1 Horizontal Connection System Shrikant M Kanitkar, Subsea Piping Engineer, AkerSolutions ABSTRACT The emerging oil and gas business in India and the need of the hydrocarbon products with energy hungry India s needs, results in the exploration and field developments in the deep and Ultra deep water subsea environment becomes inevitable. To cater to these needs and to have the cost effective solutions, quick, safe and environmental friendly connections becomes an integral part of the subsea business which has challenges of its own. Aker Solutions have come up with next generation connection system named as Horizontal Connection System (HCSTM) keeping in mind the aspects from the design till actual commissioning of the systems. The connection under discussion can be installed on the subsea modules, or within the field to connect the lines. Horizontal connection system as the name suggests helps in achieving following features:- 1. Connect the rigid pipe spools to the module 2. Connect the flexible jumpers to the module 3. Connect the umbilical to the module 4. Can be installed on the support structure to achieve minimum installation time. 5. Can be connected or disconnected using intervention vessel 6. Modules can be retrieved independently without recovery of the jumpers or flexible 7. Can be installed with or without guide wires 8. No heavy running tools required 9. Use of ROV carried tools for connections & interventions 10. Fast installation time Successful qualification testing and the long knowhow of the subsea field helped Aker Solutions to develop the connection system which are truly focused to customer needs and installation friendliness. Ongoing Installations of these connections in North Sea environment also marks the major milestone and gives confidence to serve installations globally. Keeping in mind the Indian sunrise Oil and Gas business and use of light weight & versatile connection system will help in keeping minimum intervention tools which can be used over wide size range thus helping the oil companies to increase interchangeability & keep minimum tool pool. 152

19 About the Author Shrikant M Kanitkar is the Subsea Piping Engineer for AkerSolutions, He have educational Qualification such as B.E (Mechanical) June VIT College of Engineering, Pune University, India with distinction and Post graduate diploma in piping design and engineering, MIT College, Pune, stood first with Distinction 86% marks. His experience is of 18 years. He has Key Areas of Experience in Oil and Gas based Subsea Engineering work like piping design, jumper analysis, testing and FAT work related with subsea equipments. Worked on LPG bottling plant like LPG spheres piping design. Worked in Acrylic fibre manufacturing plant for facility development and subsequent piping within the new facilities. Soaps and detergent plant piping design Steam turbine steam piping design and stress analysis work. Design as per IBR rules. Textile plant piping design including design of utility requirements and piping within facility. Maintenance of Seamless pipe manufacturing machines. Maintenance of pressure reduction pig iron plant equipments. Design of fibre glass moulds and quality improvements related with manual moulding. He has Specialized Experience on Skuld SPS project as Tie-in lead and was responsible for design related activities of HCS F & R connection system and related allied equipments. Worked as Engineering lead for Subsea manifold and Template design Worked as Piping lead for subsea manifold design for MA-D6 and GEM manifolds for Reliance Industries Ltd. and responsible for procurement of pressure containing components. Worked as testing engineer for piping work related with Manifold like MA- D6, GEM, Trym and Oselvar projects including planning and management of activities related with testing on day today basis. Worked as support engineer for Manifold installation work for Reliance Industries for KG-D6 project. Worked as tender engineer of CLOV & Egina Project for TOTAL project. Worked as Pipe stress engineer for BP King multiphase boosting pump module. Worked as Pipe stress engineer for Kikeh Field development for rigid jumper analysis work. Participated in installation of subsea equipment during GEM installation work. He is currently working as engineering lead for Manifold design group on Svalin SPS for Statoil which includes all interfaces, procurement status, discussions with Client, presentations, fabrication teams and technical assistance during testing phase. Since Worked on Top side piping engineering up to Working in Subsea engineering from I was worked as engineering lead and previously as piping lead engineer for manifold group. On top side worked as area lead engineer for Thai Acrylic company project. Previously worked with Page consultancy for 2 years. We supported grass route level plants comprising mainly boiler related work such as 4MW steam turbine steam lines, textile process plant, carpet manufacturing plant dye plant etc. He also worked with Kalyani Seamless tubes Ltd, Baramati for 1 year. I was working as Sr. Engineer (Maintenance) for the seamless tube manufacturing plant. He also worked with Kirloskar ferrous industries Ltd, Karnataka for 3 years. I have worked for their mini blast furnace of 1.2 MTPA. I was involved in the project work Boiler house, Pump house erection & commissioning activities for mechanical & Piping, Inspection of furnace related valves. He also worked with Roplas India Ltd, Pune. Joined as Trainee Engineer in Quality 170

20 control & vendor development division for Fibre glass re-in forced Plastic moulded components for Automobile manufacturer M/s Mahindra & Mahindra, India.. Worked for 2 ¼ years. He has Special Assignments like : Norway Worked on ENI 15/6 tender during precontract engineering for smooth start up of the project on contract award. Tender lost. Norway - Trym and Oselvar development project- Engineering lead for WP-03 activities like design review presentations, setting Master document list, Interface management for WP-03, Procurement responsibility, Timely delivery of documents, handling team of 12 engineers. Worked on Piping FAT testing documents and dealt with DNV and Dong during project for clarifications and answering day today activities.- Delivered on time. Trym production started. Oselvar will be operational by end of the year. Norway Worked as Tender engineer for CLOV project with responsibilities like reading and understanding client specifications, exceptions and clarifications listing, setting conceptual model and working out piping MTO and quantities. Norway Reliance Industries Ltd.- KG-D6 and MA-D6 Projects Worked as Piping lead engineer and responsible for dialogue with client, preparing specifications, calculations, Test procedures and conducting design reviews, PO placement and follow up. Malaysia - Reliance Industries Ltd.- KG-D6 and MA-D6 Projects Handled the FAT of pressure containing piping within manifold. Setting test plan, checking test equipments, planning material for the test and documentation of the test. Thailand Thai acrylic project Acrylic fibre plant Visited site to detail out the tie-in points and discussing about the site changes based on the locations of existing plant facilities. His Skills Developed with Worked as trainer for MA-D6 and KG-D6 working taskforce to get acquainted with system and WP-03 deliverables specifically. I have conducted presentations on system definition, structures, Operation and maintenance of ROV tooling, first line of defence. On MA-D6 worked as Piping lead engineer and was responsible for Piping design finalisation, MTO, procurement, issuing specifications, stress analysis, issuing isometrics, FAT support, installation support and training to RIL employees. 2. Kalyani seamless tubes Ltd.- Work involved Planning for the proactive maintenance of the plant machinery, Records & the analysis of the Break downs of the equipments, Feasibility study for the purchase of the new machinery. (Technical aspect) & Day - today functioning of the department 5. Kirloskar Ferrous Industries Blast furnace manufacturing pig iron Responsible for assigning of the work load to the operators. Monthly & annual shutdown planning for the furnace. Proactive maintenance of the rotary equipments like High Pressure Blowers, ID & FD fans & pumps like condition monitoring with the help of equipments like FASTALINE. I have also worked as Safety liaison officer for Furnace area. 6. Roplas Industries Ltd. Fibre glass reinforced plastic - Involved in Development of the FRP components, Analysis of the rejections & taking corrective maintenance, Presentation of rejection reports & its analysis to Management for production planning, Preparation of testing Jigs & Fixtures for ease of inspection and reduction of rejection. 172
