1 KNES Primary School Year 5 Design and Technology Course Outline: Year Overview. In Term One, Year 5 pupils will learn about controlling movement with a cam mechanism as part of a simple toy. The purpose of the toy is negotiated with the children. They develop their designing skills by using information sources to generate ideas and formulate an understanding of how cam mechanisms can be used to produce movement. Children explore a range of full-size items of playground and make their own models. The following unit gives children opportunities to learn about framework structures and how to make them stable and able to support loads. They investigate used for the play, what the different parts of the are, and how they have been assembled. Through a range of focused tasks they develop their use of construction kits, combined with reclaimed. In Term Two, Year 5 pupils will study the design and construction of bridges and aqueducts as part of our theme of Water. They will study how forces act on a structure, how load is shared and which are the correct. Pupils will also be given the opportunity to build their own bridges. Year 5 pupils will also study the design and construction of Aztec pyramids as part of our theme of The Aztecs. They will again study how forces act on a structure, how load is shared and which are the correct. Pupils will also be given the opportunity to build their own pyramids. As part of our theme of Music we will be creating African drums and shoebox guitars. In Term Three, Year 5 students will use as a theme sports around the world. We will be creating Olympic rings in our study of the Olympic movement. We will also be creating gold medals and 3-d footballs to highlight aspects of sports around the world. As part of our study of the environment we will be using a variety of recycled such as woods, plastics, metals and creating our own Recycled art. Resources will include a variety of internet sites for each design project, as well as provided from both in the class, as well as those students bring from home, for all building projects. Homework will also be given daily and non-completion of homework will affect the student s final mark.
2 Class Rules: If a pupil is absent, it is his/her responsibility to get his/her homework assignment from a classmate and submit it when he/she returns. Homework left at home will be considered as not being done. If a test or deadline on an assignment is missed, the pupil will receive 0% unless he/she can provide a letter from a medical doctor to show the reason that he/she was not able to attend. It is the pupil s responsibility to come to class with the necessary books and other itemsthey are of no value sitting at home. Pupils are to use the washrooms before school and during scheduled breaks. They are not to be asking to leave class to use the washroom except in emergencies which should not occur often. Pupils are to line up immediately at the start of the day or at break time as soon as they hear the bell. No food and/or drink is allowed into class.
