3 Reflections Issue 7 Spring Preface Kevin Fleetwood, General Manager sbu 2009 has been a very difficult year for the Aviation industry. The global recession meant fewer passengers and even fewer business class travellers. The H1N1 flu pandemic even further reduced travelling resulting in a sharp reduction in the number of aircraft flying. The industry impact has been severe with the Aircraft manufacturers reducing production rates by as much as 50% in one case, 30% in another, and the big two predicting rate cuts of as much as 12% for the remainder of 09 and into Globally, airline operators retired or furloughed many of their aircraft and consequently cut back on all but unavoidable paint work in an effort to preserve cash. A number of significant carriers have been forced to ask for financial help from their Governments. For 2010, I feel that we will hit the bottom of the recession curve, taking into account the OEM production rate cuts that we are aware of. I do not expect to see a recovery during 2010, but a base-line for recovery in the after years most likely beginning slowly in It is for certain that the industry will recover because however you look at it, the world is dependant on air travel. We have seen dips in the fortunes of the Aviation industry in earlier years, the Gulf war, 9/11, Sars, and on each occasion the industry took a heavy blow, but recovered. Excluding these difficult times the overall trend is that globally more people travel, and that trend is to continue for the foreseeable future and beyond. One effect of recession is that our customers become more demanding than usual. They want increasing value for money. They want to save costs themselves so want to spend less for the same or even better result. As a consequence, the technology race continues at a faster pace. New technologies that reduce throughput time are critical to the airline operators. Technologies that reduce waste and environmental costs are critical, as are ever more safe products to use. Products that are lighter in weight making aircraft more fuel efficient are vital in operating cost control. 4 Reflections Issue 7 Spring Spot Repair Activator 9009, making repairs even easier The latest available leaflet is part of the series which accompanies the Aviox Advanced Series brochure. You can see from the blue-greenish theme in the color palette. SRA (Spot Repair Activator) 9009 is designed for fast and easy spot repairs. The use of SRA 9009 enables the operator to deliver high quality invisible repairs, in less time, reducing material usage and costs. SRA 9009 is an activator that can be used in the Aviox Advanced Series which utilizes the latest high solid technology and sets the standard for minimum process times and reduced process cycle costs. Aviox Advanced Series is the basecoat / mica / clearcoat system for exterior usage. The system consists of Aviox Finish Aviox Advanced Special Effect Series - Aviox Clearcoat UVR. Employees of the Waukegan (Illinois, USA) facility of Aerospace Coatings received the award and see this honor as an additional encouragement to further improve service to our customers where possible. Tech-talk: Technical Data Sheets dynamic process A vital part of the entire painting process is the Technical Data Sheet. 5 Reflections Issue 7 Spring China Southern Airlines Asian Games Special Guangzhou November 16th 2009, China Southern Airlines revealed B-6057 an A dedicated to the 16th Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou in November This specific aircraft was selected by the Asian Games committee to launch the count down to the opening ceremony. It is a high profile advertisement, promoting the Asian Games, not just in Asia but also Africa, Europe, and Australia. During the run up to the Asian Games, B-6057 is estimated to fly more than 2 million kilometers and 219 thousand passengers, over 30 sectors in just one year. The vision of the 16th Asian Games is Thrilling Games, Harmonious Asia. It is a dream and a promise, that the Games will uphold the spirit of the Olympics and the Asian Games which is to promote unity, friendship and further exchanges between different countries and regions. Forty five countries will compete in over forty sports during the two week event. The Asian Games logo applied to the aircraft has particular significance. Le Yangyang is the name of the leader of the five goats and the name which refers to all of the 16th Asian Games mascots, each of them sporty, cute, and each serving as an official mascot. The mascots embody a part of Guangzhou s unique history and culture and each goat has an individual name that is distinctly Cantonese in style. When you put their names together, Xiang He Ru Yi Le Yangyang - meaning Peace, Harmony and Great Happiness, with everything going as you wish - they fully express the people of Guangzhou s hope that the 16th Asian Games bring peace, prosperity, success and happiness to the people of Asia and fulfil their vision of a Thrilling Games, Harmonious Asia. The complicated but bright and playful Asian Games livery consists of 33 colours, most being applied with a fading effect. The Aerospace Coatings products used were: 10P20-44M + Eclipse and Eclipse clear coat. Twenty painters helped paint the aircraft in just 13 days, a very fast turnaround for such a complex job and testimony to the expertise and dedication of the all the Gameco staff. In true global spirit, the AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings Color Group based in Waukegan (Illinois, USA) developed all the colors within a few days and comprehensive technical support was provided by the Asia Pacific Technical Services team. Asian Games takes to the sky 20 painters helped paint the aircraft in just 13 days; a very fast turnaround for such a complex job and testimony to the expertise and dedication of the all the Gameco staff. 