3 LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Constant growth, in 202 as well LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Today, more than ever, responsibility and steadfastness Ignacio González Chairman of Ecoembes Despite the fragile state of the Spanish economy, the figures returned by our Integrated Management System (IMS) have shown significant growth Let nobody be in any doubt. These are difficult times. As organisations we are a reflection of the complex current situation and yet are also excellent indicators of what is an evident truth. Despite the delicate state of the domestic economy, our IMS (Integrated Management System) is showing significant growth. In 202, Ecoembes celebrated its th anniversary, which we marked by publishing a book which sets out the decade and a half of the IMS. Looking back, we can see how we have evolved as the country itself has, accompanying the transformation of a whole society. I would like to think that we have been active players in that change. I therefore feel it is more interesting to analyse 202 in perspective. While we cannot ignore the complicated situation we all find ourselves in, the percentage of packaging that is recycled has not stopped growing over the past years, and 202 has been no exception. All of this means we continue to give watertight guarantees that we are an organisation that fulfils its mandate, but also that we are a key player in protecting the Environment, creating employment and reducing the use of new raw materials, water and energy, as well as the emission of greenhouse gases through our activities. Nevertheless, going beyond mere figures, statistics and percentages, I prefer to focus on the spirit that keeps the wheels of the SIG turning ever more strongly. Once again, Ecoembes stands as an example of how to design a system which meshes perfectly, with dozens of parts, some bigger than others, but all nonetheless essential. It is said that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Here at Ecoembes, we have made sure all our links know their importance in ensuring that the chain is a living, breathing thing that inspires confidence, security and strength. This is a philosophy that will take us into the future. Reaching a 70.3% recycling rate of all packaging introduced into the market by our member companies was the challenge we set ourselves in January 202. Now, with all the data transparently audited and verified we can see that this target is a reality, one that allows us to look even further to other yet more ambitious objectives. Even starting later than other European countries, since 997 Ecoembes has seen its Integrated Management System consistently grow year on year, making it the ideal waste management model. The figures back us up all the way. I did not want to finish this presentation without stressing the enormous gratitude that Ecoembes owes to its former chairman, Marcos de Quinto. During his years at the helm, our IMS has consolidated its position as one of Europe s integrated management systems. We now have to respect and further strengthen its legacy, ensuring that Ecoembes becomes a present and future reality. Óscar Martín General Manager of Ecoembes Without wishing to downplay the currently complicated panorama, in 202 we managed to increase the recycling rate to 70.3% Today more than ever we need to fully appreciate what we have achieved, what we stand for as an organisation and what we represent to Spanish society. The results which Ecoembes presents to Spanish society as the fruit of its 202 activities are, as might well be imagined, a product of responsibility and steadfastness. Responsibility could well be the word which best characterises our work. It perfectly sums up our position with regard to the world we live in, a world in crisis and yet a world that knows how to move forward with a commitment to tangible certainties, leaving the unknown behind. However, we need responsibility to go hand in hand with steadfastness, a trait that sets Ecoembes apart year after year, increasing the rate of recycling and strengthening the social and economic importance of our work. Without ignoring what is a complicated situation, yet refusing to be intimidated by it, we have managed to increase our recycling rate to 70.3%, well above the levels required of us by European legislation and two percentage points above the figure reached in 20. Again, responsibility and steadfastness. It is responsibility that drives us, these days more than ever, to create employment, protect the Environment, show a commitment to ecodesign (3,92 preventative measures in the 2,440 companies that have taken part in the first Business Prevention Plan ), invest in R&D, reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, etc. Ecoembes activities directly and indirectly have created over 42,000 jobs in the green employment field, as well as generating environmental wealth. Thanks to the closed cycle proposed by Ecoembes for the management of 00% of waste packaging of which we are a part. The planet s bio-capacity is at its limit and we cannot allow ourselves the luxury of managing our limited, finite resources inefficiently. Thanks to the recovery of packaging to be recycled and the preventive measures introduced by our member companies, the material from this packaging becomes a secondary raw material with a new life, that can relieve environmental pressure on natural resources. Now is the time to commit ourselves to solutions that work, to demonstrate our optimism for the future, because all the information concerning our activities over the past year confirms this. We are proud to be able to say that practically 00% of the Spanish population has access to one or more of the 00,000 yellow and blue containers in the country s streets and squares, that we have signed 07 collaboration agreements with local and regional governments and that, based on the data from the most recent study into people s habits, 72% separated all or almost all their domestic waste at the point of origin. All of this is thanks to the fact that local and regional governments across Spain have opted to implement an Integrated Management System (IMS), the same model used to manage 9% of all European waste. However, if we say that responsibility is the word that best defines us, we also have to use it to describe the attitude of Spain s citizens who, in the majority of cases, are aware of the need to separate packaging waste at source. Without them, without the effort made every day by millions of responsible people, all our work would count for nothing. For another year, I would like to thank all them and all the other bodies and organisations that form a part of our activities. Our future is bright! 4 Ecoembes 202 Ecoembes 202

4 MAIN SERVICES AND FIGURES 202 Revenue 202 Expenses 202 Advanced societies have a commitment to the Environment in order to safeguard its resources for future generations by adopting sustainable practices. The need to manage the waste generated by economic and industrial activities is part of this global commitment. For the past 6 years, Ecoembes has been helping its member companies (there are currently over 2,000) to meet legal regulations on the recycling of their packaging, but also to minimise the impact of that packaging on the Environment through prevention plans, aimed at increasing public commitment to of recycling and leading research into the best way to improve waste management processes, among other activities. In this way, the Ecoembes IMS (Integrated Management System) is organised as a model of responsibility, distributed across three areas: business, local and regional government and citizens. Thanks to its environmental commitment, the IMS is of great importance to society, involving its citizens in the recycling of domestic packaging and the conservation of the Planet for the coming generations. 7 CITIZENS CITIZENS, THEIR CONTRIBUTION AND THEIR COMMITMENT Citizens are the key element in the recycling equation. This has been the Ecoembes philosophy since the outset and, as a result, there has been intense activity in terms of public awareness raising via different information and publicity channels, as well as taking part in numerous awareness raising campaigns among the Spanish citizenry. The media reported information on Ecoembes on over,300 occasions in 202 and there are thousands of people who receive information on the SIG through its own channels, such as its websites (see the new blog planetarecicla.com) or the Noticias news bulletin service. It is no coincidence that in 202, 72% of Spaniards said they separated all or almost all their daily waste for recycling purposes, according to the 202 Habits and Attitudes Towards Recycling Study. In 202 the recycling rate for domestic waste was 70.3%, about two percentage points above 20 levels. This has been made possible thanks to 28,606 containers and the 07 Agreements that Ecoembes has signed with local and regional governments, meaning that 99% of the Spanish population has access to the domestic waste recycling system. Also important is the work undertaken by 9 selection plants (47 of which are automated), the constant efforts made in the field of R&D, the commitment of recycling companies and the fact that accreditation processes guarantee the traceability of 00% of the recycled material ,99,77 trecycled tons of domestic waste (70.3%) 28,606 containers installed (344,62 yellow and 84,044 blue) COLLECTION Recycling Energy evaluation Total evaluation The recycling cycle has been made possible thanks to the attitude of Spain s citizens who separate their waste at source and the hard work of local and regional governments, responsible for selective collection and with whom Ecoembes has signed numerous Agreements.
