OUTREACH: THE NEXT GENERATION TEENA GADE Vehicle Science Engineer, Sahara Force India TORIN SPENCE Skills Manager, Horiba-MIRA
Outreach A journey from engineering lectures to the face of the engineering for the BBC
Introduction Teena Gade - Vehicle Science Engineer at Roborace Responsible for the simulation capability and the simulator for the AI development platform Roborace is going to be a motorsport platform for AI competition This is a little insight into my journey as an engineer
My CV in summary As a child, I was always interested in cars and eventually in motorsport Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from UCL Masters in Computational Methods for Aeronautics at Imperial College First 'real' job working for Vauxhall BTCC team Had many jobs since!
How did I end up in this "odd" place? As a child, I loved the car (I think all children do...) My parents never pushed me towards any particular toys I was probably encouraged towards Maths and Science... I was always taught whatever I did I had to give my best And if I worked hard I could do anything
How did I end up in this "odd" place? As a child, I loved the car (I think all children do...) My parents never pushed me towards any particular toys I was probably encouraged towards Maths and Science... I was always taught whatever I did I had to give my best And if I worked hard I could do anything It never even occurred to me that this might not be the case! So I just kept at it......it's taken me to some pretty exciting projects and places...
Places my work has taken me... Land Speed Record JCB DieselMax Diese l Land Speed Record Bonneville 2006
Places my work has taken me... World Rally Championship Subaru World Rally Team Mini World Rally Team Skoda Rally Development Team
Places my work has taken me... Formula 1 WilliamsF1 Force India
Places my work has taken me... Roborace Now at Roborace first Autonomous Race Series Got to know the project as I let myself be driven by the AI for the BBC!
Places my work has taken me... Roborace Now at Roborace first Autonomous Race Series Got to know the project as I let myself be driven by the AI for the BBC!
How did I end up at the BBC? Picked up LinkedIn Profile, asked to 'audition' after video call Horizon - been running for over 50 Years Really quite honoured to be asked Science program many will have grown up with I grew up watching Horizon too! BBC intention is to use industry experts to convey the story BBC and Science Museum seem totally engaged in process of promoting STEM subjects
How did I end up at the BBC? Dawn of the Driverless Car One of the current 'hot' topics Demystify - lots of negative press Press play on peoples fears of the unknown This reinforces why they look for 'experts' Sift the truth from the fiction!
And what did I learn..? I always feel from every experience I need to learn something I thought I learned a lot of about AI...which I did...but... I never fully appreciated why I was a good choice Only after work on the programs Getting an 'expert' gives you someone engaged and excited...and passionate If that 'expert' is someone that children can relate to they are likely to engage in the project In other words, that someone becomes a role model...
The Importance of Role Models Something I never appreciated I viewed my role models through their achievements so I didn't notice if they were male or female Had not really appreciated that this behaviour was embedded in my upbringing My parents only ever reinforced the importance of an education So my choice of engineering was never questioned I was surprised when I first heard 'isn't that odd for a girl?' I even had that reaction from teachers at my all girls school!!
The Importance of Role Models We (Engineering) are in serious trouble The current deficit is predicted to get worse not better Not enough children are showing an interest in STEM subjects Even worse, by the time girls (which is about 50% of children) reach age 15 most have lost interest Need to explore why that may be...
The Importance of Role Models Currently over 50% of teachers and parents admit that they have some gender bias when it comes to STEM subjects Have a think about that for a moment...
The Importance of Role Models Currently over 50% of teachers and parents admit that they have some gender bias when it comes to STEM subjects BBC program 'No More Boys and Girls' Research conducted by Dr Javid Abdelmoneim targets children under 7 Importance of changing perceptions Addressed issue of some of those stereotypes that parents and teachers reinforce
The Importance of Role Models The point of the program that really swung it for me was seeing how the children reacted to men doing 'women's jobs' and vice versa Amazing to see how quickly they engaged with it and accepted it as normal I didn t hear "Isn't that odd for a girl!"
What now..? I have to confess only until my work with the BBC did I fully appreciate the seriousness of this I have not usually been one to talk about women in engineering, I'd rather talk engineering but I hope by doing so I can be that role model Am I/are we too late for my target audience? Should 'we' - engineering as a profession be looking at influencing a much younger audience How do we get to that audience? We need to start influencing at early childhood through play That worked for me! As kids we took everything to bits...
