1 KEY STAGE 2 DT OVERVIEW Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils should be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. They should work in a range of relevant contexts, such as the home, school, leisure, culture, enterprise, industry and the wider environment. Design When designing and making, pupils should be taught to: use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design Make select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks, such as cutting, shaping, joining and finishing, accurately select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities Evaluate investigate and analyse a range of existing products evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world Technical knowledge apply their understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures understand and use mechanical systems in their products, such as gears, pulleys, cams, levers and linkages understand and use electrical systems in their products, such as series circuits incorporating switches, bulbs, buzzers and motors apply their understanding of computing to programme, monitor and control their products. Cooking and nutrition - As part of their work with food, pupils should be taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Instilling a love of cooking in pupils will also open a door to one of the great expressions of human creativity. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life. Pupils should be taught to: understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet prepare and cook a variety of predominantly savoury dishes using a range of cooking techniques understand seasonality, and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed.

Moving Toys Design & make an electric fairground ride using gears, cams, pulleys and an electric circuit, including a switch, light and/or buzzer (KNEX Kit) Children could be introduced to computer control in this unit Link with Science re: balanced diet YEAR B ( ) Eurovision Song Contest! Rock and Roll! Controllable Vehicles Design and Make a controllable vehicle (prehistoric Flintstones buggy) Pupils will develop an understanding of how products can be driven by electricity. They will learn how to use motors within their models and how to control the speed and direction of movement. They will develop their designing The Flintstones Forest School Materials Focus: Coil Pot Willow Weaving Dyeing Wool Making Tools Shelters/Den Building The main outcome of this unit will be the design and construction of an iron-age roundhouse/shelter. The Rotten Romans Designing & Making a Roman Helmet Use research, develop design criteria and generate sketches to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing Roman helmet Vive la France! Build the Eiffel Tower Challenge (1 lesson) Pupils develop their understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce complex structures using a range of materials e.g. spaghetti and marshmallow, cardboard, construction straws etc. The Vicious Vikings Textiles/Weaving Abstract collage combining different knotting, plaiting, weaving, threading around or through 2d shapes Small scale weaving project using wool Large scale weaving project using a range of fabrics/materials
3 skills by using their own ideas and experiences to produce clearly labelled drawings. They use construction kits and a range of materials and components to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. The children will produce a framework structure that will be controlled by an electrical circuit. The children will develop this structure with cladding and appropriate finishing techniques to create a quality product. YEAR C ( ) Lookout in the Black out! Make Do And Mend Textile Project Pupils will learn how use turn an old piece of clothing into a new product (purse, wallet or bag), understanding how accessories are designed for different purposes and different users. They will design patterns, and join and reinforce fabrics. Children develop their designing skills when evaluating products and use this information to generate their own ideas and identify design criteria. They communicate ideas through modelling with On Safari! Expedition to Canada! Building an Arctic Shelter The Groovy Greeks 3d Work/Pottery Use research, design criteria and annotated sketches to inform the design of an innovative, functional and aesthetically appealing Greek pot. Magical Mixtures A Taste of India Make an Indian Savoury Dish. Taste a number of Indian food dishes explore ingredients within the context of a balanced diet.

The Fabulous Pharaohs Egyptian Jewellery Drawing Studies Designing own Ancient Egyptian jewellery for a Pharaoh Constructing jewellery using a range of materials e.g. cardboard, pasta, beading, glitter etc. ensuring that the final product is aesthetically appealing. The Terrible Tudors x1 lesson Understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet (link to scurvy and diet on board a Tudor ship) Let there be Light! Computing Link: Control - apply understanding of computing to programme, monitor and control a product e.g. Traffic Lights; Junior Control Insight Mini Light Project Make a Torch (or lighthouse) Children apply knowledge about electric circuits by designing and making a torch/lighthouse with a particular emphasis on defining a set of clear specifications for the torch. Pupils will also consider how the torch/lighthouse can be controlled by designing and making their own switch. Rainforest Adventure Plastic Bottle Bug x1 lesson Select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to make a Rainforest Bug from a plastic bottle using cutting, shaping, joining and finishing techniques, accurately
