1 October, 2016 It s in our name... It s what do we do... We collect rocks!!!! The CENTRAL OREGON ROCK COLLECTORS (CORC) is an informal group dedicated to sharing the rock hound hobby. We meet for field trips, collecting rocks, monthly programs, and related activities. You do not have to be a member to attend. However, if you are interested in joining, yearly memberships are only $20 for individuals, or $25 for families. At the end of this newsletter is a form for joining the CORC. The Club meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month, March through October, the November meeting is a potluck holiday get-together on a Sunday. No winter meetings.

2 The Club meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month, March through October, the November meeting is a potluck holiday get-together on a Sunday. No winter meetings. Regular meetings are held at the Redmond Senior Center, 325 NE Dogwood Avenue, Redmond, starting at 7:00 pm until 8:30 or 9:00. August Meeting: 26 people attended our September meeting at the Redmond Senior Center and enjoyed a presentation by Pam Garzini, a local artist who paints scenes on rocks; a question and answer session by the artist; a brief business meeting and our usual door prize drawing. Our next meeting is scheduled for October 16. Field Trips: The Sept CORC excursion to Mc Dermitt, NV was a success, with 18 members participating. Some folks stayed in the area for a full week. Small groups ventured out to explore the many BLM collecting areas, which included LARGE specimens of agate, wood and jasper. Saturday we had a guide through some astounding scenery, wild horses included, as we drove up to the 79 Bed for eggs. 3 Upcoming Field Trips: Oct 9: After a long trip like this one, doing another excursion seems too ambitious! It has been decided to cancel the October trip to Beulah Lake for fossils. As an alternative, the club is being hosted by Desert Dog Mines (Larry Krips) as he liquidates his rocks, including eggs from unusual sites such as Harney Rim and Steens Mt. Alvord View. Prices are listed at $1 to $5 per lb. with half price for 10 lbs or more. Meet at Bronco Court (in the Cimmarron City neighborhood North of the Bend Airport off of McGrath Road) at 10 AM on Sunday, Oct 9. Questions: Elizabeth Prindle at pointingathemoon@bendcable.com. Upcoming Programs: October 16: John and Dorothy Kashuba on the Nature of Meteorites. They were here a few years ago and present an excellent program. John and Dorothy are both very well known in the world of meteorites. John is a top-notch photographer, and Dorothy (Norton) is a published author of meteorite books. Both have published many articles. They are also interested in fossils, crystals, and fluorescent rocks, and Dorothy is a jewelry maker. These are just a few of their interests and talents. You don't want to miss this program! November 20: Annual Holiday dinner/potluck at the Powell Butte Community Center, 8404 SW Reif Road, Powell Butte, Sunday November 20. Bring a side dish or dessert; meat and drinks furnished; also a rock-related unwrapped gift. He is Josh Morris, son of CORC Member David Morris. There will be a show and symposium by the Friends of Mineralogy on October 14-16, 2016, at the Red Lion in Kelso, Washington. The subject is copper and copper minerals. Treasurer Marty Betsch reminds all of us that she is now accepting dues for 2017, $20/single, $25/family. You can pay at any of our meetings up through the April 2017 meeting. I believe Marty also needs an updated address, phone number and street address if there have been any changes. Nominations needed in October for club President and Vice President, elections in either October or November. Please step up and volunteer, or we will have to shang-hai somebody. Also Sue Liebetrau is willing to still participate on the program committee, but really needs someone else to step in and chair. The club has accumulated a fair amount of material assets stored by several different club members. Any suggestion for place to store this in one location would be appreciated.

4 Of Interest: We have many new members this year, including some new to the hobby. I think it is appropriate to reprint the Rockhound Code of Ethics as found on the USDA/FS website. - I will respect both private and public property and will do no rockhounding on privately owned land without the owner's permission. - I will keep informed on all laws, regulations or rules governing collecting on public lands and will observe them. - I will, to the best of my ability, ascertain the boundary lines of property on which I plan to collect. - I will use no firearms or blasting material in rockhounding areas. - I will cause no willful damage to property of any kind -- fences, signs, building, etc - I will leave all gates as found. - I will build fires in designated or safe places only and will be certain they are completely extinguished before leaving the area. - I will discard no burning material -- matches, cigarettes, etc. - I will fill all excavation holes which may be dangerous to people or livestock. - I will not contaminate wells, creeks, or other water supplies. - I will cause no willful damage to collecting material and will take home only what I can reasonably use. - I will support the rockhound project H.E.L.P. (Help Eliminate Litter Please) and will leave all collecting areas devoid of litter regardless of how found. - I will cooperate with field trip leaders and those in designated authority in all collection areas. - I will report to my club or federation officers, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service or other proper authorities, any deposit of petrified wood or other material on public lands which should be protected for the enjoyment of future generations for public educational and scientific purposes. - I will appreciate and protect our heritage of natural resources. - I will observe the "Golden Rule," will use "Good Outdoor Manners" and will at all times conduct myself in a manner which will add to the stature and "public image" of rockhounds everywhere. Also from the Rockhounding on Public Lands Ore/Wash BLM website: Rocks and Minerals: Collecting not more than 250 pounds per year of non-commercial quantities of rock by rockhounds is allowed free of charge on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Commercial collecting for the purpose of sale or barter is not allowed without special authorization. Also, rock cannot be collected on public lands for construction or decorative purposes in landscaping without a permit. Rockhounds may use hand tools such as shovels and picks, but must not use explosives or power equipment for excavation. Petrified Wood: Petrified wood is available for collection on a free use basis in limited quantities as long

