student s communication skills and cultural appreciation of the Frenchspeaking world. The student will be able to participate in a variety of oral and written activities. (+.5 quality pt.) Latin I: Introduction to the language and civilization of the Romans. The course is designed to develop a knowledge base composed of vocabulary, grammar, translation, derivatives, mottoes, abbreviations, quotations, life in ancient Rome and mythology. Latin II: Designed to develop reading comprehension of texts written in Latin. The course will provide additional study of grammar, vocabulary, translation, derivatives, mythology, and Roman civilization. Spanish I: Introduction to the language and culture of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. The course will enable the student to attain a beginner s level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on oral proficiency. Spanish II: Designed to further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing with an emphasis on oral proficiency. The student will acquire a basic command of key vocabulary and grammatical structures necessary for limited personal communication as well as an appreciation of diversity in the Spanish-speaking world. H Spanish III: Designed to further develop the student s communication skills and cultural appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world. Social Studies H World Geography: This course provides an overview of the physical and cultural geography. Additionally, an awareness of similarities and differences in human needs and behaviors is developed. (+.5 quality pt.) AP Human Geography: This course introduces students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth s surfaces. Students employ spatial concept and landscape analysis to analyze human social organization and its environmental consequences. Follows College Board s AP curriculum. (+1 quality pt.)
