2 Shaping the future together What does Kistler stand for? Today s world is dominated by conflicting trends: advances in technology and growing prosperity on the one hand but on the other, shortages of resources and pressure on the biosphere. As an enterprise that is fully aware of its responsibilities, the Kistler Group is committed to playing a key role in improving the quality of life and utilizing resources more efficiently. We help to shape megatrends such as autonomous driving and electromobility; our solutions ensure that resources are conserved, and the use of materials is optimized. Who are we, and what do we do? As an owner-managed company, we combine independence with business success: Kistler is the global market leader in dynamic measurement technology, with know-how at our fingertips in a multitude of industries and applications ranging from space and competitive sport to joining technology. Our claim: measure. analyze. innovate. captures our whole approach in three words: we don t just measure we analyze as well. Raw data is transformed into valuable information about what can be improved in each individual process and how: the key that opens the door to innovation for our customers. Over the last two decades, Kistler has developed into a multi-faceted group of companies with a truly global presence, a vast spectrum of activities and a track record of outstanding success stories. This sustained success tells us that the mission we are pursuing is the right one: to deploy high-caliber measurement technology as the means of delivering innovations, advancing new technologies and pushing the limits of what is feasible. Join us on this journey through the varied world of the Kistler Group: as you read these pages, you will learn about our products, technologies and services, you will come to understand our vision and our strategy, and you will get to know the people who drive our success. How will Kistler advance in the coming years? From our origins in Switzerland, we have evolved into a corporation with over employ ees across the globe and we no longer merely supply components, but complete inte grated solutions. Right now, we are embarking on the next step: our organization will become more global and more digitalized, but we shall still keep our feet firmly on the ground. Main taining competitive edge in the digital era also means molding an agile, decentralized organization that can quickly adapt to new technologies and business models and, above all, to customers requirements. What can you expect at Kistler? No matter whether you join our production operations, our management, or our development team: you ll find that measurement technology is our shared passion. 3 4 Electromobility for travel in tomorrow s world The electrification of the automobile is in full swing and powertrains, too, are now evolving towards fully electrical operation. Test stands for electric vehicle motors, measurement and assembly technology for battery manufacture, and integrated turnkey production lines for modular, intelligent production of vehicle components: in all these ways and more, the Kistler Group already plays a major part in the ongoing development of the automobile. And the trend is upwards. Driverless travel what will it be like? Sooner or later, vehicles that travel from place to place without human involvement will become a reality. The design of today s automobiles still focuses heavily on the driver, whereas attributes such as acoustics, engine smoothness, safety and connectivity will become more critical in the future. Kistler is continuing to develop diverse measurement applications for this area so that we can work with manufacturers as a dedicated partner, ensuring that their vehicles remain reliable as the transformation proceeds. Industry 4.0 means the digitalization of production With its process monitoring and control systems, the Kistler Group is a hands-on participant in the digital transformation of industry: dynamic measurement technology delivers valuable data to optimize manufacturing processes so that production becomes more efficient and more individual. Countless small steps still lie ahead of us before this goal is attained. But the vision is clear: one continuous value chain, from sensor to cloud. Conserving resources and cutting emissions How does measurement technology help to protect the environment? By helping us to see more and understand better: so processes can be optimally designed and adjusted more precisely for better results, with less effort and expense. Throughout industry, resources are being used more efficiently thanks to solutions by Kistler for engines and generators, in component joining processes, welding and many other assembly operations. Ideas for tomorrow s world The pace of change in the 21st century is constantly accelerating, driven by megatrends such as autonomous and electrified vehicles, the digital revolution and the preservation of both the natural and built environments. We play a decisive part in shaping these trends, and we develop responses to the challenges of our era no matter how small, no matter how large thanks to a host of highly specialized applications. As vehicles become more autonomous, the role of their occupants is changing: what shall we do while we are being transported in the future? And how can we protect ourselves against accidents while we are busy with activities such as surfing the web? Kistler has developed the THOR dummy (Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint): a new, flexible and efficient aid to developing safe vehicles especially those powered by innovative concepts for autonomy and electrification. Powertrains are undergoing equally revolutionary changes: combustion engines are gradually being replaced by hybrid engines and electric motors. We have responded to this trend by de veloping KiBox 2: the future-oriented upgrade to our successful KiBox for efficient combustion engines. In the future, this measurement system will also be used to analyze and optimize hybrid and electric powertrains: because their structure is more complex, they need more advanced measurement expertise. Advancing towards intelligent, networked production Industry 4.0 holds out the promise of needs-oriented production of individualized products, with maximum networking of the entire value chain. A fully automated Smart Factory requires a high level of transparency in order to implement efficient control. This calls not only for high-performance sensors in the production line, but also for appropriate software environments that guarantee optimum control of the processes. KiMES, Kistler s comprehensive Manufacturing Execution System, will step up networking of the production infrastructure while ensuring integrated quality assurance and improved products starting out in the plastics industry, and embracing other sectors over time. As just one of many benefits, valuable raw materials can be saved by reducing scrap. Networking the management and production levels can improve the utilization of resources. Protecting the environment and conserving resources Even simple assembly processes harbor enormous potential, as our electromechanical joining systems show: they are more efficient and accurate than conventional hydraulic or pneumatic systems, so they consume significantly less energy. We sold well over of these systems across the globe in That adds up to energy savings of 17 gigawatt hours equivalent to the energy consumed by households or a town of inhabitants! Lightweight construction is an equally attractive sector: vehicles and aircraft manufactured from innovative composites weigh less, so they travel at lower cost but with undiminished stability. Injection molding processes for composites are more complex, but our ComoNeo process monitoring system makes sure that the quality of the products is right and defective parts are avoided. The built environment, too, benefits from the targeted deployment of measurement equipment: thanks to our Weigh In Motion (WIM) technology, automated weighing systems for roads, bridges and other sensitive traffic infrastructures help to prevent accidents, reduce loads and ensure proper scheduling of maintenance work. Fully automated weight measurements of vehicles while they are in motion enable operators to monitor traffic accurately with the minimum of outlay. 5

