1 The Act-Belong-Commit High school self-assessment A great way to live life! actbelongcommit.org.au
2 Act-Belong-Commit Act-Belong-Commit is a community-based health promotion campaign that encourages people to be proactive about their mental health and wellbeing. Just as there are things we can do to keep physically healthy, there are also things we should do to keep mentally healthy. These are summed up in the three words Act, Belong, Commit: Act Keep active in as many ways as you can- physically, socially, mentally, and spiritually. In short Do Something! Belong Keep connected to friends and family; get involved in groups you are a member of; join in local community activities. That is Do Something with Someone! Commit Commit to an interest or a cause; set goals to aim for; become a volunteer; learn a new skill; challenge yourself Do Something Meaningful! This self-assessment questionnaire is a useful tool to help you better understand the Act-Belong-Commit message and for some self-reflection on how you Act-Belong-Commit. There are no right or wrong answers, it s just about things that you do. When you ve finished, have a look at your scores to see where you might like to do more to keep mentally healthy. So over to you! 2

9 Important to consider Your scores tell you how much you Act-Belong-Commit at the moment. We have suggested some score categories to give you a bit of a guide as to whether you should consider doing more in one of these areas. However, there might be good reasons why you score less in some areas (i.e. no opportunities; been sick lately; too busy with homework; have a part-time job, and so on). You might also find that you have relatively low scores but still feel fulfilled and mentally healthy anyway from the things you are doing. It s important to remember it can be detrimental to your mental health and wellbeing if you are over-committing to too many things, so consider your current commitments and level of wellbeing before deciding whether you have the capacity to boost your activity levels. So Let s check those scores! 9
10 What does your Act score mean? A score between 0 10: Look at where your scores are low: Physical? Social? Mental? Spiritual? Where could you most easily boost your activities? A score of 15 or more: Very good! Your activity levels are really good for your mental health and wellbeing. Keep it up and encourage your friends to join you and have a more active lifestyle. A score between 11 14: You are doing well, but you could look at where your activity levels are lowest and think about how you can get more of that sort of activity into your day. What does your Belong score mean? A score 0 12: Look at where your scores are low: pick one or two where you could most easily improve your score and would enjoy doing more of that. A score of 13-15: You are doing well, but you could look at where your activity levels are lowest and think about how you can get more of that sort of activity into your day without overloading yourself. So, if you have the time, you could further boost your mental health by selecting one or two activities you enjoy most and do them more often. A score of 16 or more: You are certainly boosting your mental health and wellbeing through your involvement in clubs and community groups! Perhaps you can encourage your friends who don't do much to become more involved by asking them to join you. What does your Commit score mean? A score 0 7: Look through the questions where you scored lowest. Think about things you could do in those areas that you have time for and would enjoy. A score of 8-12: You are doing well, but you could look at where your scores are lowest and think about where you would like to be doing more. It might be volunteering more often, or taking on a personal challenge. A score of 13+: Congratulations on making commitments to a number of activities. Take time to think about the good you are doing for yourself and the good you are doing for others. And get your friends to join you especially if you think they are being left out. 10
