3 THE VISION CHEAPER, SAFER, GREENER DET CRC aspires to a future where coiled tubing drill rigs undertake cheap, safe and environmentally friendly mineral exploration drilling. Where coiled tubing drilling is complemented by real-time downhole logging of the petrophysics and rock fabric of boreholes and top-of-hole logging of their chemistry and mineralogy. Where remote access to these real-time data from boreholes permits continuous drilling campaigns, without lab-based assay or rig demobilisation and remobilization. Where continuous drilling is guided by expert decisions based on continuously improved geophysical inversions utilising real-time petrophysics and vectoring based on real-time geochemistry and mineralogy. FIVE YEARS IN... DET CRC S TOP TEN HIGHLIGHTS Design and fabrication of version 3 of the prototype coiled tubing (CT) drill rig, the RoXplorer, has commenced. Design incorporates next generation steel tubing with major improvements in fatigue life. 2. Over 300 m of CT drilling with penetration rates of ~500 mm/minute have been completed at the Brukunga Drilling Research and Training Facility (DRTF). 3. Dramatic improvements in percussion bit life in CT drilling trials. A single bit was used to drill a 110 m hole with little wear of the bit. 4. Consistent 500 mm/minute rate of penetration achieved for newly designed full-face diamond bit combined with high speed turbine in abrasive hard granite. ~ 500% improvement compared with initial CT diamond drilling experiments. 5. Built and tested a new spectral gamma sensor for the AutoShuttle, incorporating high performance scintillators and solid state photomultipliers. The sensor should deliver K, U, and Th concentrations as well as density and average atomic number. 6. Cuttings return experiments in the laboratory and at the Brukunga DRTF have identified a suite of optimal operating specifications (notably particle size distributions and fluid flow rates) that will inform design of a Lab-at-Rig system for CT drilling. 7. Significant steps toward next generation Lab-at-Rig technologies including; i) patent lodged on automated mineralogy from XRD spectra (AutMin), ii) patent lodged on ppb sensing of gold by optical methods and iii) fluid management system ruggedized and deployed in the Mineral Systems Drilling Program. 8. Novel seismic processing techniques and joint inversions of seismic and MT data from the Kevitsa case study have yielded high resolution 3D geophysical images of the subsurface. The imaging was dramatically improved by calibration with available borehole logs. 9 AutoSonde and Lab-at-Rig Version 1 technologies successfully trialled in 14 hole, 2,796 m drilling program with Geoscience Australia/Geological Survey of Victoria. Wireless Sub and Lab-at-Rig Version 1 successfully trialled in >800 m deep drill hole in collaboration with Anglo American. 10 Detailed planning for >$7M (cash and in-kind) Mineral Systems Drilling Program in collaboration with Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA), Kingston Resources and Minotaur Exploration. ~7,000 m drilling program with deployment of Wireless Sub, AutoSonde and Lab-at-Rig Version 1, began on 1 August $12M Additional cash funding $3M Cash funding received for Mineral Systems Drilling Program >300m CT drilling at up to 500 mm/min CEO S REPORT The global mining and metals sector is in the midst of the super correction to the super-cycle, with an extended period of lower and volatile commodity prices In this context, expenditure on mineral exploration continued to decline in Australia during Expenditure in the March 2015 quarter was $396M, having plummeted from its high of $1,022M in the March 2012 quarter. There has thus been great pressure on DET CRC to justify sponsors funding of research on mineral exploration. DET CRC s response has been one of financial discipline, focused research on our three pillars and communications that address the productivity benefits of new technology. The value of DET CRC s outcomes is witnessed by the fact that, despite the super correction, projected lifetime revenue is ~$12M higher than the original (Commonwealth Agreement) budget. Significant new funding was obtained during DET CRC will receive $2.7M cash and $3.0M in-kind from the Geological Survey of South Australia, Minotaur Exploration and Kingston Resources to support the Mineral Systems Drilling Program and trial its technologies. The SA Government s Premier s Research and Industry Fund awarded $600K to support work on the coiled tubing (CT) drill rig and its Mining Industry Participation Office awarded $350K to undertake the Real-Time Drill Site project. CSIRO contributed $250K to the Lab-at-Rig Futures Project. Research is focused on the three pillars of CT drilling, downhole sensing and top-of-hole sensing. Design of the final CT Rig prototype, the RoXplorer has commenced, incorporating an order of magnitude improvement in the fatigue life of steel tubing. Over 