06 07 Case study: new machine manufacturing solution Client Challenge Proserv was approached by a leading biscuit manufacturer to provide a solution for their tea cake biscuit product line. Their depositor and conveyor system offered eight production units per row and suffered reliability issues, low production performance and high waste output. Solution The client s system required an upgrade. Proserv designed and manufactured a wider conveyor and a new 16 station mallow depositor head with state of the art Siemens touch screen control and new compact Mitsubishi drive technology. The new design seamlessly integrated with the existing automation system and the manufacturer has seen a vastly increased volume and improved throughput figures for the product in a significantly reduced amount of time. The system now produces 480 tea cakes per minute, 28,800 per hour and 691,200 per day, equating to almost five million per week. The machine runs 24 hours a day and product waste has been reduced to less than one percent of total production, an increase of over 300 percent on products produced on a weekly basis. Conclusion By implementing an ingeniously simple design that complimented an existing system Proserv has manufactured and delivered an efficient state of the art system for the client at their manufacturing plant in Uddingston. Benefits Increased productivity outputs and less waste State of the art touch screen Siemens controls and compact Mitsubishi drive technology for ease of operation Less risk of downtime due to the availability of real time data Significant reduction in maintenance due to the new design features I am delighted with the increase in productivity and reduction in waste since the installation of the new system. Proserv has delivered a reliable and seamless design that we are all thrilled with, and we look forward to working with them on future product line improvements. Case study: aftermarket repair solution Client Challenge The client required a solution that would allow them to refurbish christmas tree spools that had been in operation for over 20 years in the Troll Field in Norway. Due to the age of the equipment several repairs, material certification and quality assurance documentation were required as part of the overall work scope. Solution The overall age of the equipment was a challenge faced by the team and various procedures were required to carry out the material certification and quality assurance documentation. The collaboration between Proserv and the client was key to the success of the project, which ultimately provided significant cost savings and reduced lead times by choosing a refurbishment solution of existing equipment over new component parts. Scope Proserv worked with the client to first understand the original material composition as this would aid in the repair process. In order to achieve this, sacrificial test pieces were removed from the base material by using a trepanning process where additional outlets are machined and can be capped off at a later stage. A positive material identification (PMI) was taken of the cores and the results from further mechanical testing. This provided the necessary details to make revision changes to existing weld procedure specifications and procedure qualification records. These were then simulated during the second and third stress relief heat treatment stages. The repair welds were witnessed by DNV and undertaken by Proserv and NS 477 welding inspectors under strict ISO 3834 standards. Checks to the heat affected zones (HAV) and hardness were also collected for analysis. Benefits As a result of the solutions provided by Proserv, the client has further prolonged the life of their assets while bringing the well back into full production. The client is also looking to roll out the procedure for all tree spools within the field.

12 13 Case study: deepwater ROV construction and survey Client: Saipem Location: Brazil Equipment: Vessel, LBL and WROV survey systems Water depth: 2,220m Background The project was located in the Santos Basin of Brazil approximately 167 nautical miles offshore. Project water depth ranged between 2,140 metres and 2,220 metres. A five to seven man survey team was required for a duration of nine months. Project Description During project planning the subsea acoustic arrays were designed and analysed using Geoline3D software, using seabed terrain data and environmental information to maximise efficiency of positioning while minimising the risk of not achieving the required coverage or accuracy. The vessel and ROVs were mobilised with high specification sensors. These were fully calibrated, making use of Proserv s four antenna dynamic GPS system to provide the ultimate accuracy reference system. Further offshore calibrations and verifications were performed to ensure all systems were performing optimally. Eight subsea acoustic arrays were installed and calibrated and these were used, in conjunction with inertial navigation systems, to position workclass ROV systems with high accuracy and stable positioning at depth. Scope The scope of the project was to provide support to the primary rigid pipelay vessel. Initially pre-lay surveys of the proposed route were performed by the ROV, collecting multibeam echosounder (MBES) data and digitally recorded video data. The data from these surveys were presented on charts showing shaded seabed topography, contours and potential obstacles. Positioning support was provided during construction, pipe-lay and free standing hybrid riser installations, ensuring that installation within all target boxes and lay corridors was achieved. Following installation work, as-built surveys were performed, again using ROVmounted MBES. The data was processed, combined and presented in charts, 3D models and reports on board the vessel. Full project data deliverables were delivered on the vessel, with no subsequent project processing or reporting required. Conclusion The LBL arrays and vessel and ROV survey spreads were efficiently installed, calibrated, operated and maintained over the nine month project duration without lost time, thanks to pre-planning of the project and the quality and commitment of Proserv s survey services personnel. I would definitely recommend Proserv; an excellent job performed. - Saipem
