2 Fine Arts Number 9197 Name Art Appreciation Students are introduced to painting through an examination of linear and aerial perspectives, depth techniques, influences of culture and current events, and how to critique various aspects of art. In this course, students survey art from the historical perspectives of ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Medieval Italy, and the 15th Century to learn about the influences on sculpting, Greco-Roman style, International Style, and oil painting. The Renaissance is categorized as a transitional phase in style examining the most recognized contributors and influences of religion and wealth. Students will explore the break from traditional painting which resulted in highly stylized techniques of Italian Mannerism, defining characteristics of early 17th century art, the return to Greek and Roman tastes of the Renaissance, the emergence of art academies, and the gaudy style known as Rococo as it focused on the simplicity and morality of life into the 18th century. An exploration of the 19th and 20th centuries will reveal how politics from the 18th century influenced reason and virtue in one aspect and beauty and emotion in another. Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Post-Impressionism, Dada, and Surrealism are all movements and forms of focus on art during the 19th and 20th centuries. Western influence from India, Islam, China, Japan, Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Oceanic regions on art forms and expression are all explored in this course. 4 Health and Physical Education Number 7630 Name Skills for Health In this course, students explore key health topics including physical, mental, emotional, and social health management. Protective factors such as risks, top concerns, and indicators are discussed in correlation with accessing information, analyzing influences, and making healthy decisions. Students are introduced to strategies for effective communication, stress management, and support for mental and emotional problems. The course teaches students the importance of nutrition, physical activity, and the negative effects of alcohol on the body. Injury prevention and safety is presented to prevent injury and avert unhealthy risks. Also addressed are topics such as bullying, violence prevention, social and sexual health in the forms of friendships and romantic relationships, the reproductive system of males and females, as well as marriage and preventing pregnancy. Personal community and environmental health are discussed to promote awareness of hereditary, congenital, infectious, and noninfectious diseases in relation to disease awareness, prevention, and risk. Within the context of mathematical modeling and data analysis, students will study functions and their behaviors, systems of inequalities, probability, experimental design and implementation, and analysis of data. Data will be generated by practical applications arising from science, business, and finance. Students will solve problems that require the formulation of linear, quadratic, exponential, or logarithmic equations or a system of equations. Through the investigation of mathematical models and interpretation/analysis of data from real life situations, students will strengthen conceptual understandings in mathematics and further develop connections between algebra and statistics. 6 Music Number 9222 Name Music Appreciation Music Appreciation is a course which surveys the various components of music including history, theory, and performance. Students will explore the relationship between sound and hearing, purpose and history of written music, and basic musical components such as rhythm, notes, rests, measures, and time signatures. Music of the primitive world is classified by role, instruments, philosophy, and relationship to culture. Students look at music throughout specific periods of history in relation to the cultures and time periods of Greek, Roman, Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic styles. A variety of genres are explored including classical, jazz, opera, blues, gospel, soul, country, bluegrass, rock and roll, and hip-hop. Students are provided a closer look at the history, culture, and important figures related to each genre of music. 7 Science Number 2900 Name Psychology This course is an evaluation of the basic concepts of psychology. During this course, students will learn about psychology from a scientific viewpoint. Studying the grand questions of psychology about the human mind will provide students with a scientific, systematic, and ethical approach psychologists take in their studies for further research. Investigating the brain and the body in relation to their role to the study of psychology through cognition, emotions, memory, sleep, and dreaming will provide the student with a more in-depth understanding of the relationship. The course is designed to provide insight into human development throughout life in physical, mental, social, cognitive, language, life stages, and moral developments. A presentation of social psychology covers the concepts of free will and accountability through discussions of attitudes, conformity, obedience, social relationships, and group conflict and interaction.
