Dialogue with the CEO Saad Ali Al-Shuwaib Chief Executive Officer I would like to congratulate you with the New Year which is just around the corner. May God make it a prosperous year for Kuwait and its oil sector, albeit with international changes in many economies which, in turn, influence the growth of the world economy linked with the economies of oil producing countries. These countries have faced many challenges: they have met them head-on with wise policies and a concise vision. Today, they face new challenges that require sustained collaboration to effectively develop an economic fiscal strategy for the upcoming period -- one that takes into account the interests of oil producing countries, and their common future. There is no doubt that oil producing countries not only need to be involved but also this extends to oil corporations who also have the responsibility to enhance their resources as they prepare for future growth. Needless to say, we also require oil sector employees painstaking efforts to hold on to recent gains achieved in recent years: some of those efforts include constant improvement in oil sector working styles resulting in budget surplus, upgrading and developing oil facilities in line with our cumulative export/ production capacity, developing new markets which depend on Kuwait crude oil to a large extent, and executing vital new enterprises KPC aims to develop in east asian countries such as China, India, and Vietnam. All of this has been accomplished because of your sincere efforts, your vision and your aspiration for a better future for Kuwait and the oil sector -- which is what we have perceived from you. Our ambitions and hopes in the New Year look to oil sector employee s commitment and devotion to continue to accomplish even more in the coming days ahead.

E V E N T S With a cost of 17 million K.D and overall production of 14,000 cubic meter of gas Al-Olaim inaugurates the liquid gas plant in Al-Shoaiba Minister Al-Olaim inaugurates the liquid gas plant with Al-Shuwaib, KPC CEO and Nabil Buresli On Thursday, 4 December 2008, Eng. Mohammed Al-Olaim, Oil, Water and Electricity minister and KPC Chairman of the board inaugurated a gas liquidizing plant for 6 underground tanks located in Al-Shoaiba industrial area. Expected cost for the plant is 17 million KWD for overall production of 14,000 cubic meters of gas. In his address, Al-Olaim remarked: This enterprise is considered a great leap forward in Kuwait s gas industry and it is a luminous mark in KOTC history. I have no doubt that all oil sector employees seek to support Kuwait s growth and are working towards improved energy exploration and production to guarantee the highest oil project returns. This project can be added to the oil sector accomplishments. It is considered a role model to follow in petroleum projects in general and in the liquid gas industry in particular. He added: This plant reinforces Kuwait s gas strategic reserve for its 2020 strategy. It is the fruit of sincere mutual collaboration between oil sector workers.
Nabil Buresli, KOTC Chairman of the board and Managing Director, stated: The project cost was 17 million KWD spent over 2 years and 7 months to establish this monumental enterprise. E V E N T S Sa ad Al-Shuwaib, KPC CEO said: This project will ensure non-stop gas supplies for consumers. We have started the second phase of this project at a cost of 42 million KWD which will make Kuwait a gas producing country. He clarified: Phase one will raise the reserves according to the local consumption rate-from 3 to 30 days while phase two will double the reserves to 60 days following KPC s planned schedule due to end in He explained further: KPC continues to revise all its local projects according to the circumstances. It executes the ones that meet urgent needs. There are projects that KPC is committed to wrap-up on schedule, whereas there are others of less importance right at the moment. Al-Olaim receives a souvenir from Nabil Buresli KPC is studying these projects and how they impact 2020 and 2030 strategies. With raw material costs currently low, we must seize the opportunity to execute more projects. He explained further details: The project aims to store gas underground in 6 tanks with an overall 14,000 cubic meter capacity which equals 7,200 tons of liquid gas. This plant storage technique is the safest, most environmentally-effective in the industry.. The project includes a pumping station and a tanker-filling station together with other administrative and technical facilities. This plant uses top-notch technology to manage fully-automated functional operations by remote control and monitoring devices. He added that providing gas for local consumption requires dedicating a budget of 12 million KWD to build a gas cylinder filling plant. For this other project, the municipality has delivered over the designated land which, in turn, will be handed to the contractor next year.
