A product entered in multiple categories requires a separate physical sample, set of labels, entry form and fee for each category. Following are definitions of the Categories to help you make your choice. The purpose of a thin-walled package is to improve sustainability by reducing the amount of material, energy and resources used in the product while maintaining the product packaging strength, suitability for the intended use, and creativity in reducing wall thickness with the use of an in-mold label. Judges look at the part itself, considering the complexity of the part, the design, the mold that made the part, the decoration or label designed for the part and the complexity of the molding process. The label should be one that is truly creative and innovative in the use of materials, inks, print processes and the suitability of the label for the IML process. A combination of a unique blow molded part design with an innovative in-mold label that produces an outstanding and appealing decorated product. This is a category in which a product family is judged on how the various sizes and various types of the same product are presented to the consumer. The category demonstrates how one package and label can be used for many products in a family because of similarity of labeling, design, size or ingredients. This is a thermoformed package that is designed for food or consumer product applications. IML is used to create an innovative package that attracts consumer attention, showcases the product inside, provides other properties that validates the suitability of IML for this particular package. This is a thermoformed durable product that makes use of in-mold decoration or label to provide long-lasting designs, safety labels, consumer information labels, or otherwise makes use of the in-mold decorating or labeling process to enhance the product s attractiveness or usefulness over the long term. This is a unique or evolving design or use of IML/IMD not yet in commercial production.
4 IMDA AWARDS COMPETITION Real Experts, Real Answers, Real Value As the judges review your competition entry they use the following criteria to help them better understand the entries and to make their final decisions. Many of the questions below are on the entry form. The information below is informative only for the competition entrants. Judging Criteria for Each Category 1) Best Part Design: Judges look at the part design as well as how the label/decoration is integrated into the part. i. What makes this part unique or innovative and why? ii. What design complexities make IML more challenging? iii. How will this part design provide a solution to a consumer need and convince her to buy the product? (Reveal the personality of the product.) iv. Who was the part designer (i.e. The brand owner, an outside industrial or retail design firm) v. Are the part and label designed for sustainability and/or recycling? 2) Best Thin Wall Packaging: The purpose of a thin-walled package is to improve sustainability by reducing the amount of material, energy and resources used in the product while maintaining the product packaging strength, suitability for the intended use, and creativity in reducing wall thickness with the use of an in-mold label. i. Were all the above criteria considered in making the decision to thin the wall sections? ii. Is this a new package or container design or a re-design of a package that was heavier and less sustainable? iii. Why is this packaging or product suited for IML? iv. What does thin-walling plus the use of IML contribute to the overall sustainability of this package/product and use of energy and recyclability? v. Who designed the part the brand owner, an outside design firm? 3) Best Injection Molded Durable (IMD) Part: Judges look at the part itself, considering the complexity of the part, the design, the mold that made the part, the decoration or label designed for the part and the complexity of the molding process. a. Judges also consider: vi. Who designed the part? vii. What were some of the challenges or complexities of the design, molding and IML or IMD process that makes this part unique, etc.? viii. Has this been tried before? ix. How does the part demonstrate innovation, sustainability and commercial success? 4) Best Injection Molded IML Package: Judges look at the part itself, considering the complexity of the part, the design, the mold that made the part, the decoration or label designed for the part and the complexity of the molding process. a. Judges also consider: i. Who designed the part? ii. What were some of the challenges or complexities of the design, molding and IML or IMD process that makes this part unique, etc.? iii. Has this been tried before? iv. How does the part demonstrate innovation, sustainability and commercial success? 5) Best Label Design: The label should be one that is truly creative and innovative in the use of materials, inks, print processes and the suitability of the label for the IML process. i. What is the label design supposed to convey to the consumer? ii. Is this for re-branding of a current product/package or a new product/package? iii. What were the considerations that went into creating this label? iv. Why is this the best label design for this particular package or product? v. Is the quality of the label printing, registration and readability excellent? vi. Does this design replace another and why was IMD the method of choice over the previous label decoration process? vii. How many colors used and if it replaces a previous process and why? viii. What are the unique features incorporated into the design or any particular challenges that sets it apart from other entries in this category? 1
5 6) Best Blow-Molded Part/Package: a. Judges consider the design of the package/part and its complexity: i. Why is this package unique? ii. Does it have a unique shape? iii. How did the production of this part/package demonstrate sustainability and resource efficiency? iv. Difficulty level for blow molding? v. Label application difficulty? vi. Appropriateness for the IML processes? vii. Who did the package/part design the brand owner or an outside firm? 7) Best Product Family: This is a category in which a product family is judged on how the various sizes and various types of the same product are presented to the consumer. The category is to demonstrate how one package and label can be used for many products in a family because of similarity of labeling, design, size or ingredients. i. Does the label tell the consumer that one member of the product family is different than another member of the product family? ii. Is the product recyclable? iii. Does the label represent an identity of the product so that when the consumer sees it, they can immediately identify that this is a part of the product family? iv. Suitability of the IML process (or IMD process) for the product. v. What is unique about the label, the product and the family presentation? 8) Best Thermoformed Package: This is a thermoformed package that is designed for food or consumer product applications. IML is used to create an innovative package that attracts consumer attention, showcases the product inside and provides other properties that validate the suitability of IML for this particular package. i. Challenges of the mold and the forming? ii. Is the package recyclable? iii. Were resources saved by using this packaging rather than former packaging? 9) Best Thermoformed Durable IMD Part: This is a thermoformed durable product that makes use of in-mold decoration or label to provide long-lasting designs, safety labels, consumer information labels, or otherwise makes use of the in-mold decorating or labeling process to enhance the product s attractiveness or usefulness over the long term. i. Is it thermoformed or pressure formed? ii. What resources were saved over previous production in the making of this part? iii. Was recycling at end-of-life addressed? 10) Best Prototype Part/Package: This is a unique or evolving design or use of IML/IMD not yet in commercial production. i. See above dependent on category 2