300 m of trial CT drilling was undertaken with penetration rates up to 500 mm/minute. In downhole sensing, a spectral gamma sensor which will determine K, U and Th concentrations was developed for the AutoShuttle platform. In top-of-hole sensing, patents have been lodged on automating mineralogy determination from XRD spectra and in parts per billion (ppb) sensing of gold by optical methods also saw significant technology testing in collaborative drilling programs. The AutoSonde and Lab-at-Rig were trialled in a drilling program with Geoscience Australia/Geological Survey of Victoria and the Wireless Sub and Lab-at-Rig were trialled in collaboration with Anglo American. A commercialisation agreement was signed with Boart Longyear for the downhole sensing AutoSonde. A commercialisation agreement has also been signed with Imdex for the Lab-at-Rig subsequent to the reporting period. Commercialisation of the first phases of two of DET CRC s three pillar technologies are major milestones. 407 driller trainees have passed through the Brukunga DRTF. Our target of 50 higher degree commencements has been reached, with 52 commencements and eight completions (plus three more completions shortly after the end of reporting period). All seven Commonwealth Output Milestones and all seven Utilisation Milestones scheduled during the reporting period were met. All 46 lifetime to-date Output Milestones and all 24 lifetime to-date Utilisation Milestones have been met. Staff in-kind contributions during the reporting period were 10.6 FTEs above the original Commonwealth Agreement Budget (CAB). Cumulatively, staff in-kind contributions of ~151 FTEs exceed the CAB of ~120 FTEs. Non-staff in-kind contributions during the reporting period were $5.3M, against the CAB of $1.2M. Cumulatively, non-staff in-kind contributions of $29.7M exceed the CAB of $9.2M. A video report on the year prepared for DET CRC Ltd. s AGM is available at Prof. Richard Hillis Chief Executive Officer Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre
4 PARTICIPANTS, COMMUNICATIONS AND RESEARCH MANAGEMENT PARTICIPANTS Despite the depressed environment for mineral exploration, cuts to exploration budgets and changing corporate priorities, DET CRC increased its level of Participant involvement during the reporting period. DET CRC s lifetime revenue is projected to exceed our original target by ~$11.6M. After adjusting for timing differences, cash contributions from Participants are currently $4.2M ahead of the original Commonwealth Agreement Budget (CAB) of $13.5M. Staff in-kind contributions during the reporting period were 10.6 FTEs above the CAB. Cumulatively, staff in-kind contributions of FTEs exceed the CAB of FTEs. Non-staff in-kind contributions during the reporting period were $5.3M, against the CAB of $1.2M. Cumulatively, non-staff in-kind contributions of $29.7M exceed the CAB of $9.2M. COMMUNICATIONS DET CRC held its fourth Annual Conference: Uncovering the Future IV in Hahndorf, SA, in November 2014, attended by over 140 delegates, 55% of whom were from industry/end-user organisations. Two public press releases were issued during the reporting period, the first on the commercialisation of the AutoSonde by Industry Participant Boart Longyear, the second on the Mineral Systems Drilling Program. Our website, press releases, quarterly enews EXPLORE and DET CRC TV remain key communications tools. At the time of writing, DET CRC TV videos had generated over 19,000 views. 5 $40-$60 /m estimated CT drilling costs 500% Improvement in full-faced diamond bit ROP 7 Days Wireless Sub field operation PROGRAM 1: DRILLING (LEADER: SOREN SOE, DET CRC) PROJECTS Coiled Tubing Drilling for Mineral Exploration Drilling Monitoring and Optimisation Brukunga Drilling Research and Training Facility (DRTF) OBJECTIVE Our objective, to reduce the cost and environmental impact, and increase the safety, of drilling exploration holes, is being met; firstly, by developing a greenfields CT Rig for mineral exploration and; secondly, by optimising conventional drilling techniques. Our R&D in both areas is facilitated by access to the Brukunga DRTF. ACHIEVEMENTS Following a comprehensive period of testing and review during , we have established the key design parameters for coiled tubing (CT) drilling in mineral exploration. We have commenced design and fabrication of version 3 of the CT drill rig, the RoXplorer, which will incorporate newly developed steel pipe with significantly improved fatigue life as the coiled tubing material. The RoXplorer is due for completion in mid All up drilling costs for the RoXplorer (inclusive of labour, mobilisation, accommodation and messing) are estimated to be between $40 and $60/m, depending on a number of logistical and geological parameters. This is well within range of our target of $50/m and is substantially below the all up costs of current drilling techniques. We have made significant progress on the design