E V E N T S KPC petroleum complex backdrop to Al-Adha Eid Al-Shuwaib and Shiekh Al-Khalid recieving Al-Adha Eid congratulators On Sunday, 14 December 2008, Sa ad Al-Shuwaib, KPC CEO received employees celebrating Al-Adha at KPC headquarters. where he also took the opportunity to congratulate KPC employees who had recently performed the Hajj. Managing Directors as well as some KPC leaders attended the Al-Adha family-like atmosphere affirming senior management on-going commitment to strengthen KPC communication policies and face-to-face interactions with KPC employees.
Decision Maker s Conference focuses on public Talal Al-Khalid: KPC waives 4411 sq.km. for housing In the opening address of the Decision Maker s Conference held recently at Al-Raya Hall on 21 December 2008, Sheikh Talal Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, Managing Director Governmental, Parliament, Public and Media Relations affirmed how eager the oil sector is to develop the best projects in the public interest. Sheikh Talal Al-Sabah commented: The oil sector is an indivisible part of the State of Kuwait which has prompted KOC, as one of KPC subsidiaries, to develop a landwaiving policy. In four stages, KOC gave up a total of 4411 square kilometers to the Ministry of Housing and Municipality as well as waived four cities-- Jabir Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Sa ad Al-Abdullah, Al- Talae and Al-Sabia--to government authorities. Al-Sabah clarified issues surrounding the West Hadia location: The Municipal Council assigned the location without coordination with KOC which, in turn, held several meetings with the Housing Care Public Corporation to outline both technical and safety reasons that prevent KOC from waiving this particular location. First, vital oil lines pass through the area on their way from the northern tankers to the northern dock and the refineries. Second, northern power plant feeding lines, that is Eastern/ Western Doha, Al-Shuwaik, and Al-Sabia lines, exist in this location. If there is a heavy oil spill or gas explosion, the effective damage of these lines can encompass an area of approximately one kilometer in length. Third, West Hadia is low in elevation and its location on the eastern side of the northern tanker yard can have a catastrophic impact in the event of oil spills. Last, Western Hadia is one of the areas dedicated to KOC future 2020 strategic plans which will soon start with the construction of five lines from the northern tankers to Abu Halifa s northern dock. The conference was held under the patronage of the Minister of Commerce and Industry. Shiekh Talal and Minister Bakir during the conference opening E V E N T S KPC Participates in 2 nd Jobs Fair Administrative Science Students Association A memorial photo for Dr. Modi Al-Hmod In a bid to foster young people s capabilities, KPC took part in the 2 nd Jobs Fair organized by the Administrative Science Students Association which was held on Sunday, 23 November It was patronized by Dr. Modi Al-Hmood, state Minister of Housing and Administrative Development. The fair is considered to be important as every year the Association offers substantial work/career opportunities for Kuwait University students in the government and private sectors. This year 28 government organizations were involved: two financial seminars were presented by Ayman Bodi, Chairman of the Board, Kuwait Stock Market House and Nasser Al-Miri, CEO of Nour Investment firm.
