Presenters will include experts from the New England Aquarium, NOAA, Center for Coastal Studies, Northeastern University and many others. Students will investigate current and on-going projects in marine science and related disciplines. Symposium Schedule: 8:00-8:45 Presenter and student registration 8:45-8:55 Welcome/opening remarks 9:00-9:40 Session 1 9:50-10:30 Session 2 10:40-11:20 Session 3 11:30-12:10 Keynote 12:20 Lunch 1:00 Event ends Featured Presentation: Hanging Out with Humpbacks, presented by Dr. David Wiley, Research Coordinator with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. The last two decades have seen a revolution in whale research. Whereas previous researchers were mainly limited to surface observations, technologies allow today s scientists to gain unprecedented views of the complex underwater lives of these mysterious ocean giants. Scientists at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, located just off the coast of Massachusetts, have been in the vanguard of this research and will share new findings about the lives of humpback whales and what can be done to protect them. Workshops: There will be 13 hands-on marine science workshops that will be repeated in each of the three time slots. Students will attend two workshops during the day in addition to the featured presentation and the ocean science fair. Ocean Science Activity Fair: Presenters will lead short activities and demonstrations at tables, and students will have 40-minutes to rotate between different tables, learning and networking with marine science professionals. Space is limited, and registration will take place on a first-come, first-served basis. To register: 1) Fill out the registration form here: 2) Pay online via PayPal, or initiate a Purchase Order for payment by check. An invoice will be sent to you upon registration. Full payment is expected by the day of the event. 3) Collect student workshop preferences via google form: by Monday, February 11th. 6 Workshop Offerings Use the workshop number in designating student preferences on the google form: To the greatest extent possible, workshop attendance will be assigned based on student preferences while ensuring an even distribution of participants in each session. Workshop preferences and final # of students attending are due February 11 th. Schools will be charged per student, based on the numbers we have on February 11 th. Even if you bring less students on the day of the event, you will be charged for the number registered on February 11 th # Topic Content Ocean Smog: Understanding Plastic Pollution and Creating Solutions Gyotaku: Art of Fish Printing Cool it! Climate change solutions Public Forum on Decision Making for Climate Impacts What to do about CO2 and Ocean Plastics? Squid - Inside and Out! Plastic Pollution is a leading threat to marine ecosystems throughout the world. This workshop provides students with an overview of this global problem, a hands-on activity, ideas for studying plastic pollution locally, and solutions that all of us can adopt to curb this problem. Presented by the Center for Coastal Studies Tap into your creative side while making marine science art! During this hands-on workshop, students will discuss sustainable fisheries and practice gyotaku, a traditional Japanese art form of fish printing. Students will learn basic printmaking techniques and take home their own prints. No art experience is necessary! Presented by the Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge of our time. How can we take action to slow the rate of change? In this session, we will review the causes and local impacts of climate change, then look at a wide range of actions to cool it and address climate change. Students will receive links for reliable sources of climate change information, and many ideas for climate change solutions to share. Presented by Woods Hole Science and Technology Education Partnership Imagine you are a stakeholder that has to work together with others to come up with solutions to protect from climate impacts such as Extreme Precipitation or Sea Level Rise. This workshop will use a game board to explore stakeholders that are involved with decision making, comparing pros and cons of each solution and understanding the eventual tradeoffs of such decisions. Presented by the Helmuth Lab at Northeastern University Marine Science Center Participants will think like green chemists in this workshop! They will first see how excess CO2 affects our ocean using dry ice through a hands on demonstration. Then we will learn about the problem of micro plastics in the ocean. Participants will have the opportunity to make edible juice pods and be challenged to evaluate this sustainable alternative beverage packaging using the three criteria of green chemistry! Presented by Beyond Benign From color changing cells to three hearts, come learn about one of the most fascinating animals in the ocean! Students will participate in a hands-on squid dissection to learn dissection skills, squid biology, and a little about the people who work at the Aquarium. Presented by the New England Aquarium
7 Hands-on activity in ocean acidification Can you hear me now? Marine mammal bioacoustics Ocean Acidification: Modeling the Chemistry! Fluid and Dynamic: Hacking The Ocean- Related Career Ocean Flowers: Seaweed Art & Biodiversity Measuring the Mess: Using Corals as Tools to Find Microplastics Pollution Sea-Run, Go!: Using technology to learn about historic sea-run fish Seawater is becoming more acidic as a result of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide. Many marine organisms produce shells or skeletons from carbonate minerals, and increasingly acidic oceans will have negative impacts on them. Moreover, acidification can affect animals in other ways. We will experimentally examine these effects on skeletons of marine organisms such as oysters, mussels and crabs, and discuss the potential consequences for these and other organisms in their communities. Presented by MIT Sea Grant This hands-on activity will expose students to the various sounds marine mammals make as well as how and why we study them. Students will handle a skull, touch baleen, identify marine mammal sounds and use buzzers to "find their pod". Presented by Woods Hole Sea Grant Using LEGO bricks as atoms (in standard element colors), you will build molecules in specific shapes (similar to atomic space-filling models) to create carbon dioxide, calcium carbonate, etc. Guided by layout mats, you will model the chemical reactions in seawater and demonstrate for yourself how increased CO2 in the atmosphere affects the oceans and why ocean acidification makes it difficult for sea creatures to make shells. Presented by MIT Edgerton Center "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is a dumb question. Don't let old thinking stick you in a box. Join an active discussion about busting out of boxes, cross-pollinating careers, applying creativity to your work, and forging new paths in a bold future. In the face of some of the greatest challenges our society faces, we need to think, act, and work differently. How will you blow up the status quo? Presented by ollie Seaweeds are the flowers of the sea. Like the floral bouquets used as expressions of love and friendship, seaweeds are remarkably diverse and exhibit a beauty and complexity that belies the scourge of swimmers and beachgoers who commonly see seaweed as a rotten mass on the shoreline. In this activity you will see the ocean forest for its trees by examining live seaweeds from New England, and learning about their role in a healthy ocean. Presented by Roger Williams University Millions of tons of plastics are entering the ocean annually, and most cannot be seen by the naked eye. Invisible microplastics are often ingested by marine organisms, but the impact on food webs is still largely unknown. Come perform experiments with the Northern Star Coral, native to New England! Feed the corals plastics, watch how they react, and investigate how that can affect other animals in our New England waters. Presented by Roger Williams University Most fish live in either salt or freshwater. But did you know some species live in both? We call these species sea-run fish, and they are an important part of salt and freshwater ecosystems. Unfortunately, some of these historic fishes are now listed under the Endangered Species Act. We ll use games and a new app to learn about: the history of sea-run fish, habitat connectivity, diadromous life cycles, and a call to action! Presented by NOAA Fisheries Service
