1 Subsea UK Report on Survey of Significance of UK Subsea for Energy Industry Development, DTI by OTM Consulting Ltd February 24

2 1 Summary This report has been compiled by OTM Consulting Limited (OTM) for the Energy Industry Development (EID) group of the Department of Trade & Industry to provide details on the survey carried out by OTM to quantify the significance of the UK subsea sector. OTM were asked by the DTI in early-december 23 to carry out a detailed and accurate quantification of the importance of the UK subsea sector, building on the initial work in this area carried out over the preceding few months (during Subsea UK s early stages). The inspiration for this survey arose partly from the experiences of the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), which has shown in recent years the power of being able to quantify accurately one s industry sector, particularly in terms of international awareness of UK capabilities and increased government support. It was also clear that the statistics surrounding the UK subsea industry such as earnings, global market share, employees, number of companies etc were impressive figures, and that these could become key promotional tools for Subsea UK. The steps taken in this survey included: Initial research to ensure that all subsea-related companies in the UK have been identified. This work increased the number of identified companies in the UK subsea sector from ~4 to 75. Construction of an survey questionnaire, based on a survey form embedded within an which merely required the respondent to open the , select answers from tickboxse to 5 simple questions and press a submit button. The whole exercise was designed to take less than 3 seconds. -out of the questionnaire to 75 organisations (copy shown in annex 4). Follow-up expediting of responses to the questionnaire (copy shown in annex 5). Formatting and uploading of the survey form to the new Subsea UK website. Construction of a web-server database to receive all responses to the survey. It had initially been considered that some telephone interviewing would be required, but with the greatly increased sample size, and the high response rate, this was not thought to be necessary. Analysis of the results, verification of a few responses to minimise error, and discussion of conclusions with DTI. The results of the survey can be summarised as follows: 75 organisations were ed an electronic survey form, of which 227 responded representing a high response rate of 3.3%; The subsea sector in the UK accounts for annual turnover of 8.6 billion 42% of this annual turnover billion - is derived from exported goods and services; The sector directly employs >42, people.
