2 2011 Annual Conference Overview Changing mindsets requires new paradigms. Companies are today being challenged to anticipate and adapt to future requirements with greater speed. How is Industrial R&D evolving and what are the new dynamics in the uncertain, fast moving and changing environment? The 2011 Annual Conference will consider this challenge and explore the different approaches and practices being adopted by successful companies. Delegates will discover how large and small companies are creating new paradigms. How have they gone about their reinvention, and how are they generating new solutions to the economical, societal and business sustainability challenges we all face? Amongst others the Annual Conference will address the following questions: The new norm is constant change. How do companies approach the balance between local and global contexts? Will the local solution always dominate? How might industry position itself in the global ecosystem? Companies need to reinvent themselves and look for sustainable growth to survive. What will be the impact of clean/green technology in challenges related to sustainable use of materials and resources? The new dynamics will require new investments. How are companies approaching the risk management of technology in their new ventures; how strong a driver is Sustainability for both short and long term rewards? New paradigms will require new management styles; how will companies accommodate the diversity coming with the new generation of younger managers? Defining the skills required for the future and ensuring capable human resources will be available when needed, will demand a common vision between industry and educational institutions. The change in mindsets will require new approaches to IP management. Is the era of an uncritical pursuit of patents over? How should IP issues be handled in a global market? How might companies collaborate effectively with completely new partners, e.g., NGOs, Not For Profit organisations, environmental lobby groups etc.. EIRMA believes the atmosphere and environs of Cannes will be a strong stimulus to this debate, and delegates will learn from the examples of how local organisations e.g. CEMEF, and the companies at Sophia Antipolis are responding to these challenges. Chairman: Léopold Demiddeleer, Future Businesses Director, Solvay and EIRMA President. The EIRMA Annual Conference provides an unparalleled opportunity for networking and cross-fertilising ideas and experiences between managers in different industrial sectors. Who Should Attend The Conference is intended for people working at senior and middle levels of management, within corporate and business functions that are responsible for research, technology and product development. We also encourage senior delegates to attend with talented junior managers who would benefit from exposure to this unique opportunity. The audience will include a broad cross-section of the European research and business community, including academia and other research centres.

4 Thursday 26 May 12:00 Welcome Lunch 13:45 Conference Opening by EIRMA President Changing mindsets requires new paradigms! New paradigms and new dynamics will call for accelerated evolution and quantum leaps in R&D, technology and innovation, not just in the targets for research but also in the methodology and practice of research and development. There are extraordinary opportunities for mankind as well as huge potential risks, whether societal, economical or environmental. Industrial Research will be a key part of the game. The EIRMA Annual Conference 2011 will help us to navigate between these benefits and risks for the best interests of society, the planet, and for company profit. Dr. Léopold Demiddeleer, Solvay's Director of Future Businesses 14:10 Surfing on the waves of innovation Since the advent of the Industrial Revolution, there have been five long waves of technological innovations. Whilst each is different, they all have a number of similarities from which we can derive more general conclusions. This presentation will identify the five long waves and look more closely at the current long wave - the ICT Revolution. We will consider how that fifth wave will play out over the next two decades and speculate on what the features of the sixth wave might be. Dr. Steven Aguilar Millan, Head of the European Futures Observatory in UK 14:40 A Centennial of Progress IBM is marking the 100-year anniversary of its founding on June 16, Over its century of existence, IBM has gone from cheese slicers to typewriters to putting man on the moon to beating man in chess and most recently in trivia. The company had tremendous growth spurts and a near death experience. First established in 1945, IBM Research's strategy has changed dramatically over the years. Today, IBM Research delivers an integrated solutions approach that is now focused on IBM's vision of a smarter planet. This presentation will focus on implementing this new open, collaborative strategy and the cultural impact that needed to be managed and understood and how IBM reinvented itself with a particular view from the research laboratories. Dr. Matthias Kaiserswerth, Director and Vice President, Zurich Research Laboratory

6 Friday 27 May 08:30 Welcome and Introduction by EIRMA President Dr. Léopold Demiddeleer, Solvay's Director of Future Businesses 08:45-10:45 Changing Mindsets: Facing a changing environment with new dynamics, by Creating Shared Value Shared value focuses on the connections between societal and economic progress and it will have the power to unleash the next wave of global growth for companies and society. (HBR 01/2011) 08:45 Towards Sustainable Innovation The future is about business as unusual. What does that mean? Philips has changed course in 2007, announcing that it aims to become a leading company in Health and Well-being. A set of four sustainable innovation strategies will be discussed: - Building relationships towards a higher purpose - Enabling sustainable lifestyles - Creating multi-stakeholder value - Using technology and knowledge responsibly. We will explore how Philips is acting upon these new innovation strategies and why for sustainable innovation back casting is more applicable than forecasting. Dr. Dorothea Seebode, Senior Director Sustainability, Philips Corporate Technologies & Philips Research 09:15 Changing the mindset from Competition to Cooperation between R&D Centres Rishikesha T. Krishnan, Professor of Corporate Strategy & Policy, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, India 09:45 Implementing lean R&D How Vaisala moved from implementing tools to empowering people In 2009, Vaisala started on a journey to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their R&D team. This case study will present how they defined the change drivers, how they got buy in across the board, and how they involved the rest of the company. It will demonstrate how they went searching for the 'right lean for R&D': benchmarking results from multiple lean R&D approaches, and their selected approach for long term sustainable improvements. The talk will end with a review of the implementation journey: from the initial steps through pilot programs, and into long term implementation. Mr. Jorrit de Groot, Head of Operation development in R&D, Vaisala 10:15 Is it the end of the era of when Patents are the be-all and end-all? The change in mindsets will require new approaches for IPR management. How should IP issues be handled in a global market? How might companies collaborate effectively with completely new partners, e.g., NGOs, Not for Profit organisations, and environmental lobby groups? Werner Fröhling, Senior IP Counsel
