3 Innovation to the United Nations We need to be more dynamic in researching and testing new ideas. Like all opportunities, innovation carries risks. But as Albert Einstein once said our ship is always safe at the shore, but that is not what it is built for. -Ban Ki Moon (Secretary General UN), New, different, change- those are three scary words for any organizations -the UN included. These words imply risk, potential failure and blame. People within any organization will of course tell you that they fully support innovation, but they generally prefer innovation that comes without real change, without risk, without possible failure. 13 Target Product Profiles (TPP) Purpose: Market Shaping: Informs industry/academia on UNICEF s need for a new/improved solution. Useful for convening and aligning with partners on UNICEF s priorities. Informs on product requirements (without prescribing a specific solution) such as: Performance Function Stakeholders Design Potential to broaden supplier field. Less prescriptive of product solution than Expression of Interest (EOI) and Request For Information (RFI). Alerts suppliers prior to issuing an Request For Proposal (RFP), Request For Quotation (RFQ), Invitation To Bid (ITB) Process: 1. Drafted by Innovation + Technical officers 2. Shared/reviewed by UNICEF Program Division (PD) and relevant stakeholders 3. Published externally: United Nations Global Marketplace (UNGM) 4. Innovation focal point and Centres respond to requests/questions (ad hoc or through workshops/webinars) 5. Tender.

14 A closer look at some of our projects Acute Respiratory Infection Diagnostics Aid (ARIDA) Need/Challenge : To improve solution(s) to diagnose pneumonia. Outcome: A device that assists the health care worker in assessing patients.

16 Acute Respiratory Infection Diagnostics Aid (ARIDA) Holistic Approach: ARIDA Field Trial and Integrated Pneumonia System Implementation (IPSI) IPSI is the integrated approach to tackling pneumonia in all areas of the health system. HEALTH POST (CHEW) HEALTH CENTRES PRIMARY HOSPITAL The IPSI approach is inline with WHO guidelines and a large scale pilot is being planned with BMGF, PD and the Ethiopia CO. ARIDA Amoxicillin DT ARIDA Amoxicillin DT Pulse Oximeter Oxygen Concentrators Pulse Oximeter Oxygen Concentrators The ARIDA project aims at evaluating the performance of ARIDA devices against the ARI timer in obtaining the respiratory rate in the hands of users in terms of accuracy and effectiveness. The ARIDA project will be conducted in Primary Health Facility and Outreach levels. IPSI: Integrated Pneumonia System Implementation \ Funded by: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation ARIDA Pilot: Acute Respiratory Infection Diagnostic Aid Pilot \ Funded by: La Caixa Foundation The results will be a recommendation for the RR device to be used in the IPSI project.

18 Acute Respiratory Infection Diagnostics Aid (ARIDA) FIELD TRIALS OUTLOOK Countries under consideration: 1. Bolivia 2. Benin 3. China 4. DPRK 5. Ethiopia 6. Ghana 7. Mozambique 8. Nepal 9. Niger 10. Peru 11. Philippines Note: Ethiopia and Bolivia are confirmed for the FTs. Field Trials are under two areas: Accuracy and efficiency: How the ARIDA device(s) perform against the current practice (in most cases the ARI timer) in terms of accuracy (how accurate is the RR) and efficiency (how quick can the RR result be obtained) in the hands of frontline workers (CHW). Long term use: The FTs are Phase 4 effectiveness studies intended to evaluate the performance of Community Health Workers and Primary Health Care Workers using the ARIDA device(s). The study will monitor the accuracy of pneumonia diagnosis using the ARIDA device(s), suitability and acceptability of the ARIDA device(s), as well as collect information about its use in calculating respiratory rate in line with iccm guidelines in order to aid in the diagnosis of pneumonia. Duration: 3 months, 300 users including Outreach (CHW) and Primary Health Facility level.

19 ZIKA Rapid Diagnostic Test Need/Challenge: Through market analysis it has been discovered there is a Lack of RDT products on the market for ZIKA. Products are in development, but industry needs steering as to what the programmatic requirements are. Outcome: A TPP will be launched jointly with WHO to communicate the need, followed up with RFP with conditional awards over the coming year being offered.

20 ZIKA Vaccine Need/Challenge: The development of a vaccine is a major priority to respond to zika epidemics in the future. Vaccination of pregnant women and women of childbearing age is the main target, and pragmatic strategies will be needed to fast-track the development of a safe and effective product. Outcome: A TPP will be launched jointly with WHO, which will serve as a guide to consult and build consensus on regulatory requirements for Zika vaccine evaluation and registration.

21 Primary School Furniture Project Need/Challenge: School furniture in developing countries tends to be poorly designed, both structurally and ergonomically and poorly suited for its intended purpose. Outcome: Development of procurement guidelines and child friendly school furniture designs to support local production. Frame Receptor (double) Receptor (single) Reinvention

22 Weight Measurement Tapes Need/Challenge: Efficient, accurate and lower cost option of obtaining children's weight. Outcome: Definition of need critical before start of innovation project. Community/health facility levels: tape not needed. Tape not approved as a supplement to weighing scale according to WHO requirements. Lack of programmatic need.
