Hello, it is a great honor to have been selected to be your child s art teacher this year. Art 1 is a general overview of the basic fundamentals of art. Students will get to work with many different techniques and mediums to grow their artistic skills. Course Description: The discipline-based full year art includes the creation of studio projects in both two and three-dimensional media and the study of Elements and Principles of Art, art history, composition and aesthetics in accordance with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for grades Students will also be expected to maintain an art sketchbook and a portfolio of their work. Both will be sent home at the end of the year. This course is designed to study the visual arts of drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, fibers, photography, and digital media. Participation in regional and local exhibitions is part of the visual experience of the program. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the following Art Shows/Competitions: Katy Spring Art Show PTA reflections art contest The ESC Monthly show Jr. Vase Scholastic Art Event Youth Art Month, at the school level while some will continue on. The Houston Livestock and Rodeo Art Contest

2 Required Photo References: Help your Child to start taking pictures of Texas objects or ranch /rodeo life for the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Art Contest. (Due in October) If possible photos of an animal, insect, reptile/aquatic animal, selfie for portrait drawing and anything else that seems visually interesting. Copyright/Academic Dishonesty Every year the restrictions placed on the use of photograph and copyright martial becomes more stringent and as a result, the way students use these types of materials in the art process becomes more limited. Generally the students work from their own references (i.e., personal photo, sketches, etc.), or photographs that they have received from family or with written permission from the owner. Copying another student s/artist work is considered plagiarism. So if you will please start helping your child start a reference folder of photos he or she have taken of Farm and Ranch, Nature, Odd Things or Interesting Objects. *High School Art 1 - Must have taken art for one year prior (in 6 th or 7 th grade) to be taking this course. Grading Guidelines: Each six weeks grade will be calculated according to the following formula: 6 th, 7th High School Art 1 15% Classroom participation 15% Classroom participation 40% Quiz, daily grade 35% Quiz, daily grades/sketchbook Assignments 45% Major Grades (Projects and Tests) 50% Major Grades (Projects and Tests) If a student has been absent, or gets behind or has not finished an assignment in class they can come during advisory and work or make arrangements to work after school or take it home. Safety: The class room should be a safe environment and every precaution has been taken in order to keep it safe. The art room as opposed to other class rooms in the building contains objects, tools and materials that could be unsafe without the proper use. ***UNSAFE CONDUCT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. ***

Art Fees: High School Art 1: $30.00 Jr. High Art 2, 7 th: gr. $ th grade Art: $24.00 In order to purchase art supplies for your child, it is necessary for us to collect a materials fee for the year. Please make a payment for the amount listed above. Payment options include online though my payments plus in TAC, check or cash. My preferred method is online however if you prefer check please make it payable to West Memorial Junior High and write Materials Fee and your child s name at the bottom of your check.. I also ask that you sign the section below and return it to me with your payment option. Please place in an envelope along with your child s name and the amount. Please arrange payment no later than Friday, September 4, Students are liable for the supplies that they use in class. It is understood that supplies will show signs of wear and tear as the year progresses, but any supplies that are deliberately damaged by a student will need to be replaced.