14 15 An award winning approach for subsea optimisation Proserv s Artemis 2G technology, one of the core technologies within our ACT (Augmented Control Technologies) tool kit, won the Subsea UK 2017 Innovation Award based on its ability to help clients reduce costs, improve equipment reliability, maximise field life and fast track production. Based on newly released market data, the subsea controls market is estimated to be worth around $70 billion. At the core of A2G s development is the growing market need for more cost effective methods of extending field life and optimising production using existing infrastructure. Ingenious simplicity is at the core of Proserv s approach. We work with our customers to maximise the use of their existing infrastructure and assets by delivering appropriate products and services specifically developed for marginal and brownfield applications. This drives costs down, while providing the systems to improve operating efficiency and the ability to understand and optimise field and reservoir performance in the short and long term. Based on newly released market data, the subsea controls markets is estimated to be worth around $70 billion. Continued and reliable production from these assets is of tremendous importance to the operators and the world energy demand. Market acceptance for A2G and our ACT approach is growing widely and operators are starting to see that by thinking in a smarter way to solve the problem and break away from the notion that all issues require a full system upgrade, they will be able to prosper even in the current economic climate.
16 17 Challenge 1: Production Reliability Poor reliability (electronics failures), poor OEM support, and poor local control of repaired systems is changing subsea control systems from being maintenance free to having planned maintenance regimes at unplanned cost. Proserv Approach Proserv offers a proven, highly reliable and obsolescence resilient solution to give the operator a maintenance free subsea production control system and deliver uninterrupted production without a full system replacement. Challenge 2: Obsolescence support for extended life Often there is insufficient support for aging systems from the OEM. The parts are obsolete and the technology is no longer available. Proserv Approach Proserv s co-exist and retrofit technology enables a well life upgrade path without expensive full system shut downs so maximising the use of existing assets. Challenge 3: Adding wells to brownfield subsea systems To create additional wells by extending fields requires new technology to co-exist with existing technology both subsea and topside. Proserv Approach Our technology solution enables the seamless integration of both systems, without affecting existing subsea control systems. It also alleviates the need for new umbilicals, minimising downtime. Challenge 4: Additional instrumentation to optimise production Brownfield upgrades often require additional instrumentation to monitor aging assets (for leakages or vibration) or for production performance (multiphase flow). Older installed subsea production control systems rarely have the functionality or capability required to support the new monitoring capabilities that exist today. Proserv Approach Our technology solution eliminates the need for new umbilical infrastructures, providing the required information to maximise production. The Proserv solution also allows operators options that were never previously available to them and this has been recognised by global operators struggling with technology options for aging assets. Operators are starting to see that by thinking in a smarter way to solve the problem and break away from the notion that all issues require a full system upgrade, they will be able to prosper even in the current economic climate.
18 19 Recent project successes West Africa The successful award of a full system review including completion of a full power communications and hydraulics analysis for implementing an ACT system upgrade solution. This was to ensure field expansion capability where the existing OEM would no longer support the installed equipment subsea without a full system upgrade, which was unpalatable to the operator. Gulf of Mexico Proserv has been awarded a project to replace the electronics of six subsea control modules. This is so that the operator can move away from the poor support offered by the existing OEM and allow Proserv to fully support their subsea control systems. North Sea Proserv carried out the full testing and offshore support of the OEM s subsea controls modules, subsea distribution unit and jumpers and within a tight turnaround. This was all because of limited support from the OEM. Scandinavia Proserv refurbished the client s older subsea control modules that had obsolescence issues and replaced the aging electronics with the latest generation system to support future applications. The OEM was unable to support this or deliver spare parts. Asia Pacific Proserv carried out a detailed study of another OEM control module with a client to demonstrate retrofit capability and its additional functionality refreshed into this aging system. Core to the Proserv offering is the practice of working around the problem to find the best solution, rather than trying to address the issue with a single restrictive product approach. To date, Proserv has engineered and manufactured over 260 subsea control modules to clients globally, all with zero failures.
