3 IB Middle Years Programme Introduction The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a challenging curriculum framework for students aged years of age. The MYP is being implemented in more than 1000 schools in over 100 countries. IGB International School is fully authorised by the IB to offer the Middle Years Programme. IB World School share a common philosophy a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that IGB International School believes is important for our students. The Middle Years Programme is learner centered and teaches students how to become independent, lifelong learners by developing inquiry and approaches to learning (ATL) skills. The programme fosters responsible attitudes and encourages principled action. The MYP curriculum framework provides a broad and balanced education with rigorous learning objectives in eight subject groups: Language Acquisition Language & Literature Individuals & Societies Sciences Mathematics Arts Physical & Health Education Design Conceptual Understanding Concepts are big ideas that have significance within and across subject groups. MYP students use concepts to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance. The MYP prescribes sixteen key concepts that are transferable across subject groups and have relevance in life beyond school: aesthetics change communication communities connections creativity culture development form global interactions identity logic perspective relationships time, place & space systems While the key concepts provide breadth of understanding across subjects, the MYP also prescribes twelve different related concepts for each subject that provide depth of understanding within a subject. Learning in Context Students learn best when learning experiences are connected to their lives and to their experience of the world. These connections bring academic studies to life and help students create meaning. MYP students explore six prescribed global contexts to develop increasing understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet: identities and relationships personal and cultural identity orientations in space and time scientific and technical innovation fairness and development globalization and sustainability MYP Subject Overviews Middle Years Programme schools consider local, regional and national requirements and the specific needs of their students as they develop their school curriculum within the MYP framework. This document presents the IGBIS subject overviews for which indicate the units that students will study in each subject group and where the key and related concepts and global contexts will be developed.