E V E N T S KPC honors distinguished graduates Petroleum and Engineering Faculty class The Diamond Hall of the Sheraton 4 Points Hotel Kuwait provided the perfect backdrop for the annual ceremony to recognize recent graduates of the University of Kuwait s Engineering and Petroleum Faculty. In his address to the audience, Dr. Tahir Al-Sahaf, Dean of the Engineering Faculty praised KPC continued sponsorship of student graduates especially those students from the Petroleum and Engineering Faculty. Sheikh Talal Al-Sabah, Managing Director Governmental, Parliament, Public and Media Relations also addressed the graduate audience: "It is a great delight for me to participate with you on this occasion as the Faculty of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University honors its outstanding students. It is a memorable occasion, a symbol of the sustained effort and hard work exerted during your long years of study. Sheikh Talal commended faculty professors of doctors, engineers and managers who worked tirelessly to use their combined skills and capabilities to convey a message about the value of engineering science to build a nation. He expressed his admiration to the families who supported their children in reaching their educational dreams and goals -- a position that has made the State of Kuwait justly proud. Doha Mohammad Al-Ramadan, a student from the Industrial Engineering Department gave the distinguished graduate address. Al-Ramadan applauded KPC's social role and its continued support for top faculty graduates. During the ceremony, Al-Shuwaib welcomed everyone commend- KPC CEO opens the first photography contest First place: Solaiman Al-Sajari ing them on their enthusiasm and the range of gifted photographers across the oil sector. He mentioned that a photographer is one of the happiest people alive as they have the potential to see beauty in everything while observing the world from their own distinctive perspective. As the ceremony drew to a close, Mariam Mohammad Al-Rashid, Contest Supervisor thanked Nafoot team members and the contributors to the contest s success. Second place: Taiseer Al-Hamad Third place: Hiba Ismael
I N T H I S I S S U E Captain Awad Saeed: KPC supported GCC Marine Day Memorial photo for Export Operations work team with media specialists KPC Newsletter met recently with Captain Awad Saeed, KPC Environment & Oil Spill Response Manager to cast light on KPC s vital role in preserving the marine environment on the occasion of GCC Unified Marine Day. On Thursday 27 November in Abu Halifa, this important environmental event was launched by KOC s Marine Export Operations Group in association with with Emirates Dive Society and the UN Environmental Programs. How did the idea of GCC Unified Marine Day arise? In 2005, KOC senior management adopted the company Dive Team formed by volunteering youth to safeguard Kuwait s marine environment. The team created a KOC marine protected area of 54,000 sq. meters inaugurated by the former Oil Minister in September During this time, the KOC Dive Team participated in other GCC environmental events including clean up events along the UAE shoreline, and it was here that they suggested the idea to synchronize all such activities in GCC countries. The Dive Team presented their idea to KOC senior management, which was adopted: now this is the second year for GCC Marine Day supported by KPC and its subsidiaries to preserve the environment. What's KPC role in this event? KPC provided media coverage in cooperation with KPC s Media Department in order to publish news of the event in print as well as electronic newsletters. We hope this kind of support will encourage GCC Marine Day organizers and participants. How do KPC and KOC work together? All organization was done by KOC Export and Marine Operations and other KOC departments. KPC supports these efforts with its own attendance and participation: environmental issues such as these require involvement and co-operation across the entire company. It's inadequate for the KPC Environment Department to be invited
and to refrain from participation under the pretence that it conflicts the oil companies roles. Personally, I believe that participation is so important: not participating in this day would raise serious doubts about KPC s long-term environmental commitment. What are the gains of a one-day activity? Quality is superior to quantity. I believe that the objectives for this one day event were fulfilled: youth brings about change and we are communicating with an important society segment of young people and pupils. Consequently, public/private schools of education ministry as well as special needs schools arrived in the early morning hours. On this note, I'd like to thank all teachers who supported student participation in this day s activities and for integrating this event into their school programs. Over and above this, there's also another benefit which raises oil sector employee environmental awareness and responsibilities. Furthermore, KOC has evaluated Marine Day activities and programs which will impact positively on next year s plans and organization. Media communication remains weak, what is your comment? I believe and this is a personal perspective that may not reflect the reality of the situation -- that the oil sector stands behind this environmental commitment. We believe our efforts stem from the nature of our work and our sociel responsibility. For example, drivers along the Fahaheel highway can see the considerable effort exerted by KNPC to place trash bins one kilometre apart the entire length of the road. Small details can Captain Awad Saeed receives a souvenir from KOC make a huge impact: it s these kinds of details that the media needs to cover to urge everyone to preserve our environment in everything they do. There are many sides to how KPC and its subsidiaries communicate with society but as I mentioned before, the very nature of our work in the oil sector may give the wrong impression. Here the media should actively shed further light on KPC and its subsidiaries participation and sponsorship of social issues in the wider community. I N T H I S I S S U E