20 21 An innovation in subsea sampling With operators facing increased challenges in maximising production from geologically complex and often remote and inhospitable fields, being able to generate accurate and reliable information from wells is critical. Proserv has recently launched a new subsea sampling cylinder to enable well operators to safely and efficiently capture samples from a subsea producing well so as to accurately capture well properties throughout the lifetime of a field. Leveraging our expertise Based on existing sampling cylinder technology, the Proserv subsea sampling cylinder (SSC) will be the world s first fully qualified and certified for shipping sample cylinder for use in a subsea environment. These cylinders will allow operators to take samples directly from a subsea sampling system and ship to the laboratory, thus improving quality and safety risks associated with sample transfer and also enhancing sample integrity. A flexible solution to meet market demand The Proserv SSC is suitable for severe service applications and has a large two litre sample volume. Based on the unique coatings and sealing solutions used, this removes the exposure of hydrocarbons or H2S to field personnel and limits any loss of containment to the environment. These cylinders are available for sale or rental for use with existing third party systems or can be integrated with Proserv s bespoke subsea sampling systems (SSS), which have been manufactured and delivered to clients around the world. At the forefront of sampling innovation Proserv has an established track record spanning over 35 years in the sampling services and subsea sectors and we are consistently delivering robust technology systems and services for customers on time and to the highest standards and technical specifications. With the increasing demand for flow assurance and reservoir analysis, Proserv fully intends to set the pace as the leading global player in the subsea sampling field.
22 23 by Lindsay MacDonald Senior Manager Engineering and Technology Next generation diving communications Proserv, by acquisitions, has been involved in diver communications from the 1970s, through the acquisition of Nautronix in 2015 and prior to that the Nautronix acquisition of Helle Engineering. Our background Helle was the market leader in the diving community with most dive vessels having a Helle radio or Helle unscrambler to either provide analogue wired helium speech unscramblers or 25kHz emergency through water communication. These systems, to all who remember, were housed in blue ABS plastic boxes. The unscrambling was, when scored on a modified rhyme test (MRT), only around 40 to 60 percent intelligible. Technology was the limiting factor. Helle was acquired by Nautronix, who invested in upgrading the analogue systems to a semi-digital modular solution, using digital signal processor (DSP) techniques to vastly improve the system capabilities with MRTs scoring above 95 percent. The DSP system in the late 1990s and early 2000 was by far the market leader and was fitted to the highest specification diving vessels. Current market challenges Communications systems over the years have lacked investment with what appeared to be a limited market. This did give an opportunity for new entrants to develop competing systems with some enhanced features, but based on the same analogue techniques, most of the systems were still affected by the same noise issues associated with less than perfect umbilicals. Emergency through water communication (ETWC) suffers from having to use a poor signalling technique, 25kHz, SSB, AM, which is very susceptible to in band noise. The signalling techniques used are a regulatory requirement to allow all available systems to communicate regardless of supplier. So, the challenge for the OEM is to maximise capability with quite severe constraints applied. Introducing the nextgeneration NASDive communications system In 2014, a development programme commenced to deliver a step change in diver communications. The release of the Proserv NASDive product line was the culmination of this development. NASDive provides a step change in system performance in that it is a fully digital system and moves many of the functions to the software domain. This was undertaken with the knowledge that currently available components and Proserv software have the performance reliability in safety critical applications, i.e. diving and acoustic BOP control. In addition to the safety benefits a digital system allowed for a reduction in cores required in the umbilical and also works over poor quality cores, where previously the umbilical might have been scrapped thereby saving the diving contractor money. The underlying philosophy of moving to a fully digital system was to allow ease of interfacing to other communication media, such as telephony, video and entertainment. NASDive ETWC was also moved to the software domain. The external signalling is still the same, but advanced filtering techniques allowed for reduction in sensitivity to noise. Transducer improvements were also incorporated, which gave signal to noise improvements. These were the key advances to improve speech quality. Solutions benefits From a safety perspective, the main benefits are higher quality speech to each other and to the surface and also with more robustness to less than ideal overall system conditions, such as poor quality umbilical cores. Additionally, a unique feature of NASDive is the ability for the bellman and the excursion divers to continue to have unscrambled communication with each other in the event of a loss of wired communications to the vessel. The combination of digital signals, which are immune to noise pick up in the umbilical, and the fact each diver has his own optimised unscrambler, provides the highest quality communication capability. The modular construction of the system provides ease of expansion and interfacing, i.e. the addition of other communication points, VOIP telephony, entertainment systems, interface to other communication networks aboard the vessel and use of different wireless headsets for the supervisor. What s next? In terms of market potential, we are seeing some significant uptake for the Proserv NASDive technology solution among global vessel and subsea companies. Proserv will continue to invest in our NASDive technology, working on developments such as interfacing with tablets, using ipads for entertainment and control of the system and remote monitoring for system analysis and video communications to and from the bell to improve operational efficiencies.