6 Reflections Issue 7 Spring The continuing saga of rebranding The rebranding effort of last year continues full force, made visible in, amongst other things, the brochures. We now have seven brochures available in the new look of AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings. In some cases we have added accompanying fact sheets. Specific subjects relating to some product brochures are put into one page fact sheets which are easy to use. The color palette used in the product brochure is continued in the related fact sheet. See below picture for an example. Aerospace Coatings bids farewell to Regional General Manager General Manager Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) Ian Walker has transferred from Aerospace Coatings to Marine & Protective Coatings. He takes up the position of Global Market Director. Aerospace Coatings staff were on hand at the End of Year gathering on 18 December 2009 to bid him farewell and wish him good luck in the new job. Farewell to Ian Walker Ian Walker joined Aerospace Coatings in 2005 and continued the successes of the business. He guided the EMEA territory through the global crisis focusing on the success factors of the company and streamlining the organization where needed. John Griffin, who served as Aerospace General Manager Americas will succeed Ian as General Manager for the EMEA territory. Welcome to John Griffin

7 Reflections Issue 7 Spring SPIRIT AeroSystems Malaysia SDN BHD All Smiles Spirit Spirit Europe, the European division of Spirit AeroSystems Inc, announced in late 2007 that it had chosen Malaysia as the location for its first aerospace manufacturing facility in Asia. Plans for the initial 242,000 square foot facility to be operational by the first quarter of 2009 were met and the site, adjacent to Subang Airport near Kuala Lumpur, was formally opened by the Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak in October The state-of-the-art building and paint facility at Spirit Malaysia has a unique architectural design, incorporating both the local culture and the corporate feel of Spirit, while keeping the facility as functional as possible. In Malaysia, which is near the equator, the weather can play a major factor in assembly and painting operations. Downpours frequently last for more than an hour with a yearround average temperature of 85ºF (which equals 30ºC) and high humidity. AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings was first invited by Spirit Malaysia to support the training of their painters in A comprehensive training program based on the AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings modular training course was provided, which was subsequently endorsed by the Spirit management team. The first Spirit employees to work at the Subang facility started in January 2009 and the AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings Asia Pacific team has worked closely with them ever since. Over the last twelve months, three one-week training programs were completed for the Paint Shop and Quality Control personnel. In conjunction with the training, AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings has also assisted with the set-up of booths and paint shop protocols. Initially producing a number of composite aerospace wing sub-assemblies for Airbus commercial aircraft, the operation has the capacity for growth and expansion to deliver a wide range of aerostructures and services. When fully operational, it will employ in excess of 450 employees in a variety of manufacturing assembly, engineering, design, commercial and support roles. Spirit Malaysia successfully completed the build of the first Airbus A320 underwing and overwing panel assemblies in March 2009, less than two months after the opening of the facility. The A320 underwing panel was moved from the in-jig operation, to ex-jig process, to painting, and then into final assembly where it was completed before Working together as a team AkzoNobel, Hypercoat and Spirit Malaysia have been instrumental in contributing to the future development of the aerospace manufacturing industry within Malaysia. Within six months of operation Spirit obtained AS9001 approval (a quality management system standard for the aerospace and defense industries), together with Airbus process approvals for Painting operations. Mr. John Flavin, Senior Operations Manager for Spirit Malaysia, had the following to say about AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings: The modular training and support received from AkzoNobel was tailored specifically for our facility and its processes. It was theory based and backed up with practical hands-on instruction which enabled our painters to gain maximum benefit from the training. The guidance and on-going support provided by Hypercoat Enterprises Malaysia, has also played a significant role in the successful start up of our facility. Working together as a team AkzoNobel, Hypercoat and Spirit Malaysia have been instrumental in contributing to the future development of the aerospace manufacturing industry within Malaysia.

