This guide has been created to help you understand your fabric upholstery, so you can appreciate the quality and unique characteristics of your purchase, and the necessary care and maintenance guidelines to ensure your sofa will be with you for years to come. Upholstery Fabrics - Characteristics Upholstery fabrics are quite different to the fabrics typically used in making garments. Garment fabrics are known for their use of natural fibre yarns such as cotton, linen, silk, wool, rayon blended together, or blended with man-made synthetic fibres such as polyesters, acrylics, and nylon. Fabrics used to create beautiful upholstery must perform differently to what is expected for garments. Today s advanced upholstery fabrics primarily utilise man-made synthetic fibre yarns because they can help to: Repel grime and stains Deliver better/longer wear Be easier to clean Resist mildew and mould Feel and look like natural fibres, with greater longevity and less maintenance. 3 Fabric Performance Colour Fastness Our fabrics are tested to International Standards (ISO) for colourfastness to rubbing and light, abrasion, seam slippage and piling. Fabrics are tested in an independent laboratory and we assess those results to ensure optimal performance. Abrasion Testing All fabrics are tested for colour fastness. It is important to note that no fabric is 100% colour fast and that it is impossible to prevent colours fading if adequate precautions are not taken in the home. Winter sun, sitting lower in the sky, can cause the most damage, particularly when protective curtains have been pulled back to warm the room. The Martindale Abrasion machine tests durability of woven fabrics and the STOL Abrasion machine tests the durability of knitted fabrics. In laboratory conditions, fabric samples are continuously rubbed until the yarn is observed to fatigue. The results are a guide to the durability of the covering. Martindale Catagories LD - Light Domestic suitable only for upholstery intended for occasional, decorative or light usage. GD - General Domestic/Light Commercial Suitable for most styles of upholstery for general daily domestic use. HD - Heavy Domestic /Medium Commercial Suitable for furniture subjected to heavy domestic or medium commercial use, including motion furniture. HC Heavy Commercial Suitable for upholstery normally subjected to heavy commercial use including bar stools, tub chairs and dining chairs where the furniture is used throughout the day in commercial environments. Fading There are two common causes of fading/bleaching of upholstery fabric. UV and sun damage can cause fading, particularly in bright colours, depending on the degree of exposure. Some fabric damage will be evident where fading is most pronounced. Constant exposure to sun rays will break down fabrics, causing them to become brittle and more susceptible to breaking. Fading or bleaching can also be caused by certain types of medication taken orally or cream based applied directly to the skin. These medications can transfer to the upholstery through the skin causing a bleaching or staining effect. Known medications that can cause this effect include treatment for acne, arthritis, high blood pressure, aspirin based medication and chemotherapy treatments. Professional steam cleaning on a regular basis will help alleviate the impact. We also recommend you follow the necessary care and maintenance guidelines to ensure your sofa will be with you for years to come. 4 Oxidation Good Looks Need To Be Maintained Fumes from chimneys, auto exhausts, open fires, gas fires, stoves or whatever combustion is present, produce a mild sulphuric acid. This matter is absorbed by or clings to, the furnishing fabric and contributes to discolouration and deterioration of the fabric. Pilling Can occur occasionally as a result of normal daily wear and should not be considered as a fault. There are many variables which can trigger pilling, including climatic conditions, atmospheric purity and user environment. Even specific clothing types (fleecy tracksuits, etc) can transfer pills from the clothing to the furniture fabric. As the fabric surface is rubbed, a single or small group of loose fibres on the surface begins to twist upon itself, forming tiny balls or pills. Often the catalyst that starts this process is a foreign fibre or speck of dirt. Prior to your Bay Leather Republic product leaving the factory, it will receive a final inspection. It will then be wrapped in order to protect it and minimise movement whilst in transit. Once unpacked, fabric sofas may require dressing. This is quite normal, and very easy to perform using the following steps: Plump up the back cushions and arm pads of each sofa Ease the fabric gently into shape with the palms of your hands Spread the fabric across the seat cushions in the same way Give the sofa time to warm up and relax (this may take a few days in a warm room). Before Dressing Your Sofa Pilling can be successfully removed with battery operated pilling tools available to purchase from any haberdashery store. De-pilling only removes unsightly loose surface fibres and does not affect fabric performance. Pets After Dressing Your Sofa Bay Leather Republic strongly advises against allowing pets on furniture. Pets are a leading cause of product concerns. Pet claws can catch the weave, causing damage, along with accelerated wear, pilling and heavy soiling. 6 FABRIC CARE AND WARRANTY 7

5 How To Dress A Sofa Seating Comfort Advances in structural and seating design technologies have resulted in more durable and softer-sit comfort, whilst still maintaining the necessary body-correct support. To extend the comfort life of your cushions, avoid sitting on the edges of foam cushions as this may cause premature loss of structural shape. If your furniture features loose seat and or back cushions, regularly rotate the cushion positions, to help all seats settle and give a consistent feel across your furniture. Solid Foundation The load bearing components of Bay Leather Republic s frames are correctly engineered, custom made for each model, from various timbers and timber composites. Timber products, such as structural grade plywoods are featured, in appropriate areas according to the requirements of the design. 8 FABRIC CARE AND WARRANTY 9