24 25 Engineering it right, first time. For several decades, clients have put their trust in Proserv for the successful execution of projects on time, every time. Our engineering services range from conceptualisation through to manufacture, testing and operation, with robust R&D ensuring we deliver the optimum results for clients across the energy sector. We draw on our breadth of global experience to think outside the box and develop, test and deploy solutions that minimise product development and procurement costs, as well as deployment time. Proserv encourages clients to engage at the project concept or pre-feed stage. By doing so, we can provide a solution from an integrated services team versus multiple contractors, helping to eliminate risk and cost inefficiencies from the start. The following pages contain some recent project examples of our multi-disciplinary teams in action, delivering quick turnaround results to make sure critical client projects remain on track. Case study: bespoke subsea engineering solution Client: Subsea engineering firm Location: Gulf of Mexico Project Background The client contacted Proserv because they needed a way to remotely release the delivery of a flow line and umbilical to their subsea field from the vessel transfer line. They did not want an ROV hot stabbed into a hydraulic shackle for risk of entanglement and damage due to the rigging swinging free after the vessel releases the transfer line. Solution Proserv designed a hydraulic accumulator shackle that would allow the client to release the load subsea without hot stab intervention from an ROV. The shackle would operate subsea by opening two valves to allow stored hydraulic volume and pressure to actuate the hydraulic cylinder and retract the shackle pin, ensuring safe release of the payload without jeopardising the ROV. displaced fluid from the hydraulic cylinder as it stroked. The opening and closing of the shackles to attach to the load and hydraulically charge the accumulators will be conducted through an ROV hot stab. Benefits Proserv met the client s deadline of design, build and testing in 30 days The shackle releases load subsea without ROV hot stab intervention Minimises dropped object scenarios The design is modifiable for other manufacturers, sizes and designs Proserv s hydraulically operated shackles can be made to any size and specification with the current range spanning 55Te to beyond 600Te if required Allows release of load without requiring the ROV to be connected through the hot stab Two accumulators were used to provide the hydraulic volume and pressure to actuate the shackle under a five tonne residual load. An additional two accumulators were used to collect the
26 27 Case study: renewables asset integrity solution Client: Leading Vessel Contractor Location: Baltic Sea, German Sector Equipment: Bespoke internal Marine Growth Removal (MGR) tool Project Background Proserv was contracted by a leading vessel contractor to conduct marine growth removal services for the autonomous internal cleaning of six jacket piles prior to the jacket installation phase at an offshore wind substation located in the German sector of the Baltic Sea. Solution This was the first internal marine growth removal (MGR) project to be undertaken by Proserv and the first phase of the work scope included the design, manufacture and test of a bespoke internal MGR tool. The solution also had to feature specific capabilities ranging from the inner surface cleaning of mm Id jacket piles, surface finishes to SA 2.0 within pile depths of msw and from the top of pile internal cleaning depths ranging between metres. Scope Proserv based the design and functionality on existing tooling with external cleaning capability and modified the design to allow for internal cleaning. A new cleaning frame was fabricated with central guide cone and modified stabbing legs which engage with the pile outer diameters. A successful FAT was carried out at the Proserv Birchmoss facility prior to mobilisation. During offshore execution all 6 piles were cleaned within 25 hours from first deployment to final recovery, resulting in a total active cleaning time of 6 hours 50 minutes to complete the project. Conclusion Proserv s MGR tool successfully cleaned all 6 piles within 25 hours from first deployment to final recovery, resulting in a total active cleaning time of 6 hours 50 minutes to complete the project. This proved the tool to be reliable for removing marine growth subsea, saving the client a considerable amount of time and money compared to diver team operations. Benefits A complete 360 surface clean in 90 minutes Prevents costly maintenance work after installation Can be used in a variety of water depths Environmentally friendly diver-less technology that is operated remotely from the surface Easy and quick to deploy with minimal human intervention Variable operating pressures up to 1000 bar with flow rates up to 200lpm if required Proserv s MGR tool successfully cleaned all 6 piles within 25 hours from first deployment to final recovery resulting in a total active cleaning time of 6 hours 50 minutes.