E V E N T S 10 KPC opens 8 th Spring Camp Invited by the KPC PR Department, KPC employees attended the opening of the 8th spring camp held on the third day of Al- Adha Eid at the Al-Jalea' camp grounds. The camp was packed with employees and their families who took the opportunity to enjoy Eid vacation and the mild weather to spend a congenial day among colleagues Major General Thabit Al-Mohana, Minister of Interior Assistant Undersecretary for Public Security, accompanied by a number of security leaders, also visited KPC s camp. Ali Murad, KPC Manager Public Relations Department led a tour to the facilities dedicated to KPC employees. He answered questions regarding the challenges faced opening the camp. After his visit, Major Al-Mohana commended KPC efforts to maintain spring camp. He mentioned that the Interior Ministry provided a security checkpoint in Al-Jalea' to guarantee camper s safety in case of emergencies. Prior to the actual construction of the spring camp itself, Jasem Jamaan, KPC Media Relations
E V E N T S 11 coordinator outlined some of its history -- how the camp was constructed after putting forward tenders and how entertainment parties provided buffets throughout the camp itself. The camp s design includes two large tents for parties and buffets, tents designed to host visitors as well as prayer tents (for women and men). There is also a special section dedicated to the traditional Kuwaiti gathering known as (Al-Arish). The 8 th spring camp also provided special entertainment programs and educational contests for its guests. Top priority continues with safety and security Jasem Jamaan mentioned that KPC's PR Department ensures a safe secure environment for campers and their families. KPC security maintain the camp's gates confining entry for KPC employees and their families: they also provide an on site ambulance with a highlytrained crew from Al-Ahmadi hospital.
E V E N T S 12 Global Financial Directions: Global Finance in a Rapidly-Changing World Finance Minister opens international conference On December 2008 Mustafa Al-Shamali, Finance minister for Kuwait opened the 3 rd international conference Global Financial Directions in the Administrative Science Faculty, Kuwait University attended by dignitaries as well as 200 academics and researchers from nine Arab and other countries. Al-Shamali pointed out that international financial changes continue to be watched closely throughout the global community: these changes are influencing all countries worldwide, and are threatening to drive major economies towards Al-Shamali in KPC booth depression because of the current financial crisis. In turn, this crisis may extend to all human activities such as food, housing, real estate financing and international trade as well as all kinds of industries including the petrochemical industries, among others, that rely on energy as their main source of revenue. He also alluded to some of the main reasons behind the global financial crisis, its effects and the means to overcome it. Accompanied by the vice-prime minister, Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Al-Sabah and the conference president Dr. Rashid Al-Ajami, Dean, Administrative Science Faculty, the Finance minister together with the Foreign minister opened the conference exhibition which was attended by KPC as well as key financial companies. A handicraft fair (traditional culture) provided insights on a vital segment of Kuwait's history. The conference and exhibition was organized under the patronage of the Prime Minister HH Sheikh Naser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah and KPC involvement. 15 research papers were presented at this year s conference. In assuarance to its social rule KPC cooperates in Al-Salam school environmental presentation A recent environmental seminar was held in the suburb of Al-Salam, west of Al-Surra to explain to students at Al-Salam elementary and intermediate school what environmental development and preservation is, and how it directly affects their lives. This event held in collaboration with school management was part of KPC s wider strategy to instill environmental awareness in Kuwait s next generation of young people. KPC s Nora Buqrais participated together with selected school teachers. Buqrais chose a grade 5 student to help with the pre- sentation about what is the best way to think environmentally at school, work, and at home. Issues concerning marine environmental pollution during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait were discussed. At the close of the presentation, gifts were presented on behalf of KPC to school teachers and students.
