National Aeronautics and Space Administration An MDAO Perspective Dr. Rubén Del Rosario, Principal Investigator Subsonic Fixed Wing Project Fundamental Aeronautics Program National Science Foundation Workshop on The Future of Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization: Advancing the Design of Complex Systems Fort Worth, TX USA September 16,

Energy and Environmental Challenges 1. Fuel Efficiency 2. Emissions 3. Noise

New Highly Integrated Vehicle Capabilities Needed Energy and efficiency challenges will require much greater performance from future aircraft High level of integration: Active Control Aerodynamics Propulsion Airframe Integration and Aeroacoustics Aeroelastic - Lightweight Structures Advanced (Variable) Cycle Aeropropulsion Tools capable of accurately predicting these un-conventional configurations are needed.

Why is MDAO Important to the Aerospace Industry? MDAO provides methods to easily integrate discipline tools together and reduce the computational cost of employing hi-fidelity analyses Enables new design/analysis capability based on considerations from multiple disciplines Acoustic signature vs. fuel-efficiency for an open rotor architecture Potential impact of wing design on sonic boom signature Local fuselage aerodynamic effects on embedded engines Aero-structural interactions for a truss-braced wing Utilizing robust design design with uncertainty at the conceptual level

NASAs MDAO Research Methods Development using COTS MDAO frameworks Advanced Single-Aisle Transport Study (GEN1 MDAO Toolset) HWB Conceptual design (GEN2 MDAO development) Supersonic low-boom aircraft design Variable Cycle Engine Inlet matching High Fidelity Engine Simulation Turbomachinery Structural Optimizations Analysis Tool Development OpenMDAO (Open source engineering framework) Object-oriented Turbomachinery Analysis Code (OTAC) Supersonic Inlet Design Tool Vehicle Sketch Pad (VSP) ANOPP 2

Progress on OpenMDAO OpenMDAO Received Full Approval to be Distributed as Open Source Software under the NASA Open Source Agreement Objective: A computational environment (framework) for analyzing and solving MDAO (Multi-Disciplinary Analysis and Optimization) problems in complex design by : Allowing analysis codes from multiple disciplines at multiple levels of fidelity. Allowing access to out-of-the box solvers and optimizers. Promoting code reuse and the sharing of engineering tools. Allowing users to download, use, modify, and distribute the software at no cost. Integrated Conceptual Design System Using ModelCenter Mach Number Mach Altitude Profile Altitude (ft) Accomplishments/Highlight: Public website created at Includes forum for public discussion as well as extensive documentation Pre-alpha version has been released & is available for public download OpenMDAO project status was presented to the MDO Consortium June 2010 Technology Impact: Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) is a system-level analysis and design capability that captures the physics of the multidisciplinary interactions/coupling in systems design to enable efficient and optimum design to significantly reduce the design cycle. OpenMDAO facilitates a seamless integration of multiple discipline codes at varying levels of fidelity to address different design challenges to obtain cost-effective and timely design solutions.

Overall MDAO Vision

Expected Improvement - Adaptive Sampling Method Implementation of an adaptive sampling method which reduces the number of function calls necessary to find a global optimum. Efficient optimization method for expensive analyses like CFD, FEM. Gray, J.S., & Moore, K.T. (2010). Openmdao: an open source framework for multidisciplinary analysis and optimization. 13th AIAA/ISSMO Multidisciplinary Analysis Optimization Conference

Final Thoughts Advanced Tools Needed for Addressing the Environmental Challenges of Aviation Undertaking and Solving Enduring and Pervasive Challenges Understanding and Assessing the Game Changers for the Future Strong Foundational Research needed in partnership with Industry, Academia and Other Government Agencies Subsonic Fixed Wing 9