28 29 End of life solutions. Proserv s approach to decommissioning is savings operators $millions. Our aim is to provide clients with the most reliable, efficient and predictable end of life solution delivered at the lowest cost with no compromise on best in class HSE performance. Central to our success is our continual focus on providing the best possible solution for the client. By this, we mean not just pushing the products and services within our portfolio that would benefit us and instead consider what would be in the best interests of the client, always. For Proserv, this often results in the development of new or existing tooling solutions and a bundled service approach to solve unique client challenges. This helps to eliminate risk and ensure cost efficiencies from the start. An innovative approach to well abandonment Proserv recently provided a SIMOPs well abandonment solution for a client s asset retirement program. Traditionally the client would deploy mechanical knives to cut the well after plugging, which takes around two hours per well plus equipment run in hole charges. However, for this project they adopted a new approach using Proserv s abrasive water cutting technology to carry out the majority of the cuts. That meant that once the well services provider had started plugging the wells we could operate offline and begin cutting operations simultaneously. As we were offline our time did not extend the rig days / critical path offshore resulting in a saving of two hours per well, which became significant across 100 wells over the six to seven month campaign. The client was really challenging the way they approached plugging and abandonment campaigns to be as efficient as possible. We adapted our operating approach to align with their vision, saving almost 16 days of rig time.
30 31 With the Proserv solution, clients can have confidence in the reliability of our service. To date, we have cut over 300 wells globally in a variety of challenging conditions and environments, so our track record speaks for itself. Platform severance and removal Proserv s expertise is not limited to well severance. We also offer a comprehensive range of excavation, cutting and cleaning solutions for topside preparation, severance and support services. There are varying levels of preparation work required for topsides depending on the size of project as no two are alike, ranging from small satellite platforms through to large offshore platforms. Removing topside, platform jackets and associated substructures is a complex operation. It requires detailed pre-planning due to ageing facilities and, sometimes, lack of accurate information available. To support this process, Proserv work in collaboration with the operator and lifting contractor to find the best solution possible for the workscope. We offer a complete service and tooling solution including proven cold cutting technologies for the removal of the topside and sub structures. These can be adapted as required to fit individual project requirements and as the industry adapts to larger structures and increased water depths. We have many years of experience working with clients on their decommissioning challenges. We can support all stages of the lifecycle process from planning, design, engineering and testing through to complete project management. The client was really challenging the way they approached plugging and abandonment campaigns to be as efficient as possible. We adapted our deployment, recovery and proving methods to align with their vision, saving almost 16 days of rig time. Case study: platform well severance Client: Global Service Provider Location: Norway Equipment: Bespoke Diamond Wire and Lifting Plug Assembly Project Background Proserv was contracted by a global service provider to provide a cutting and recovery solution for 28 pile guides on the jacket structure of the Frigg DP2 platform located in the Norwegian sector. The client required a solution allowing them to attach four buoyancy tanks to remove the jacket structure in one piece while onshore. Solution Proserv designed and fabricated a bespoke diamond wire ROV tool and associated buoyancy solution. Following the completion of the cutting process the buoyancy solution aided in the deployment of the lifting plug recovering the cut pile guide. All operations were designed for ROV operation only. Scope To successfully cut and remove 28 pile guides to the surface, the process included 280 separate diamond wire cut operations. Proserv designed a buoyancy tank and lifting plug for deployment below the pile guide from where it was docked. ROVs continually monitored the progress and assisted with the docking procedure. Once secured, the lifting plug was hydraulically locked in place, ensuring the ROV could attach the diamond wire cutting tool onto the mounting plate located on the lifting plug. As a result, a 360 degree rotation around the pile guide was possible, providing access to the support structures requiring severance. Proserv also designed and provided bespoke hot stab ROV connectors. Conclusion Proserv designed and manufactured a range of equipment to complete the project successfully. The buoyancy tank and lifting plug provided ease of docking while the diamond wire ROV tool provided the ideal cutting solution. Benefits Close, open cooperation with the ROV operator to allow simulation of operations prior to the offshore phase Proven track record in decommissioning cutting projects Robust tooling for use in hazardous environments One of the safest cutting systems available and harmless to the marine environment Fully bespoke design to meet the cutting challenge