General instructions for camping fans Despite low temperatures and cold weather, winter is one of the most loved seasons for many. Camping and trips fans leave all luxury and rest means behind and head to the deserts to enjoy fresh air, nature, green landscapes, sand and hunting. On this basis, KPC News saw it was necessary to give a number of safety tips to KPC employees to avoid any unpleasant surprises that may disturb their trip. Trip basics These are represented in a number of necessaries that must be taken care of before commencing the trip: First: the presence of a first aid kit that includes sterilized lawn, antiseptics, bands and cold medicine. In addition, a satellite based mobile must be equipped since other phones may not be functional in case of accidents. A GPS device is a must too. Second: a water tank for trip usage. Washing and drinking water containers must be also equipped. Camping trips also require the presence of a cooking gas, Camping necessities lighter, gas/diesel container, hand light, tug wire, rugs, coal, plastic cups/plates, trash bag, roasting jack and napkins. Tents The Tents are the most important camping elements. Tents setting require posts, pegs, cushions, generator, lamp, lamps wire. H E A L T H 13 Tents setting To avoid any risks during the trip, several instructions must be followed when setting a tent: 1. Checking the tent parts to avoid any accidents. 2. Cleaning the ground from pointy objects, stones, or glass pieces. 3. Using a piece of wood under the tent posts if the ground is of sand nature to assure its stability. 4. Using iron pegs if the ground is solid. 5. Setting the tent far away from places that may be easily put on fire like dry plants areas. 6. Allowing a 2 meter peg-free space to pass between the tents. 7. Set the tent so its back faces wind direction. 8. Avoid spraying pesticides on tents sides because it consists of chemical substances that affect the tent material and hence, decrease its resistance. 9. Avoid setting your tent under power lines. 10. Providing the camp with a 220 to 240 volt transformer to every tent if there are many generators (these must be 10 meters far from the tents). 11. Supplying ashtrays for smokers. 12. Don't hang fuel-dependant lights from tent top. 13. Don't approach valleys during rain fall or set your tent there! 14. Don't swim in valleys as they contain mud which obstructs movement and may cause drowning.
H O B B Y 14 Mahmoud Dallah: Sport walking is simple and it strengthens the immune system Mahmoud Dallah Walking enthusiasts unite! The wide-spread sport of walking includes everyone young and old. Walking has so many benefits that KPC Newsletter decided to investigate this sport further. KPC Newsletter met with Mahmoud Dallah, KPC Services Department who is a walking enthusiast. Mr. Dallah stressed how important sport walking is in his own life as it can reduce heart disease and blood clots. Moreover, sport walking protects the immune system while, at the same time, it brings a sense of renewed vitality and energy. Can you give us more insight into walking? I started walking about 5 years ago. Walking is such a simple easy sport to do even for people who feel unwell. Walking can be con- templative and delightful especially if you choose to practice it along the sea wall or amongst the gardens. Nature's beauty reminds us again of the Creator's ability and we can thank him for this gift and insight. What encouraged you to walk? The nature of work pushed me to take up walking. Walking always makes me feel alive. Walking also stimulates the secretion of serotonin which relaxes the body and improves your frame of mind. Are there any special conditions to exercise walking? Any hobby or sport, no matter how simple it is, requires that you meet several conditions before you begin so you can benefit fully from it. For example, when walking, doctors encourage walkers to do it without stopping unless you feel fatigued and unable to continue. There are certain simple techniques to walking. Walk in wide strides with your arms swinging freely at your sides. Keep your back straight and your abdomen tucked in. Don t forget how your feet hit the pavement: the metatarsus must touch the surface before your heel and toes. Walk regularly and over time gradually extend how long and how fast you walk. Experts suggest that you walk on an empty stomach as blood circulation is in full swing in the digestive system after eating. Therefore it s best to walk in the early morning, if you can, or 3 hours after eating. Are there any age limitations? Walking spans the entire age spectrum. Its side benefits are well known with increased health and agility that positively reflects on how you feel. Some researches recommend that people over 40 should stop immediately if they feel tired. Walking is a way of life that can be done every day or, at least, 3-4 times a week. What do you feel after you finish walking? I feel a great both physically and mentally. For me, walking is the second most important issue after prayer. Usually I walk alone but sometimes my colleagues join me. It's so important to perform sports regularly: it is important to have a daily or weekly schedule to practice your favorite sport and, of course, that includes walking.