5 as the collection is for personal, non-commercial purposes. According to Federal regulations (43 CFR 3622), free use collection weights are limited to 25 pounds plus one piece per day, not to exceed 250 pounds in one calendar year, and no specimen greater than 250 pounds may be collected without a special permit. The petrified wood must be for personal use only, and shall not be sold or bartered to commercial dealers. The club is always looking for members willing to help. Please offer to step in where-ever you can volunteer. September, 2016 Draft Minutes: Executive Meeting: The Vice-President, Al Liebetrau, called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m. In attendance: Marty Betsch, Sue Liebetrau, Suzie Meeker, Elizabeth Prindle, and Jules Wetzel. The Treasurer s report was made by Marty Betsch with approximately $2154 in the bank. Elizabeth Prindle suggested that CORC donate some funds to Petersen s Rock Ranch which recently closed due to the cost of necessary repairs required by their insurance company. Marty offered to research the situation before making a motion to the entire club. Elizabeth noted that 18 club members had signed up to go to the McDermitt field trip the next day. She prepared maps showing where various materials were located in the area. The October Field trip has been changed to a visit to the liquidation sale at the Desert Dog Mine (23005 Bronco Court, Bend) on October 9 at 10 a.m. Sue Liebetrau reported that the program tonight will be Pam Garzini demonstrating rock painting. The October program will be by John and Dorothy Kashuba on the Nature of Meteorites. The November meeting will be the holiday party and potluck at Powell Butte Community Center. Possible dates suggested were Nov. 6, 13 and 20. In order to join the CORC group in Facebook, type in Central Oregon Rock Collectors and ask to join the group. It was suggested to remind the club members to wear their name badges at the meeting. Elections need to be held for President and Vice-President of the club. The position is for a length of two years. Sue Liebetrau mentioned she would prefer to remain on the program committee, but she would like to have a new chair of that committee. The formation of a hospitality committee was discussed. The members of this committee would be there early to set up, provide refreshments, greet members and guests, and direct everyone to sign in. The storage of club supplies was briefly discussed. The problem is that the Redmond Senior Center does not provide any storage space. Currently club supplies are at various members homes. Al mentioned that the last date to see the Redmond Library display is Sept. 30. There is a show in Kelso, Washington, on October for the Friends of Mineralogy and Symposium. The meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m.

The club website is located at and includes past newsletters, information on upcoming field trips and resources. Presentation: The program presenter was introduced by Don Ross. Pam Garzini incorporates art work with specific rock forms. She gets patterns from many sources including the Internet, and she can customize. She sells some of her work at Satterly s Jewelers in Redmond. Pam discussed her techniques, and there were many questions from club members. Her phone number is Sharing: Jack Benedict shared samples of Moroccan agate sold at Richardson s Rock Ranch. Al Liebetrau shared another example of outstanding rock art from an artist from Colorado. Programs The topic of the October meeting is meteorites. Two experts, John and Dorothy Kashuba, will present The Nature of Meteorites. The November program is the Holiday party, which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Powell Butte Community Center. Liquid refreshments and ham and turkey are provided by the club. All members attending are asked to bring a side dish or dessert and a rock-related gift, unwrapped. Field Trips The September trip will be held on Sept at McDermitt OR/NV. Elizabeth Prindle distributed detailed maps of the area. Approximately 18 club members have signed up to explore this mineral-rich area. The October trip will be on October 9 at the Desert Dog Mine, Bronco Court, Bend. Club members will meet at 10 a.m. for their liquidation sale of thundereggs and other materials. Don Ross mentioned that the Polka Dot Mine is still open and has a new vein. There is also Blue Mt. jasper for sale there. Elections The position of President and Vice-President are open, and the term of service is two years. Anyone interested in either of these positions should contact Deb Simon or Al Liebetrau.
