6 Recent AFOSR Transitions Joint Precision Air Drop System (JPADS): Using GPS and electro-mechanical steering actuators allows cargo bundles dropped from cargo planes to steer themselves to drop zones. Coatings and Corrosion Program: Developed non-chromate conversion coatings, primers, and top coats. Same cost as the chromium-based primer but without health and environmental risks. Physically-Constrained Iterative Deconvolution (PCID): PCID extracts most relevant information from image data by removing atmospheric and system blurring to produce a single high-resolution image. 6

7 Recent AFOSR Transitions Cont. Rewritable 3-D Hologram: Developed dynamic holographic 3-D images that can lead to viewing battle space in nearly real time using realistic images. Self-Healing Materials: Research has demonstrated the ability to engineer high efficiency self-healing polymeric composites. One result would be more durable and longer-lasting aircraft. Electric Oxygen Iodine Laser (EOIL): EOIL uses on-board power to generate electrical discharge to eliminate hazardous chemicals. Minimize massive fluid supplytankage subsystem by a small, fixed-mass electrical subsystem. 7

8 Recent AFOSR Transitions Cont. Luminescent Polymers for Explosive Sensing: New polymer has been developed that allows rapid broad detection of all military nitrogen-based high explosives in a single application fluorescent test. TiAl Turbine Blades: Gamma TiAl was selected by GE-Aviation as the material for low pressure turbine blades in the GEnx engine. TiAl provides superior specific strength and creep resistance. Tough Nano-Composites: Advanced nano-coatings of ceramic grains in a hard amorphous matrix increased material toughness & resistance to failure in heavily loaded JSF engine gears & bearings. 8

9 Recent AFOSR Transitions Cont. Joint Direct Attack Munition Release (JDAM): Research effort in microjet array actuators led to improved cavity and store control at Mach 2. Transition to DARPA Micro Adaptive Flow Control Program. Coherent Matter Wave Dynamics: Able to stop a light pulse in one Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and revived it from a second, separate BEC. Results have clear and important application for coherent optical and quantum information processing. Bendable Electronics: Developed superflexible silicon chips that are durable and can be attached to curved surfaces like airplane bodies or engines. 9
