4 Berlin Wall Museum: Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie Anne of Green Gables House Anne s Room Avoid it. Expensive, textheavy, disappointing and terrible curation. I ve been here a few times - when I first visited Berlin in 2003 and several times with visitors since I moved to Berlin in Positive aspect: It's very central, and very informative. Negative aspects: The entry fee is one of the highest in Berlin and is not justified considering Berlin has some of the best museums in the world. The exhibits are indeed informative but very text-heavy (the majority of the text is only in German), outdated and very few (if any) are interactive: as another reviewer said, there is very little effort put into engaging the visitor at all. The audioguide numbers are out of sequence and few and far between. Social Resources Community Organizations Translators & Volunteers Cultural Representatives Interpreter Recruits Libraries, City Hall, Chamber of Commerce Schools, Board of Education Universities Personal Resources Confidence, Humor, & Humility What are your fundamental themes and messages? What universal concepts are present? Empathy & Perceptiveness Preparation & awareness of limitations Ask questions instead of assuming Know the difference between cultural norms & stereotypes Start dialogues while remaining compassionate toward yourself 4
5 Translators These are your partners in interpretation. Interpreters: spoken, Translators: text Engage with them beforehand to explain basic themes and concepts, learn about their experience and skills, and welcome them to their role as co-interpreter If possible, give them a copy of the program in advance Build in consistent pauses and check-ins Game of Telephone Devian_art Translating is like being a medium, standing in the shoes of the person you re translating; one becomes the other. -Charles Simic 5
6 Common Translator Categories Professional Trained Greater confidence Could have own perceptions that color translations Able to bridge cultural gaps Amateur Prepared Socially connected May lack professional vocabulary Relates to visitors Translators cont. Student Academically prepared Could be native speaker May not relate culturally, only linguistically Accidental Part of group Wild card Possibly lacks training, relevant vocabulary Potential for great insight to visitors Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends. -Maya Angelou 6