6 A Quality Sofa Doesn t Wear Out, It Wears In Caring For Your Fabric Upholstery If your new Bay Leather Republic sofa feels or looks a little different to the one you saw in the store (the seat may feel firmer; the fabric may look tighter), that s because your furniture is brand new, unlike the store s floor sample which may have already been well run-in by many visitors. Like a new pair of shoes, with regular use your new furniture will also gradually begin to adapt to your expectations. An advantage to bear in mind is that a fine sofa or chair doesn t wear out, it wears in. This also means that your sofa can (and will) relax into a more casual appearance over time. When pressure is applied to the polyurethane foam for the first time, the micro cells within the foam structure break which creates a slight softening effect. This natural cellular breakdown is expected. It also means that during the first few weeks of use comfort creases and wrinkles will form naturally. Correct care will extend your furniture s life and value. Various factors determine the life expectancy of your fabric, for example colour, weight and fibre content. Due to so many variables, some fabrics may require specific, specialised cleaning solutions or procedures. Hence it is impossible to provide a single cleaning code for all fabrics. Your furniture should have a Fabric Care Label affixed to or accompanying the furniture. If in doubt, you can also consult one of our furniture sales specialists. We highly recommend purchasing a Fabric Care Kit with your sofa purchase. This will provide you with the correct products in order to care for your fabric sofa. But remember, these fabric care products are for spot cleaning only. You must closely follow the individual usage directions for each product in the Care Kit. If stains persist, consult a Professional Upholstery Cleaning Service. Vacuum all surfaces, cushions and decking regularly. Accumulating dust is abrasive and will accelerate wear if regular vacuuming is not carried out. Always use an upholstery (brush) attachment. Do not vacuum feather filled cushions. 10 FABRIC CARE AND WARRANTY 11

7 Caring For Your Fabric Upholstery Caring For Your Fabric Upholstery To remove dust, brush delicately using a brush with soft bristles or use a vacuum cleaner set to the medium power output setting (using the most suitable accessory supplied with the cleaner) and taking care not to rub the accessory directly against the covering. Rotate or reverse cushions regularly when the design permits. Do this once a month to minimise wear from favourite chair syndrome, this is where more obvious soil build up on the most frequently used seat or seats. Position the sofa at least 2 meters from a heat source, such as heaters or radiators. Do not sit on edges of cushions or arms. This causes premature wear and may distort the padding under the fabric. Keep pets and sharp objects away from fabric. Fur is particularly oily and may cause permanent discolouration. Claws, belt buckles, heels, keys, etc., can cut and/or pull fabric, causing permanent damage. Do not put newspaper on the sofa as print ink from newspapers...will transfer onto upholstery cover and dirty the sofa. Discoloration on upholstery in most instances is caused through unstable dye transferring from clothes to the sofa - please be cautious, the most frequent culprit is blue jeans. Feather and down cushions have excellent recovery, but much...like down comforters or pillows, they need to be fluffed more...frequently to restore their loft. Just like down comforters and pillows, feathers can sometimes...find their way through the weave of the fabric. This is not considered a fault of the product. Tight, attached seat and back cushions will stretch and wrinkle...with use. You can easily restore their appearance by smoothing...the surface and tucking excess upholstery into the sides of the...seat or back. 8 Maintaining Your Bay Leather Republic Recliner Maintaining Your Bay Leather Republic Recliner If your new furniture includes Bay Leather Republic electric powered reclining seats: ALWAYS fully close the footrest BEFORE getting out of the furniture. Your Bay Leather Republic Electric Recliner may come with a child lock function. Lock Button Do NOT move the furniture unless the footrest is locked in the closed position. Recline Button Do NOT pull on the seat back arm or sit on the arms. Do NOT pull or sit on the open footrest, as this will damage the mechanism. When operating the mechanism, keep children or body parts clear to avoid injury. Transformers are supplied with electric power motion furniture, so ensure that power to these is fitted correctly and power cords are safely positioned. LED Indicator Users may activate/deactivate the lock button by pressing with a pen nib or a similar sharp point. To recline or retract, ensure that the protection button is deactivated. LED indicator will emit green light when the electric recliner is plugged into a power point. It will emit red light when the recliner function is activated. The indicator will not emit any light when not connected to a power supply. Always leave recliners in a closed position when not in use. As the recliners contain moving parts, slight noises will be audible when the recliner is operating. During the first couple of usages of the recliner there can be some lounder noises, these will stop with time. 14 FABRIC CARE AND WARRANTY 15