5 Agile and close to our customers Valentin Vogt Member of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Burckhardt Compression Holding AG, President of the Swiss Employers Association Rolf Sonderegger CEO, Delegate of the Board of Directors Lino Guzzella Member of the Board of Directors, former President of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) Ursula Oesterle Member of the Board of Directors, Member of the Board of Silicon Valley Innovation Executives As a dedicated partner for diverse industrial sectors such as automobile production, electronics and medical technology, we frequently operate in niches that are constantly evolving. This is why we opt for a scalable organizational structure that enables us to respond rapidly to new requirements from customers. The Board of Directors of the Kistler Group Our constant growth in recent years confirms that this is the right approach. Our structure comprises the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, the company s three central Divisions, and national organizations in three regions: the Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific. The benefits: we are close to our customers and at the same time, we are flexible enough to react promptly to the accelerating pace of change in the business world and society in general. Our locations are geared to different aspects of our business Sales, Tech, Competence, Production and Support Centers ensuring that expertise is concentrated and always within easy reach of our customers. Our diverse measurement technologies are focused within the three Divisions: Automotive Research & Test, Industrial Process Control, and Sensor Technology. Each Division comprises several Strategic Business Fields, or SBFs for short. The Kistler Group currently has 18 SBFs and the number is growing. In addition, our Board of Directors covers areas of expertise that have a long-term impact on our company s evolution: universities and research, software and digitalization, and of course industry as such. But the scope of Corporate Governance is much wider than this: recognized principles and standards such as the Swiss Code of Best Practice guarantee that our responsibilities and our own interests are kept in the proper balance as we go about our day-to-day business. Implementation expertise thanks to high vertical production integration As a provider of integrated solutions, Kistler brings development, production, sales and service for over products together under one roof. The value chain comprises all the steps in our business process: development of sensors, electronics and software, design, prototype construction, installation and commissioning, training for employees, and many additional services. But: crystals are the starting point for everything. To ensure our independence from suppliers and drive development ahead, Kistler has developed its own crystals since 1998 with great success. We have consistently optimized the process over the years, culminating in the development of PiezoStar: crystals with ex ceptional performance that can withstand temperatures of up to 700 Celsius without losing their precision. Digitalization harbors enormous opportunities, both within our company and in the outside world and our objective is to exploit them creatively. That s why digitalization is at the very top of Kistler s agenda not merely in terms of products and services, but also for our entire business. Claudio Valeri Head of Production and Logistics 8 9

6 From component manufacturer to comprehensive solution provider As pioneers of piezoelectric measurement technology, we have garnered more than six decades of application experience in countless industrial sectors. Over the last 20 years, we have evolved from a product supplier into a provider of systems and solutions. The next transformation is already in full swing: digitalization is set to change our company yet again. Strategic acquisitions have played a substantial part in the ongoing expansion of our expertise and the opportunities for applying it. In addition to piezoelectric, piezoresistive and strain gage sensors, we can now benefit from the advantages of optical measurement systems. As digitalization proceeds, Kistler is developing into an information provider: this gives us the ability to create value through software, and open up new business opportunities for our customers with big data, data mining, and information-as-a-service. Software development is set to become even more important in the future not least as the means of linking a company s production level directly to its management level. We have responded by establishing a Competence Center in Aachen (Germany) to focus on production control and management systems, and to continue driving these synergies ahead. Making processes transparent Interlinking all systems at every different level as consistently as possible, and developing adequate data management: these are the challenges that will occupy us in the coming years. Even today, customers are already benefiting from the convergence of acquired process and quality data in extensive databases opening the way to transparency and traceability, in-depth analyses and continuous process improvements that ultimately add up to hard cash. But: how does innovation actually come about? At Kistler, a process we have set up ourselves we call it the Innovation Machine ensures that progress never comes to a standstill. As we follow technological and social megatrends, we constantly develop new applications, check out acquisitions and evolve interdisciplinary approaches. The focus is always on the same questions: how can we become even better? How can we provide stronger support for our customers, and generate even more added value for them? Innovation used to be the brainchild of individuals working alone but nowadays, it is a plannable process underpinned by teamwork Components Solutions Systems 2020 Information 11

7 A look back in time We have achieved the success we enjoy today because in our past, we have always stood on the shoulders of giants, as Isaac Newton said. Component manufacturer from 1959 onwards 1959 To drive global sales ahead, Hans Conrad Sonderegger establishes Kistler Instrumente AG in Winterthur, Switzerland. For the first time, piezoelectric measuring sensors are manufactured industrially and sold professionally. How the company has grown The founding fathers of Kistler Instrumente AG: Hans Conrad Sonderegger and Walter P. Kistler The Kistler company can look back on a success story spanning over 60 years. Its beginnings date back to 1950, when Walter P. Kistler and Hans Conrad Sonderegger achieved their breakthrough with the development of the charge amplifier.