What now..? Once passed the play we need to get them to get handson Lego are doing some good work in this area but we still need parents to get it to the girls CU have run summer workshops So we need to get rid of the stereotypes...for both parents and children We need to provide mentors This takes input from employers too releasing staff to do this work Allocating the time to do this work

The Reach out Programme Torin Spence - Skills Manager September 27, 2017 September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 23
What we are covering What is the MIRA Technology Institute The Reach out to employers September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 24
What is the MIRA Technology Institute Our vision is to be a global centre of excellence where industry leaders, engineers, technicians and business professionals come to develop industry essential skills, key to fuelling their career ambitions and their employers business success. The MIRA Technology Institute will produce specialist skills and qualifications that students and employers will aspire to achieve. We will constantly seek to create learning opportunities in the cutting edge technologies required to develop innovative, inspiring products which create wealth and improve transport in all of its forms for future generations. September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 25
The Beginning - A Growing need for Specialist Skills The MIRA Technology Park (MTP) started in At the outset it was estimated that it would create around 2,500 new jobs potentially 75% of these would require a specialist technical skill set Research activity commissioned by Leicestershire Local Enterprise partnership (LLEP) in 2012 looked in depth at the current and future skills needs of the developing Enterprise Zone and considered the availability and future pipeline for these skills The MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) concept was developed out of ongoing dialogue with LLEP and North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, it was then pitched to government, who encouraged a wider delivery than the MIRA Technology Park - to support the UK Automotive Sector and beyond. The opportunity to secure funding was identified by LLEP in their first Growth Deal, with 9.5M funding being secured to create and fit out the MTI. September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 26
The Founding Partners HORIBA MIRA will be delivering a wide range of short technical and nontechnical training courses with many leveraging MIRA s specialist subject matter expertise, knowledge & facilities Through its relationship with MIRA, NW&HC continues to adapt its outstanding technical engineering apprenticeships to focus on the demands of transport sector. Its BTEC and EAL accredited qualifications provide a robust skills base for students entering the sector and the MTI will facilitate the further development of a range of optional modules to ensure the future skills needs of the sector are met Coventry University will bring its relevant Masters level delivery through its full range of Technical Accreditation Scheme modules developed for JLR, as well as the full range of Automotive Degree Apprenticeships at level 6+ and the world s first Foundation Degree in Metrology. September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 27
The Founding Partners Underpinned by Loughborough s research in Low Carbon Vehicles and Transport Systems, MTI builds on its established relationship with MIRA and shared interests in identifying new technology applications and enables flexibility of delivery in technical emphasis, commitment, timing and accessibility for industry-based engineers, to overcome barriers to learning in relevant subjects at post-graduate level The University of Leicester, and in particular the Department of Engineering, has a long and successful track record of working with partners from automotive, defence, and avionics, in research and enterprise. MTI will develop these partnerships and feed expertise back into the training of the next generation of engineers working in these sectors. Other academic partners may be engaged as MTI develops including international partners September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 28
Defining the Mission Discovering and servicing national and international demand for skills training within the global automotive/transport sectors Identifying and enabling the development of specialist & core skills to support the continued growth of the technology cluster that is forming at MIRA Technology Park and beyond Developing apprentices through to qualified engineers, bridging the skills gap across the sector with relevant skills and qualifications Leveraging the expertise within the partner team and the technical facilities at HORIBA MIRA, MTI will develop a deep skills offering in Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) to serve the growing auto sector skills demand September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 29
Key Aspects of Delivery Course delivery can be grouped into 3 main categories: 1. Delivering the development of advanced skills in new areas of transport technology (in particular CAV but also including cyber security, functional safety, e-powertrain and others). The areas of technology will be informed by the requirements of the sector 2. Delivery of courses and pathways which would be delivered in an enhanced manner with elements of the training utilising the R&D assets we have within MTP (typically: RLDA, NVH, EMC, Safety, Climatic/Thermal Analysis, CFD/Aerodynamics, Durability, Vehicle Dynamics, Driver Training & Powertrain). Dependent upon the specific topics, courses will focus on systems and vehicle engineering as well as testing/development techniques as appropriate 3. Apprentice/ technician/ engineering and sector relevant skills training. These are almost certainly skills that are delivered at many locations around the country but geographic convenience, holistic offer and delivery quality is expected to drive demand for these courses through MTI September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 30
Delivery Styles Doctoral School PhDs MSc modules - Technical & Manag\t Masters Level Apprenticeships Bachelor s Degree & Degree Apprenticeships Bespoke and nonaccredited courses and sessions Higher level Apprenticeships HNCs & HNDs Advanced Apprenticeships & BTEC Qualifications September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 31
The Reach out Why Need employer engagement Targeted approach starting with MTP tenants Overview - Conversation, calls and s Detailed discussions - 1-1, small group or full presentations Contacted 18 Companies so far meetings 1 more booked 1 Group Presentation 3 more booked 7 still in conversation to arrange September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 32
The MTI Reach Out Team Terry Spall Torin Spence Paul Dancer Aidan Friend Thomas Steffen Alistair McEwan Commercial Director, HORIBA MIRA Ltd Skills Manager, HORIBA MIRA Ltd Strategic Lead for Technical Apprenticeships, North Warwickshire & South Leicestershire College Chief Operating Officer, Coventry University Group Senior Lecturer in Control, Loughborough University Associate Professor in Software Engineering and Real-time systems, University of Leicester September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 33
So What? Outcomes of initial discussions impacted and changed the internal design of the MTI Outcomes of discussions and meeting will feed into the Curriculum and change it Where needed new courses and/or modules will be created BASED ON EXPRESSED NEED Creating partnerships the MTI is EMPLOYER focused, not learner focused, the partnerships with employer = more repeat business. September 27, 2017 MIRA Technology Institute Specialist Skills for the Global Automotive Industry 34
The key differentiators for MTI Breadth MTI will offer a broad curriculum across a wide range of academic levels Depth Sufficiently focused to be able to deliver specialised skills training in new areas of automotive and transport technology, e.g. CAV Augmented training Leveraging the benefit of courses that engage MIRA s industry leading facilities and expertise Employer friendly - Delivery flexibility to allow maximum integration with and minimum disruption to the business and convenient location.