of specific components of the RoXplorer, with significant focus on optimising the down hole assembly for improved drilling rate and lower cost. We achieved a ~500% improvement in rate of penetration for low weight-on-bit, full-faced diamond drilling by combining a high speed down hole turbine with novel drill bit designs (from ~100 mm/min in our first experiments to 500 mm/min). In parallel we achieved a dramatic improvement in bit-life for our newly designed percussion drill bits. Our previous experiments have demonstrated that percussion techniques can achieve penetration rates in excess of 1,000 mm/min in CT drilling, however the percussion drill bits have shown appreciable wear after tens of metres of drilling, resulting in multiple bit changes per hole, increased costs and reduced productivity. During the year we completed a 110 m drill hole with the newly designed percussion bit, under the same conditions as previous experiments, with no decrease in penetration rate and with little sign of wear. A significant contribution to our goal of increasing the costeffectiveness of existing drilling techniques was achieved during with the Wireless Sub being successfully deployed and recording 118 m of drilling data on a diamond drilling rig at Anglo American s Bushranger project in NSW. The sub proved to be robust, recording data for 9 hours a day over 7 days under harsh rig conditions at drilling depths of between 468 and 584 m. The associated idrill software provided real-time display of drilling parameters including weight-on-bit, torque-on-bit, RPM, rate of penetration, water pressure, bit depth, and hole depth. DET CRC s Wireless Sub deployed on a single, deep (>800 m) diamond drill hole in collaboration with Anglo American during late 2015.
6 1,787m AutoSonde logging during Stavely program 200m AutoSonde logging (gamma and mag sus) at Brukunga 1st Major commercialisation deal PROGRAM 2: LOGGING AND SENSING (LEADER: BRETT HARRIS, CURTIN UNIVERSITY) PROJECTS: Sensors for Downhole Rock Properties Real Time Drill Site Joint Inversion of 3D Seismic and MT Data OBJECTIVE Our objective, to increase the value of drill holes by realtime downhole evaluation and refinement of exploration models, is being met; firstly, by development of a range of down hole sensing technologies, including the AutoSonde and AutoShuttle and; secondly, by developing techniques for the real-time access to data and geophysical inversion. ACHIEVEMENTS There was significant progress during towards the routine collection of rock properties from our downhole sensing platforms, the AutoSonde and AutoShuttle. These rock properties (including magnetic susceptibility, density, K, U and Th concentrations and total count gamma) provide a vital link between drill hole observations and regional geophysical datasets that are commonly used in mineral exploration (i.e. magnetic, gravity and radiometric data). We achieved our first major commercialisation outcome with the signing of an exclusive agreement with Boart Longyear for the AutoSonde. Boart Longyear launched the tool, under the new name of TruProbeTM, at the PDAC convention in Toronto during early March The commercialisation agreement is for a total count gamma sensor, commonly used in mineral and energy exploration as a proxy tool for geological logging. Additional sensors such as magnetic susceptibility, induction and sonic are still in development and will be offered separately for commercialisation. Our magnetic susceptibility sensor for the AutoSonde platform was demonstrated in test mode at the DET CRC Annual Conference in November Initial results enabled the team to conceive a new, potentially lower cost but more sensitive design for the magnetic susceptibility sensor. The upgraded prototype has been designed, built, assembled into the AutoSonde platform, calibrated and (at the time of writing) is being deployed in the South Australian Mineral Systems Drilling Program. We acquired and tested a number of new crystals for their sensitivity and suitability for spectral gamma logging at sensor dimensions suitable for deployment within the AutoShuttle, the new crystals outperformed materials commonly used as scintillators and provided gamma spectra of sufficient quality to measure the concentration of natural radioactive isotopes K, U and Th as well as the average atomic mass and density of material in the borehole wall. In parallel we have evaluated and tested robust solid state silicon photomultipliers as a viable replacement for the relatively fragile photomultiplier tubes that are commonly used in downhole instruments. Our downhole tools will be less susceptible to breakdown due to incorporating silicon photomultipliers. We have developed new techniques for the joint inversion of collocated seismic and MT data. In contrast to the often smeared inversions produced from MT data alone, these techniques produced well-defined, high resolution images of the subsurface electrical conductivity distribution with geologically plausible geometries. 