Phone: Office hours: TBA CATALOG DESCRIPTION: BIOL F426 W,O/2 Ornithology (n) 3 Credits Offered Spring Evolution, anatomy, physiology, distribution, migration, breeding biology of birds, their classification and identification. Prerequisites: BIOL F115X; BIOL F116X; COMM F131X or COMM F141X; ENGL F111X; ENGL F211X or ENGL F213X; or permission of instructor. (2+3) SCHEDULE Lectures: Elvey Auditorium W, F 9:15AM-10:15AM Lab 103 Irving I, F 2:15PM-5:15 PM DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: MEETS one-half Core oral upper division communication intensive requirement and Core upper division writing intensive requirement and Natural Science degree requirement with laboratory O/2: (1) You will give a short oral presentation in lab on a bird species of your choice using 2-3 powerpoint slides. This presentation will be in sequence with coverage of that species in the lab outline. (2) You will give a 12-minute presentation, with 2 additional minutes for questions and answers, of your research paper at the end of the semester in lecture or lab. W: You will write a research paper with about 8 pages of text (double-spaced). It should include 5-10 references from the refereed journal literature. For ideas, look through the textbook, the journals listed below, or talk to Mel or me. Before finalizing your topic, make sure that one or both of us have approved it. You will first submit a final draft of the paper, which I will read, edit, grade and return to you (10% of final grade). You will then revise the paper based on my edits and suggestions and turn in a final version (5% of final grade). You must turn in your original submittal with your resubmittal. See schedule below for due dates for final draft and final version. ***** 1

2 PARTICIPATION: Although we won t base your grade on your attendance in lectures and labs, attending both will greatly aid both your grade in the course and your understanding of the material. In both lectures and labs there will occasionally be unannounced quizzes. If you miss a quiz because you are either late or not there at all, you will receive a zero score on that quiz unless you have been excused by one of us. Any planned absences, for example, UAF sport events for team members, must have our approval BEFOREHAND. DISABILITIES: We will work with the Office of Disabilities Services to provide reasonable accommodation to students with disabilities; please let us know if you have any special needs and we will work with you to do everything we can to help. LABORATORY SPECIMENS All study specimens will be available during laboratory sessions and scheduled review sessions; however, they are maintained in locked cabinets at other times.