9 Spots and Spills Professional Cleaning Frequency To maintain the aesthetic appearance it is advisable to treat each stain immediately before it becomes absorbed excessively. This will avoid prolonged or abrasive treatments being required. Do not rub, carefully soak up the spillage by gently blotting with...a clean, dry, absorbent cloth. Clean the stain using a circular movement, working from the....outside towards the centre. Always take care to blot each stain... delicately. Do not use a wet cloth, rather, use a slightly damp one. Only apply the appropriate upholstery fabric cleaning and care...products suggested by your sales consultant. Do not use household detergents or strong chemicals to clean...your upholstery. Pre-test all of the care products in a hidden area to make sure...that they are compatible. Improper cleaning may void your fabric furniture warranty. How often you engage a professional upholstery cleaning service depends on how you use your furniture, your maintenance and the environment conditions. Overall, as a general guide, (restorative) cleaning is recommended every 12 months for most family room fabric furniture. In other circumstances, more frequently used furniture may need extra attention. Difficult stains should be attended to by a professional as soon as possible and not be left to the next restorative clean. For all-over cleaning (or if in doubt about spot cleaning), use only a trained professional upholstery cleaning technician. Things To Note Do not move the sofa by dragging or lifting by the armrests. Do not move the sofa by pushing or pulling it. Do not jump or throw yourself onto the sofa. Do not sit on the arms and/or the back of the sofa. The correct way to move the sofa is by lifting it from the base,...but avoid using the feet as a level to prevent breaking them. Failing to care properly for your fabric product may invalidate your Bay Leather Republic warranty. 16 FABRIC CARE AND WARRANTY 17

10 Bay Leather Republic Warranty & Consumer Guarantees Bay Leather Republic Warranty: Bay Leather provides this warranty ( Warranty ) for Bay Leather branded products that have been purchased in Australia. This Warranty is subject to the Australian Competition and Consumer Act 2010 ( Australian Consumer Law ). The benefits provided in this Warranty are in addition to other rights and remedies of a consumer under the Australian Consumer Law, and any other laws in relation to the products to which this Warranty relates. The Warranty period commences from the date of sale. The period of the Warranty will be: (a) 10 years for upholstery frames (including sofas, daybeds, chaise, armchairs and recliners, and exc luding occasional chairs, dining chairs and bar stools); (b) 2 years for furniture (including upholstery furniture coverings, foam, finishing (stitching, glue,mnails, tacks) and recliner mechanisms) and any other product which Bay Leather identifies in writing as attaching this Warranty; (c) 1 year for all other items. This Warranty covers the replacement or repair of any product that has a manufacturing or material defect that is not the result of normal wear and tear, or a natural characteristic of the material used. This Warranty is not transferable and does not cover products used for commercial purposes. Exclusions: Subject to the Australian Consumer Law, this Warranty does not apply to any non-bay Leather branded products, products that are sold as seconds, floorstock, repaired products, or products that have a defect where this has been drawn to the customer s attention before the purchase of the product. In addition, this Warranty will not apply if: (a) Repairs to a product are made or attempted by a service provider other than approved by Bay Leather. (b) The product has not been used or maintained in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions as provided with the product. (c) The customer uses the product in an abnormal manner for example if the product is abused, misused, dropped, crushed, impacted with any hard surface, exposed to extreme heat (including fire) or cold, not maintained properly or used after partial failure. (d) The product has been modified, incorrectly adjusted or operated, subjected to incorrect electrical supply or inconsistent electrical supply or used with inappropriate accessories. Consumer guarantees: Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and for compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure. To the extent that they are compatible with the consumer laws in Australia, the exclusions and provisos that apply to the Bay Leather Republic Warranty apply to the consumer guarantees. Consumer guarantee remedies: If there is a major failure with the product, the customer is entitled to: (a) reject the product and get a refund; (b) reject the product and get an identical replacement, or one similar in value if reasonably available; or (c) keep the product and obtain compensation from Bay Leather for the drop in value of the product caused by the major failure. If there is a minor failure with the product, the customer is entitled, at the election of Bay Leather to: (a) a refund of the cost of the product; (b) replacement of the product; or (c) have the product repaired within a reasonable time. Exclusion of implied warranties: Subject to the above, to the full extent permitted by law, all warranties, conditions and other terms express or implied by statute, custom or common law are excluded. Nothing contained in these terms and conditions excludes or restricts any consumer guarantee, warranty, condition, right or remedy implied by any statute (including the Australian Consumer Law) which cannot be excluded, provided that, to the extent that the statute permits, Bay Leather is entitled to limit its liability as set out above for a breach of a guarantee, condition or a warranty implied by that statute. HOW TO MAKE A CLAIM To claim under the Warranty or a consumer guarantee, you must return the product for repair/inspection to your store of purchase, and pay for the associated costs (including any freight and insurance charges), unless these costs are significant in which case we will arrange for the product to be assessed either at your premises or ours at our cost. We will assess the product to determine the nature of the issue, whether you are entitled to a remedy, and in the case of a minor failure, the remedy that will be made available to you.