7 >200 Minerals automatically identified from XRD using AutMin ~50 ppb gold detection limits using optical sensing techniques 16 Fluid chemistry parameters collected by Fluid Management System PROGRAM 3: TARGETING (LEADER: DAVID GILES, PROGRAM 3 LEADER) PROJECTS: 3D Seismic Exploration for Hard Rock Environments Lab-at-Rig for Mineral Exploration Regional Mineral System Drilling for Targeting and Testing OBJECTIVE Our objective, to ensure that drill holes are placed to maximise their success and the knowledge that they produce, is being met; firstly, by developing the Lab-at-Rig top-of-hole sensing platform for geochemistry and mineralogy; secondly, by defining the nature and scale of alteration and dispersion systems that can be used to vector toward mineralisation; thirdly, by developing seismic techniques capable of mapping the volume of rock around and between drill holes; and finally by undertaking major drilling programs to field test our new technologies. ACHIEVEMENTS The Lab-at-Rig Version 1, designed for application in conventional diamond drilling operations, made significant progress toward commercialisation. The Lab-at-Rig Version 1 opportunity fund project culminated in late 2014 with delivery and demonstration of key components at the DET CRC Annual Conference in November. The DET CRC Board accepted a commercialisation proposal from Imdex for Lab-at-Rig in January We have confirmed the suitability of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) as a potential Lab-at-Rig sensor, with a niche application to measure light elements (atomic mass <20), which are problematic for detection by XRF. Our work on sensor development has led to two patent applications. The first covering automated processing of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data for real time mineralogy of geologic samples via a solution (AutMin). The second covering a portable, highly sensitive method for gold detection using optical techniques that would allow mineral exploration companies to test for gold in the part-per-billion (ppb) range on-site at the drilling rig. Our newly developed Fluid Management System (FMS) has been successfully deployed in the Mineral Systems Drilling Program (MSDP), providing many hours of continuous fluid chemistry data. The FMS measurements are particularly sensitive to the concentrations of fluid conditioners such as lubricants, densifiers and viscosifiers, but are also useful in identifying some rock formations, particularly those with reactive chemistry such as sulphides, carbonates and salts. We have conducted a series of experiments from which we have identified a suite of optimal operating specifications including particle size distributions, fluid flow rates and top-of-hole sampling configuration that will allow us to minimise (and quantify) sampling errors in the design of the Lab-at-Rig for CT drilling. This process will proceed in parallel with design of the RoXplorer in Application of novel processing techniques to 3D seismic data from the Kevitsa deposit in Finland has resulted in significant refinement of the seismic cube, imaging of a range of seismic attributes and recognition of geological features with greater resolution than previously achieved. Core samples on site during the Minerals System Drilling Program in regional South Australia.
8 FIELD DEPLOYMENTS In addition to continuing laboratory studies and controlled experiments at the Brukunga DRTF, DET CRC has recognised the need to trial our technologies and associated work flows in real rocks, under real drilling conditions. To this end we have participated in two substantial field deployments during the reporting period and made preparations for a third. 1) The pre-prototype Lab-at-Rig Version 1 and AutoSonde were deployed during a regional drilling collaboration between Geoscience Australia, the Geological Survey of Victoria and DET CRC in the Stavely region of western Victoria. 2) The Lab-at-Rig Version 1 and Wireless Sub were deployed on a single, deep (>800 m) diamond drill hole in collaboration with Anglo American during late ) The far north of the Eyre Peninsula was selected as the location for the Mineral Systems Drilling Program (MSDP) in collaboration between DET CRC, the Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA) and DET CRC affiliates Minotaur Exploration and Kingston Resources. Detailed planning, including stakeholder liaison, cultural and environmental clearances, was a major focus of the reporting period allowing for the commencement of drilling subsequent to the reporting period, on 31st July Boart Longyear UDR1000 drill rig on site during the Minerals System Drilling Program in regional South Australia. 2,796m Drilled with new technologies during Stavely program >800m Deep hole tests Lab-at-Rig and wireless sub $7M Cash and in-kind value of Mineral Systems Drilling Program
