Celebrate Globally Seven three-foot trees and the main table centerpiece have been decorated to represent the seven contents on the globe. Students from the and Hospitality Management programs selected items to represent these regions and cultures. Please enjoy the decorations which also showcase the new home of the college s Global Studies Initiative in the Hilton Mansion. Each tree and centerpiece will be auctioned off to raise funds for the CCBC Foundation. December 2013
Global Centerpiece The earth is rich with its many people, cultures, traditions, faiths, and breathtaking landscapes. In celebrating globally, we wish all the people of the world a safe and wonderful holiday season. Peace on Earth, Goodwill toward All. Centerpiece designer: Laura Kimball, Program Coordinator Etched matboard landmarks were created in the CCBC Fabrication Lab by Adam Drutz, Interior Design Association/ ASID Student Chapter President
African Continent The African tree features Adinkra symbols which are Asante tribal symbols from Ghana stained on wood, Bogolanfini also known as Mudcloth is a Malian cotton fabric dyed with fermented mud these patterns have been stained on wood, and African flags painted on wood all backed with textured animal print paper. The tree also features African mask from several regions cut out of wood in the CCBC FAB Lab and stained to add color they are also backed with animal print paper. The tree has colorful feathers, traditionally styled ornaments, and is wrapped with colorful beads as garland. The tree has a giraffe printed skirt which has been hand beaded. This tree also features ornaments made with African fabric. Last but not least the tree is topped with a gold painted Adinkra symbol made from Styrofoam. Sherrie Rashid, Tiffany L. Hughes and Shekinah Frazier Special thanks Rashid Real Estate Group. Etched wood masks were created in the CCBC Fabrication Lab by Adam Drutz
Antarctica Continent The cold most southern portion of the planet is the Antarctic continent. This tree was designed to give the feeling of the icy, snowy conditions found in Antarctica. Also featured are penguins, which are some of the few creatures who call this continent their home. Laura Barton and Zelda Gaskins
Asian Continent The Asian Continent is one of the largest in the world. Showcasing the variety of cultures found on this continent, elements represent many traditions. Umbrellas not only provide shade, but are traditional and essential wedding accessories throughout China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Laos. In some Asian cultures, coins were used (and in some cases still used) as jewelry in countries such as India, Armenia, Nepal, and Turkmenistan. Every heritage has its own meaning for the jewelry and how it was worn. Photos of historic and important structures, such as the Great Wall of China, were incorporated and hung with a string of colors from the Philippines flag (red, yellow, white, and blue) in honor of those who died in the recent natural disasters. These colors were also used as garland on the tree. Rosa Paulino-Rasuio, Patil Bozabalian, and Stacy Gratz
Australian Continent Australia is a continent comprising mainland Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea, Seram, possibly Timor, and neighboring islands. Australia is the largest country with in this region. This tree was designed to reflect the sheep and lamb industry, as Australia is one of the world's leading producers of lamb and mutton, the largest exporter of mutton and live sheep, and second largest exporter of lamb. The Australian public is among the biggest consumers of lamb in the world. Australia is also the world s leading producer of wool, which is mostly from Merino sheep. The tree ornaments were handmade to showcase both the sheep and wool yarn industries including: yarn wound matboard sheep, wooden sheep with red woolen sweaters, yarn balls, engraved sheep heard wooden plaques, red woolen knittings as garland, topped off with a curly soft yarn star. Tree designer: Laura Kimball, Program Coordinator Wound yarn balls were crafted by Rachel Tranter and the matboard and wood sheep cutouts and etched wood block sheep were created in the CCBC Fabrication Lab by Adam Drutz
European Continent Hospitality in Europe is represented by 52 ornaments, one for every European country. Each ornament depicts a tourist site for that country on one side and an indigenous cuisine item on the other. Also featured are beautiful glass ornaments to showcase some of European delights! The tree is topped with a blown glass pineapple, the symbol of hospitality. Hospitailiy Management Student Association: Jose Sanchez, Therese Bage, Marissa Truffer, Kyle Vratarich, and Scott Vratarich (Advisor) This tree was done in collaboration with the Association for the CCBC Foundation Holiday Event. Hospitality Management Student Association
North American Continent North America is the 3rd largest continent. It is bordered on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the southeast by the Caribbean Sea, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The United States, Canada, and Mexico are the most populous and economically secure countries in this region and are represented on this tree with western, cowboy style gear, given the rural and mountainous nature of the land in each of these countries. Canada is also represented with the maple leaf and Mexico with the sombrero. Smaller regions are represented in flags. Laura Fitzpatrick and Adam Drutz Etched wood masks were created in the CCBC Fabrication Lab by Adam Drutz, Interior Design Association/ ASID Student Chapter President
South American Continent Showcasing the modern day countries and the pre-columbian heritage of South America, this tree uses design elements and architectural features from the South American people. The Incan cross, snowflakes, ceremonial mask, and Machu Picchu inspired tree base reflect the indigenous people of this continent. Each modern-day country is also represented with their flag, images, native birds, and flowers. Laura Tilman, Leora Davalos, Ida Schmid, and Sheridan Rose
