Why ARTEMIS? ARTEMIS - Advanced Research & Technology for Embedded Intelligence in Systems is the Technology Platform for Embedded Systems. The term Embedded Systems describes electronic products, equipment or more complex systems, where the embedded computing devices are not visible from the outside and are generally inaccessible by the user.
Why ARTEMIS? Embedded Intelligence challenges are: In business : Industry under huge competitive pressure In technology : Complexity becomes unmanageable, power consumption, interoperability, security, quality.... Structural : fragmented EU landscape, skills gap, standards, certification and open source policies, innovation environment,
Stage 1: Getting the Stakeholders together : Building Artemis Industrial support 9 of the 25 top-ranked EU companies are members of the ARTEMIS Board spending 31 b /y in R&D (30% of total R&D of TOP 500 EU companies)
The Artemis European Technology Platform ARTEMIS case Aim and Scope Develop and drive a joint European vision and strategy on Embedded Systems with societal and economical consequences Competitiveness of most industry sectors will rely on embedded systems innovation capability Embedded systems technologies become critically important in rebalancing productivity growth in Europe, the US and Asia Security, safety, health, and well-being in our society will increasingly depend on embedded systems technologies Align fragmented R&D efforts in the ERA along a common strategic agenda at Community, intergovernmental and national levels
The Artemis Strategic Agenda development A strategy to win : Application Drivers to respond to business needs Public infrastructure Healthcare Government Education Private spaces Industrial Nomadic Home Nomadic environments ARTEMIS strategy is to establish common technology to support the development of high value-added Embedded Systems for multiple application contexts.
Technology challenges The Technology domains and challenges
The Artemis Strategic Agenda Technology challenges Foundational science & technology research To generate new solutions to recognized problems and explore the unknown so that a steady flow of innovative ideas in the field of novel Embedded Systems is maintained: Bridge physics and computing Optimal use of time, space, energy and material properties Hard real-time control Truly novel computing architectures Modular, heterogeneous, composable, self-organising, adaptive systems Dependability and security Correct-by-construction design A distinction is made between inquiry-driven foundational research and targeted foundational research. ARTEMIS research aims at establishing a scientific and technologic basis for embedded systems design in Europe
The Artemis Strategic Agenda Concrete Objectives and Targets to be attained by % of embedded systems deploy Artemis results worldwide Twice as many SMEs engage in embedded systems supply chain Realise an integrated chain of European-sourced tools, to support development of embedded systems Generate at least 5 radical innovations, comparable to µ-processor, dsp, software radio, etc. Double the number of patents Reduce cost of system design by 50% Achieve 50% reduction in development cycles Manage complexity increase of 100% with 20% effort reduction Reduce by 50% the effort for re-validation and re-certification Achieve cross-sector reuse ARTEMIS imposes objectives that really matter
Stage 2 :The ARTEMIS Strategic Agenda ARTEMIS SRA Holistic vision founded on Open Innovation ARTEMIS SRA assumes an inclusive approach : The ARTEMIS vision and targets A strategy The Research Agenda itself And how to make it Happen by Coordinating the European Research Priorities, And creating an ARTEMIS Innovation environment
