Examples of and discussion about typical final projects in Technology. Hands-on introduction to basic overview of the design process and an introduction to the TEAC 105 final project: a 3D printed Compressed Air Engine. 3 The session will start with CAD modelling of the Compressed Air Engine. Students will assemble a virtual model of the engine, modify parts to their own design and create compelling realistic images. A tour of Camosun s Innovation Centre will be followed by tours of the department s machine shop and 3D printer farm. Students will select and prepare a part for 3D printing 3 Students will create an assembly drawing of their engine or analyse stresses in one of their engine parts using 3D CAD simulation software. In teams, students will assemble a 3D printed Compressed Air Engine based on their CAD-created virtual model. An engine speed competition will be held. Course wrap-up. 3 in our lives: in modern consumer electronics such as MP3 players and iphones. Introduction to electronics parts and systems through teardown of electronics devices such as Guitar Hero guitar and Beatmania DJ console. training and careers. 3 hardware: Review of electronics parts. LED biasing. Soldering. Construction of musical memory game. 3 software: Basic microcontroller programming concepts. 5 TEAC 105 Explorations in Technology This course provides an introduction to careers and basic skills in, Electronic and Technology, Civil Technology, and Technology. Students will complete a project in each of the 4 areas. This course is intended to provide participants with an opportunity to explore the 4 technology areas, and support their career and post-secondary decision making. Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to: 1. Identify careers in the 4 technology fields (Civil,, and ) 2. Civil - Identify various civil engineering projects and the role that civil engineering plays in each, apply civil engineering methods and calculations to a simple design and civil engineering project 3. - demonstrate simple 3D CAD modeling skills, basic shop skills and safety techniques, and identify the design elements associated with the completion of a small mechanical engineering project create a simple electronics circuit, describe simple microcontroller programming concepts, and list the elements of and build a small electronics project use a programming language to examine the fundamentals of software design and development. Course Details: Length of Course: 39 hours weeks Course Structure: 3 hours per week 1 orientation session, 9 hours per Technology area Credits: 4 Credits (2 from the College, 2 from the High School) Class Size: minimum 18 maximum students per section Anticipated Audience: Grades students Prerequisites: None Start /End: Feb. 2 May, 17 Dates: Feb. 2, 9,,, Mar. 2, 9,, Apr. 6,,,, May 4,. NOTE: There will be no classes on Mar. & 30 due to Spring Break Time: Fridays - 3:00 pm 6:00 pm : Interurban Campus Technology Building Rooms shown on schedule Expectations: If you miss one class and inform your teacher ahead of time you will receive a make-up assignment. If you miss two classes in one section you will receive a not complete (NC) mark for that section of the course. Two NCs means you fail the course. To report an absence, please contact your Course Instructor (see page 2) or the SIP office You are expected to attend the course when your school has a non-instructional day. In addition to being a secondary student, you are now also a college student, and you will earn credits on both your high school and postsecondary transcripts. Here s some useful info as you begin your post-secondary experience at Camosun. Your Camosun ID & Login Your Camosun ID is used to log in to many online services. A Camosun ID starts with a capital C followed by 7 numbers. Example: C To log in to a computer on campus, you will have to input your Username, which is your Camosun ID. Your Password is your birthday, formatted MMDDYY. Immediately after logging in, you will have to reset your password. Choose something you will remember. You can get an official Student Photo ID card by visiting Camosun s Lansdowne or Interurban Library. You will need to bring official identification. For more information, see Camosun.ca/id-cards. The ID card, which has your photo and your student number, is also your library card. It can even be used to get discount services at local businesses and restaurants! Drops & Withdrawals To drop the course without anything showing on your academic record, you must do so by Feb, 18. You can withdraw from the course without academic penalty until April, 18. You will receive a W on your transcript. Transportation & Parking Parking is provided on a first-come, firstserved basis and parking spaces cannot be guaranteed or reserved. For parking locations and fee information, visit Camosun.ca/transportation. Carpooling, bicycle, and bus are all transportation options that reduce parking congestion and costs. 7 TEAC 105 Explorations in Technology Guidelines for Students Attendance This is a hands-on participatory class that requires your attendance for each class. a. Students are required to contact the instructor or the SIP office prior to class start to report absences. b. If you miss one class and inform your instructor ahead of time you will receive a make-up assignment. If you miss two classes in one section you will receive a mark of zero for that section of the course. Performance Students are to actively participate in the course to successfully complete each section. Grading Each of the 4 sections of the course will be assessed individually then combined to give a final grade. A final grade of 50% or higher is required to pass the course.
