ITk silicon strips detector test beam at DESY Lucrezia Stella Bruni Nikhef Nikhef ATLAS outing 29/05/2015 L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 1 / 11
Qualification task I Participation at the ITk silicon strip test beams at DESY (May 4th-17th) Study atlas mini sensor (ATLAS12A) and front end electronics (ABC130 ASICs) Support in test beam preparation Shifts Data analysis L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 2 / 11
DESY beam line e+/e Converter Fiber γ e+ e Magnet e+ Collimator e DESY II Spill Counter DESY II synchrotron accelerates e + /e A a 7 µm thick carbon fibre produces γ through bremsstrahlung radiation The photons are converted to e + /e pairs with a metal plate (converter). A dipole magnet spreads the beam out as a function of the sign and energy Beam formation with collimator Beam energy within the range 1-6 GeV L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 3 / 11
Why a telescope? It defines the exact track of a particle in a test beam very precisely Reference planes usually in front of and behind the Device Under Test (DUT) Pointing resolution should be better than the expected intrinsic resolution of the DUT DUT results compared to result from telescope L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 4 / 11
The Datura telescope Datura Telescope DUT m L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 5 / 11 Made up of 6 pixel detectors (Mimosa26 sensors) Sensitive area mm 2 Pitch 18.4 µm 4µm intrinsic resolution 2 µm pointing resolution Located in a box Placed in the middle of the telescope Planes 3&4 close to DUT increase resolution
The Datura telescope Trigger Crossed scintillators and PMTs placed in front of the first plane and back to the last one DUT and Telescope info can be analysed together as 1 event in offline analysis L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 6 / 11
Why this test beam? Testing sensors and front end electronics for the new ATLAS silicon strip Inner Detector (ITK) Study ATLAS12A mini sensors Type: n in p Thickness: 310 µm Pitch size: 74.5 µm Strip length: 8 mm Testing the ABC130 readout chip Based on 130-nm CMOS technology Binary chip providing only hit information 256 channels How? Perform threshold scans to calculate the gain of the ABC130 pre-amplifier as a function of bias voltage Analyse the noise occupancy and the efficiency with bias voltage Additional goal is to supply information to simulations L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 7 / 11
Readout electronics for ITk silicon strip detector Readout electronics for ITk silicon strip detector is based on Front end chips: ATLAS Binary Converter based on 130 nm cmos technology (ABC130) Hybrid Controller chips (HCC) End of Stave Controller chips (EOSc) Hybrid is an interconnect circuit that can host up to 10 ABC130s + 1 HCC Module: cm 2 sensor wafer and its front end electronics. One module has one or two hybrids. Stave: double-sided with up to 13 modules and a EOSCs for each side L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 8 / 11
Hybrids tested at DESY Tested two silicon strips barrel hybrids with ABC130 ASICs Two n-in-p sensors for each hybrid (ATLAS12A) 100 channels for each sensor Readout through HSIO (High-Speed I/O) board L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 9 / 11
Testbeam measurements Main goal is to calculate the gain of the ABC130 pre-amplifier. Threshold scans: Bias voltages: 150V, 250V, 350V, 400V Performed scans at 15 different thresholds (from 20 V to 240 V) S-curve: Average number of cluster vs threshold Derivative of the s-curve to obtain the number of electrons whose pulse height is exactly at that threshold value. Same study to be performed also for noise measurements L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 10 / 11
Plans and Conclusions We have events for each run This test beam was successful: we took all the data we wanted! What s next: Analyse the data Deadline for ITk week on September New test beam on October full ABC130 module L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 11 / 11
Back-up Slides L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 1 / 11
The Datura telescope FE-I4 Pixel readout integrated circuit placed in front of the last plane Telescope has a long integration time of µs, while for the FE-I4 25 ns Adding the FE-I4 the time resolution increases by more than 3 orders of magnitude timestamp the individual tracks L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 2 / 11
Data Acquisition: EUDAQ HARDWARE LAYOUT Trigger TLU TELESCOPE DUT FEI4 R E A D R E A D R E A D R E A D O U T O U T O U T O U T Telescope Producer DUT Producer FEI4 Producer TLU Producer DATA FLOW DATA FLOW Data Collector SOFTWARE LAYOUT Run Control L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 3 / 11
Test beam data processing strategy with EUTelescope EUTelescope software provides tools for data reconstruction and analysis and allows a flexible workflow for DUT, FE-I4 and telescope data. Results for each step can be converted in.root files L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 4 / 11
Planes distance and resolution Best resolution with equidistant planes and smallest distance between planes and DUT L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 5 / 11
ITk silicon strip detector overview I The ITK will be entirely a silicon detector. It consists of two main sections. Pixels in red and Strips in blue. There are 4 barrel layers and 6 disks of pixels, 3 barrel layers of short strips, 2 full barrel layers and one stub layer of long strips and 7 disks of strips per end. L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 6 / 11
n in p silicon sensors N-type implants in in p-type float-zone silicon substrate. Radiation hard due to the fact that the bulk is already p-type, so no type inversion occurs. Allowed sensor operation under partial depletion in the case where the increased full depletion voltage exceeds the maximum allowed value of the system. ATLAS12A wafer: includes 24 miniature sensors,10 10mm 2, surrounding the main sensor, which are used to study radiation hardness properties of the different isolation techniques. L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 7 / 11
Desy II Radius of the DESY II ring is m (circumference = m) It accelerates and decelerates one bunch in sinusoidal mode with a frequency of 12.5 Hz (= 50 Hz/4 = 1/80 ms) from 450 MeV up to 7 GeV The revolution frequency is 1 MHz and the bunch length is around 30 ps L. S. Bruni - Nikhef 8 / 11