Wael Al-Ali: Scientific certificates provide solid ground to face challenges: I aspire to more scientific and personal development Wael Al-Ali The Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said: "Two seekers aren't ever satisfied: money and science seekers." Our guest for this issue is a person whose ambition spurred him to improve his skills and capabilities in his own accounting specialty. Wael Al-Ali went on to acquire his first vocational certificate ABA, i.e. Accredited Business Accountant. KPC News met recently with Wael Al-Ali who confirmed how important it is to have international accredited accounting certificates that provide a sure foundation to tackle work challenges. These kinds of important accreditations increase accountant s abilities raising their practical as well as administrative skills. What do you do as a career and what drove you to obtain your ABA certificate? I first began to work in the KPC Compensation Department as a first analyzer for investments and computations within their Special Fund system. I joined KPC just six months ago from the General Investment Authority. Before that, I used to work for the Public Institution for Public Security (PIPS) where I became auditor after working for 10 years. Wael Al-Ali continued: My current roles and responsibilities focus on investment and computational aspects of this special fund. What is distinctive about this system for oil sector workers is that it offers supplemental insurance coverage provided by PIPS in key areas of disability, aging or death. Adherence to Allah s saying prompted me to attain my ABA certificate: Are those equal, those who know and those who don't know? as well as the Prophet (PBUH): pursue knowledge even if it is in China." Can you tell us more specifically about the ABA certificate? The ABA certificate is an accounting vocational certificate which is designed to measure and test accountant s capabilities helping them understand as well as apply this knowledge within international financial reports standards. There are 39 various sophisticated standards -- most books are substantial in size consisting of approximately 350 pages. To attain this certificate, an accountant must correctly answer 75 out of 100 questions in this field. Furthermore, American references are used which are sent from the United States to approved institutes in Kuwait. Results announcements and correcting these tests are completely computerized in the U.S.A. To obtain your certificate what was your approach to your studies? Hard work combined with effective time management paved the way for my success. Every day I dedicated 1-2 hours for revision one month prior to the actual test. Of special importance was how to use the actual test time in the best possible way as the test takes more than two hours. Can you explain why it is so important for accountants to acquire a vocational certificate? Vocational certificates are a significant milestone in any accountant s career. These certificates do two things: they equip accountants with important benchmarks, a continuous development means in accounting science and modern theories to address a diverse range of financial cases and circumstances, in particular, and trade and management, in general. Moreover, certificates improve an accountant s levels of expertise and capabilities. Accountants need these necessary skills and knowledge to move forward in their careers. Taking this background into consideration, I encourage my fellow accountants as well as trade and management province workers, in general, to strengthen their current skills by attaining these certificates. Are there other kinds of vocational certificates? There are several certificates such as CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), CMA (Certified Management Accountant), CFA (Certified Management Accountant) and ABA (Accredited Business Accountant). What value was this accreditation for you? Most importantly, once I attained this certification I was able to better serve my country and homeland which has given me so much. Also attaining specialized scientific certificates increases your capabilities and level of knowledge within your own chosen career path. How do you feel about obtaining this certificate? I am filled with joy and happiness as this is my first vocational certificate since I received my academic qualifications which include an undergraduate degree in finance, accounting major from Kuwait University and a MBSc from Europe as well as other different training courses. What are your future aspirations? And do they include other certificates? As a person deeply interested in the wider field of science, I seek further levels of excellence and self-development which can only happen if I receive more specialized training and certification. Of course, these plans go side-by-side with more practical experience at KPC which is considered to have an institute of financial and administrative systems on its own. ACHIEVEMENTS 15