8 Reflections Issue 7 Spring Ironman and the qualification process What do the Ironman and qualification of products have to do with each other? Frederic Duhamel of Thales can tell you everything about the Ironman. He graciously sent some sunny pictures of this successful effort last summer, which we would like to share with you, if only to get rid of any winter blues. Thales is a company that works on electronics dedicated to aerospace, defense and communications. The staff number 68,000, making the company of equal size as AkzoNobel. Thales has a presence in 50 countries. The company works with various business units of AkzoNobel, including Marine Coatings for naval purposes. AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings supported the training efforts of Frederic Duhamel and is thrilled with the superb result he booked. He realized his second best time (11 hours 10 minutes and 35 seconds) in spite of an injury seven days before the event. In a response Mr. Duhamel compared the Ironman with a product qualification process, stating it takes the same kind of planning, persistence, commitment and dedication. Frederic has been a finisher in an astonishing six Ironman races as well as a variety of other long distance events. Thales and AkzoNobel are both members of the working group for the future needs of the French army regarding new technology coatings. We look forward to a long and fruitful collaboration. The system qualified at Thales is the successful combination of the Intergard waterborne defense primer and the Intergard waterborne defense top coat. A program of introduction of the system to the Thales subcontractors has been organized together by Thales and AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings. Rolland Massat, technical consultant for Aerospace Coatings, is running all over France to finish the Introduction Program. The Ironman - Frederic Duhamel To date it has been a real success if we consider that all the paint shops visited have considered the Intergard product line as a userfriendly and high tech solution for their needs. The AkzoNobel Community Program AkzoNobel is part of a larger society. The survival of the company depends on acknowledging our place in that larger society and using our resources whenever possible to make it a better place. Sounds good, does it not? The staff of AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings take the idea further than just words and manage to have (muddy) fun in the process. On 1 November 2009 several members of the Leicester, UK, staff took part in the Hell Runner race, a sponsored all-terrain race, in support of cancer research. As you may gather from the picture on the left, the organizers did not exaggerate when they said all- terrain. Fun in the mud and muddy fun! Staff of the Waukegan facility near Chicago, USA, took a different route during the approaching Christmas holidays and started a food drive for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. On December 22, 2009, they delivered a staggering 436 pounds of food. The Fatima Centre of the Good Shepherd sister in Thailand was pleasantly surprised by the donation of a computer to support the training of women and children currently at the center. Graham Windsor and Sister Louise Commented Asia Pacific General Manager Graham Windsor: the selfless dedication of the sisters to the well-being is both inspiring and humbling. We were grateful to be able to help in a small way.

9 Reflections Issue 7 Spring Flight safety training for Aerospace Coatings No matter how you look at it, air travel remains one of the safest forms of travel. This is partly thanks to the intense safety consciousness in the industry. Many aspects of the building and maintenance of aircraft are geared towards keeping aircraft going in the toughest of conditions. Passengers can also contribute to this safety consciousness by being prepared and know what to do in case the unthinkable happens. AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings realized this importance and facilitated an on-site flight safety training for its frequent flyers. You may wonder, how do you do that on a site with offices and factories? Enter a company called Acaleph. Their mobile flight safety truck rolled onto the premises at AkzoNobel in Sassenheim, The Netherlands, for some serious training in preparedness. The attendees soon realized this was not your mainstream safety briefing. The truck offers an ultra-realistic experience. Jump and trust What a life vest feels like Starting off with a short introduction and the appropriate protection to keep clothes clean, the participants first got a taste of how it feels to exit a plane via the escape slides. The practice was followed by a theoretical part on safety indoors, including what a safety jacket feels like when it is fully inflated. In the afternoon, it was back to the mobile truck. Inside was a full-scale, fully functional cabin mock-up with multiple fire sources and a smoke generator with the ability to fill the cabin with smoke in the better part of a minute. The participants experienced first hand how it feels to try to get out of a smoke filled aircraft. Jan van der Voorn, Operations Manager and one of the organizers of the training, stated that the flight safety awareness training was actually recommended by customers of AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings. He added: Airlines give this training to their personnel and they informed us that it would be beneficial to business travellers as well. The safety awareness training has provided the frequent flyers with a better understanding of safety tools on board, and the safety procedures that can increase the chance to survive in case of emergency. In addition, for the aircraft enthusiasts working with AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings, the training provided some fun as well.
